Hey everyone I'm gonna try and post a build log on my transforming Qrow sword.
If you're not familiar with show, the character wields a sword that can switch between a couple of modes, such as sword, scythe, compact, and gun.
I decided to keep it a little simple and just go with sword and scythe because I feel I would need to be some kind of wizard to make it go in to compact mode!

Anyway, I made one once before in the span of 3 days as a last minute con rush. It was made from panel wood and insulation foam with a pine pole as its grip and used some aluminum sheet to cover up the working bits.
I don't have many pictures of it when I was building it but I'll try and post what I can.

So the way I went about making the mechanism was that each of the sections of the blade would have a track to run on that it would fall in to place when the grip was slid out. By grip I mean a 6ft pole that kept everything straight through each section of the sword. So that way when I pulled it out and set it in to its new position the blades would go in to the scythe shape. I also wanted to do this and not have tools be required.

When it was done it was about 6 and a half feet tall and weighed 14 pounds. Which may not sound that heavy, but that weight at the end of a 6ft pole makes it feel like it weighs much more than that! Got to see Vic who voices the character at Tampa comic con and he seemed to like it!

So on my next version I wanted to make it lighter and much more accurate scale wise, while also letting it be able to transform. So this was the plan, I got some half inch insulation foam and some foam board and decided that is all I will use. No wood. I also wanted it to be not as wide either.

So first thing I needed to solve was my bad scaling. Due to the image above where it shows the sword in scythe mode and Qrows height never being shown anywhere I basically winged it. On this go around I decided to get creative.

Using this image

I went ahead and measures on my monitor how long the sword and at the same make more of the woman on the right (Winter) height. So with that in mind I manage to find this picture

Now as inappropriate this looks it actually gives me an idea of Winters height. Her younger and shorter sister is listed in the wiki with her height which is on a chart showing every other characters height for comparison. In the above image it looks like winter is about a head taller than her sister and there's another character who has tge same height difference and turns out that height is six feet.
So I'm gonna go with the assumption winter is six feet tall. And using the earlier image of Qrow vs. Winter I used her height I measured on my monitor and divided that in to the 6 feet which gave me a scale to multiply the sword with. Which makes Qrow sword about 5 feet 2 inches. Which is way more manageable. I would later make a stencil using some references in 3ds max and print them out in pep. This is what I have so far.

Here it is before I gave it an edge.

Here it is showing off its transformation ability.

If you have questions or comments feel free to leave them and I'll try and update this as it goes.

Always excited to see fellow RWBY prop builder's build logs =D
What are your plans for the handle? I've seen some people use extending selfie sticks or paint handles and I myself use PVC pipes that gradually get smaller, but you're the first person I've seen that actually put the handle all the way up into the blade. Is this something you intend to do again, or are you going a different route?
