Heyoooooo! Angus here with my first build that consists of a pep to fiberglass to bondo to wiring to paint Grif build from Red Vs Blue Season 9. I hope you all enjoy what I have and will be doing as much as I have or will be having. So please, make yourself welcome in my confusing build thread!
here is a reference picture for those who don't know who Grif is...

First Post!

So i first started on pepping my handplates that Carpativah99 sent me and messed up by printing them on 80 Lb cardstock which worked out but i redid them in 110Lb cardstock
as can be seen here....

I did Fiberglass them and yet unfortunately I seem to have misplaced one this is the last known picture of it...

I acquired the gloves at home depot and am really quite pleased with them. Then came the Chest piece... I think it fits well..
528540_100478000128978_1015674011_n.jpg

along with the torso, the ever-present helmet appears! these both have a shoddy pepping job and will be redone.

Fitting test.

And here is the challenge for you guys. I made the shin and have my doubts about it..... Thoughts?

thus my first post happens! Thanks for reading and putting up with me!

Aaaad now i hate myself. I seem to have now misplaced both my hand pieces and thus will have to make two new ones! good news is that even though the weather is cold, i have a heat box method without using a box! i just used one of those heating fans and put it in my garage with the door closed! works like a charm! even for painting!

Time for a second progress post!
As you can see, this first pep attempt with my forearm turned out to be an extravagant mess. we had to scale down quite a bit.
1005045_175131129330331_859482990_n.jpg

After it was scaled down, I was able to put it with the rest of my finished pep-work. all this pep-work was almost immediately scrapped due to it all being crap. The quality was because I used probably the worst method of pepping and gluing that there is available, hot glue. also, now known as the satan glue. unfortunately, I cannot currently post the detailed pictures of the crap because I cannot find my camera cord. So this will have to do for now.

At this point, I began obsessing even more. To the point that i started drawing this...

379600_175131049330339_588244650_n.jpg

Here is an pic of my original pepped helmet that I re-pepped about three times. As you can see, I had just cause for scrapping this one.

I was very fortunate that Carpathiva99 was kind enough to provide me with these files and I will be forever in his debt. Unfortunately, I had no idea what I was doing. An example of why hot glue is a bad thing. (Don't laugh at my crappy sharpie art.)

994174_175133649330079_1392614365_n.jpg

Did I mention that I made another horrible mistake with this helmet? I was using 80lb cardstock. That is not nearly enough pounds...

Anyway, here is a picture of a newly pepped codpiece that I am still convinced is too small for me.

1013006_175134639329980_2009367566_n.jpg

And last but definitely not least in this post, is how clever I am when I took a picture of me in a doomed practice chestplate. But as it looked like it fit me just fine, I deemed this practice a success!

Anyway, that foes it for me in this post, I shall see you all for my third post!

Third post time! This post is going to be all about fiberglassing and finishing the helmet!
After standard fiberglassing with Bondo brand resin, I set to work padding. a mistake that will be avoided in the future. I have learned to fiberglass, bondo, rondo and then paint is the proper order that is necessary to create a decent helmet. I used EVA foam to put the initial padding in the helmet like so,

The holes for the lights

then, I set to work on the lighting. what I did for the light covers was that I took some Lamenent sheeting and cut it to fit a dome. then, I filled the dome with hot glue and stuck my LED's in the still hot Hot Glue.

This was the tool of choice to use for cutting and sanding fiberglass resin down.

here is a close-up of the light. (would not recommend this method. my ingenuity sucks)

I used the dremel to cut and size the visors that I got off of Amazon also, this is what I had to take off. (I would recommend y part.using goggles for this stage. That was a better idea on my part.)

1017595_177198985790212_763519981_n.jpg

I used Scotch permanent mounting putty and hot glue to mount the visor. I used a hat stretcher to keep it in place.

Here is the helmet with the gold tinted visor placed in front of the rainbowdash visor so that when the visor hits direct and intense light, my ugly face does not show through.

Here is the putty.

And here is the thing that I am most proud of! My wiring job that I did for the lights!

1016499_177199025790208_1715992136_n.jpg

Battery box from Hobby Lobby,
Copper wiring from ACE Hardware and Lights from Amazon.com. The switch I bought was an interrupter switch sold at a local train hobby store.

Here is the helmet with the wiring sticking out of the light holes. (ghetto-tastic!)

Philosophical....

Really, just me making sure it looked right from all angles....

In the chin of my helmet, I installed a computer cooling fan that I bought from Radio Shack. This was originally to help un-fog the visor and keep the helmet cool. It ended up being something that helps me breath....

Continuing my quest in ACE Hardware, I obtained a tube that is used for wire organization and protection. This wire turned out to be perfect for the Mark VI helmet's ventilation tubes on the sides of the helmet. also, did I mention, Chocolate?

I realize that I Bondo'd that incorrectly.... Shut up. I learned my lesson and will do it better next time.

At least I sanded it.....

See?

Sanded.

Then paint. I hate paint. ALOT.
especially when the initial black layer, folds up underneath your gold layer and makes it look like crap..

Trying to get photobucket to work... I do not know what the problem is but just after it loads, everything goes blank...

anyway, after I finished pepping all the models, i managed to get to the fiberglassing stage. This proceeded just about as well as you could imagine someone with little knowledge could go. I am sorry that this post is not going to have many picture. the reason for this is because close to none were taken during this stage. First time I started fiberglassing, I could not figure out what was wrong. After two failed attempts, I turned to the forums for help. it was then that I realized my foolishness. I was trying to fiberglass in December. Near the mountains. Snow. Haha, whoops. With this knowledge, I spent my winter improving my pep files and resizing them so that they fit even better. I am quite happy with the results. During this time, I also finished my Drawing,

Finally, after the weather warmed up, I took my operation out to the backyard. Fortunately, I found a nice big slab of wood in the alley that allowed me to work without spilling the harmful resin unto the grass along with it kept my pieces clean as they dried, like so.

You will notice the black pieces on the sides of the chestpiece. Those are how I mounted and created an opening for it. This will be talked about in my next post. although, I would not recommend this method to anyone.

*edit*
so, this is going to make no chronological sense, but I already had a couple posts reserved for pictures of conventions and so I figured I'd use them. Here are some pictures from Denver Comic Con 2014

THE 405th IS BACK!! And my excitement is through the roof! In the time that the 405th was gone, I finished my suit. well, I say finished when in reality, it needs some tweaking done on it.. like a larger codpiece and knees... But for all intent and purpose, it is finished!!!!!! check back later for technical updates.

haha, thank you! but I did not do it all of the 60 days the 405th was down. but I sure as heck got a lot done!

Awesome job on the suit! Grif is probably my favorite rvb character, it's awesome to see him full sized!

Great job on the suit! It's awesome to see a Grif suit in action!

Thanks!
I think after I have finished all of my posts on this thread, I am going to start another suit. With rondo and just a simply better suit... There are a lot of things that I could have done better and faster with this suit. Any suggestions on what character from RVB?

You should make a suit for Tucker. Or if you want a suit from red team, do Simmons. No one has made a season 9 Simmons suit yet (I think)!

You should be an infantryman. This is too good for you to still be a "noob"

Thanks man, I really appreciate that!

That is an awesome idea! I will probably do Simmons because the voice actor and I share names!
