Quick back story; I found the 405th a few years back when I had the urge to build a Space Marine, but no idea how. I stumbled onto the 405th and all the great Halo costuming going on. From that I was inspired to build an ODST. However I quickly found out that I wasn't a fan of the pep/fiberglass/bondo method. So, things stalled out for a while. I kept doing research and ended up learning the pep to foam method. I used this to build a Space Marine, and got involved over at the Obscurus Crusade. I still have ambitions to improve upon my space marine, but I wanted to change things up a bit and get back to doing an ODST.

I learned a lot doing my SM armour, and I am applying that to this build. The summary of my method includes a fair amount of computer work to prep the models. I take the available files, and do some custom scaling on them before I unfold them. From there I do some post processing to create smoother templates for foam building. Then it is on to printing, cutting out, tracing to foam, cutting that out, and assembling it. Why stop there?! Then I seal the pieces with PVA, and apply a plastic resin coating for a durable finish (nice for painting too!).

So that is the jist of my process. So far I have done most of the computer/prep work, and have started the cut-out and assemble phase. Here are a few early shots:

Looks really nice so far. That work seems to require a lot of patience. I'm not sure I would personally start such an endeavour. Working with foam always looked kind of problematic to me for some reason.

Thanks Gorgutz.

It does require patience, but so do most building methods. I have just found that this works well for me, and I am comfortable with it.

So moving on with the build, I made the flak vest, some straps, and the chest piece. Right now these are all the base models. I will be cleaning them up and detailing them all as the next phase.

Very nice foam work man, not sure if i've seen any foam ODST's in my short time here, either way your's is looking awesome, keep up the good work.

Thanks for the support!

I have made a bit more progress. Some of the time was spent finishing up templates and such, which makes for boring pictures. But I have started building all the bits that go around the waist. I would say I am about half done that group. Hopefully I can finish them up before work (see "stupid real job") gets busy again. Progress (things are just pinned in place):

it looks great and the foam build is impeccable. However I have just one question for this "vest" armor; How do you put it on/take it off? I know that on other armors you can easily hide straps or such and build it in a way so that thats possible, your vest is what appears to be a pull over which is fine, I just see it tearing or similar. Are you going to go back and do that later or what?

Thanks guys!

Abyisz - That is a very good observation. The plan is to make the vest able to crack in half. Right now the neck seal is too tight to cram my head through. So I will go back and split it into two pieces. I will add some webbing and clips to fasten it together, and hide that with the straps and waist armour bits.

from one helljumper to another, this is nice, and abylsz got a point I've got five ODST suit one done the other's need some work, but their all in two parts I use a buckle system on the inside of the pieces to just snap together and tie the two parts sung so it looks like one piece, plus it's quick on off way. now for the waist I seen you mounted the waist plates to your mid section i'd put them on a belt and have straps running up from your thigh plates and connect them to it. but these are just building notes.

Foxleader - All the pieces are just pinned in place for now. I won't be rigging anything in place until later stages of the build.

On that note, I finished up the waist pieces. I pinned everything together (very rough) to get a feel for it. The sale of everything looks to be working out nicely. Next up is the thighs.

This looks extremely nice. Its good to see someone else working on an EVA foam ODST, I wish I had seen yours when I was doing research for my build, lol. Looking forward to seeing this finished, keep the pics coming!

So far man, It's lookin very nice, very crisp and clean. Honestly I have never seen a full foam ODST build before, I also have been away from the forums for a good year or so...

I like the way this build is going!

Keep it up!

Thanks everyone! Work (stupid real job) has been crazy busy of late so unfortunately progress has been slow. Hopefully I can get back into it next week.

Thanks for the feedback. Small update here. I finally had some free time again and got one of the thigh pieces put together. it still needs some detail pieces and the inner banding. I am still thinking of interesting ways to do the banding, so it might be blank for a while.

Some more progress on the build. I have the shins almost done, though I ran out of foam to do the knee piece. So I will get to it again, once I re-stock. Need to do a little shaping and cleanup work too.
