ODST build in the UK

Hello everyone!

I've long wanted to do something from Halo and really fancied an ODST - then quite by chance a garrison mate was selling an unused Sean Bradley lid and gun set and I jumped on it (kinda) as a chance not to be missed.

Right now it's kind of a buy then research thing as I'm tied up in other armour projects at the moment, but I plan on building the rest from pep and fibreglass - or maybe foam, I don't know. I have never worked with foam. I'm hoping the pep files are out there to find.

I'm thinking a military green colour scheme and I think I need a new visor as I'm not really happy with this colour. I guess I will have to contact Sean about this.

Well, not much more to say right now, just wanted to jump in and wave. No real idea what all the bits for the gun are, got a bag of resin greeblies but now I'll set about finding out and doing the research I should've done a week ago

I'm always glad to see UK projects. It's a nice reminder that I'm not the only one in the country doing this haha.
This looks like a great set, I'm extremely jealous of that SMG. I like the visor but hey I guess it's a preference thing haha.

If you end up trying to work with foam, PM me, I'm also researching and in planning stages of my first ever foam build, and you know what they say, the more the merrier!

out of interest, does anyone have any idea how to assemble the gun? I ask because I seem to have too many bits! A part of me think it may actually be buildable in two different configurations (silencer + outercasing vs non silenced with internals), but I'm not entirely sure

Thanks. I think I've got nearly the full set of pep files now, but it's hard without a checklist! Am slowly ticking them off against reference pics

For ODST? Yeah no kidding, that suit has a bunch of little parts such as pouches, pockets and straps. I started an ODST pep build a long time ago, and gave up after finishing most of the torso pieces. Not for any particular reason, I think I was busy at school or had insufficient funds. But I remember having a folder full of individual pep files. Which ODST version are you going to use? I remember there are some variations, such as the chest being in 3 seperate pieces in the WETA film, or 1 solid piece from Halo:3 ODST.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I have a bunch of ref pics and in nearly all of them it looks liek a flexible vest with armour plates over the top:

You can clearly see the straps and underarmour on top of which we have chest / ab / lower ab and then finally cod. I think this photo is perhaps my point of reference from which I'll design my suit.

Looks like you're going with the WETA design then. Which is probably best considering it was designed with live action filming in mind.
The differences between the two are barely noticable, I whipped up a quick comparison in MSPaint to show the main difference for you.

So the main difference (besides the shoulder pieces) is the seperation of the main chest piece, the WETA suit has 3 parts to the chest plate while the H3: ODST chest plate is one solid piece.

As for the vest under the armor pieces, it usually consists of a solid armour plate for the back (sometimes build in sections for flexibility), leading up to the ODST collar, and then stopping there, the front of the vest is usually empty or soft material leaving space for the individual armor pieces to attatch to the collar/shoulder-straps, there was a pep file for the vest somewhere, have you got that one? If not I can have a look around for it.

EDIT: This is the back/collar piece I was referring to. As you can see there isn't really a 'front'. Only a back, and a collar. How you choose to make this is up to you, but the straps (going over the shoulders and around the hips) seem to play a big part in holding the front pieces together.

Ah cool, thanks for that. I have all the pep files from the database but none of the chests are in three sections (although some are built to look like it):

Also obviously have peps for the shoulders and back torso. Id' say that all the shoulders I have resemble the WETA build, none have the deep point downwards.

Do you have any refs of the chest where you can actually see the three plate assembly, or is it implied? To me the design looks like a lower, wide plate, with a bolted on mid section, such as:

it seems to me that implication is that the straps coming over the shoulders run in a V shape to the cod, where they end in DRings, with the other plates being attached to them.

Yeah it would seem that some of the files you are using are based on Halo 3 / ODST models, and not the WETA designs. However I'm not 100% sure.
After having a scan through the Pep file database I had no luck locating the WETA files, I'll keep my eyes peeled for them though, I found some reference pics that might help you out a little. Unfortunately I couldn't quite find a picture showing the assembly I'm afraid, you may be right that all 3 pieces appear separate but are actually attached by a solid plate beneath.

I also put together yet another Microsoft Paint diagram to show you how I would personally deal with ODST strapping.
Green: Armor Pieces
Red: Main Shoulder Straps
Blue: Minor straps

the build is nice and the parts are easy to pep without any complicated spots and especially they are easy to mount.

For the basic armor plate strapping: just use screws and mount them directly on the plate.
the sidepad with magnets or something similar.

the sidepad helps to cover the strapping for the back and front piece of the chest. use these parts for the closing:

with these you can forget the strapping over the shoulder (which i used on the picture - these strapping method is disturbing)

hope your build will come up great

Ah nice, thanks for that. I reckon in all honesty it wont be much of a problem to use the closest "single piece" chest and divide it up - it's going to need something below it just to keep it in check I reckon.

Something I'm slightly confused about, perhaps you guys have some ideas, is the forearms. I've build (ready to resin) one of Hugh's pep files but the thing is, I can't find a single picture that looks like this model, especially the front and raised top section. Most photos I've seen resemble the "crackhead09" files. However, what really stands out is that neither pep file has the raised section in the same place as the photo! As you can see here, in the photo, the raised bit is on the outside, same as the elbow cover. Both pep files position it on the top, 45 degrees from the elbow.

It's more than possible I'm getting confused between ODST types but, from the live action shot I posted on Page1, all of Hughs pep files look spot on - except the forearms.

Any thoughts? thanks!
