After several pepakura attempts, I've decided I would start somewhere less sacred than the MJOLNIR Mk. VI. So with the coming of Fallout 4 and the ridiculous selling out of the legendary edition, I have decided to make my own Pipboy 3000! (Hopefully a mod can move my thread to the appropriate category, being Non-Halo.) Thanks PlayByMyOwnRule for the file!!

altered file to height 190mm to better fit my phone and arm

Krylon MAXX Gray Primer
Krylon MAXX Italian Olive Satin Spray Paint

Now, I've come to a point that I haven't in my other pep attempts. No More Tabs!?! All of these pieces (pictured) are complete. My thought currently is to use scotch tape for temporary placement and then spot blobs of hot glue to secure. What do you guys do to attach pieces like this?

Photo Update!

I finally got it pieced together. I'll give it the first coats of resin tonight and have at it tomorrow!

I'm still curious how others would have tackled attaching pep pieces together without tabs. I ended up putting small dabs of hot glue to hold it steady and then dripping in blobs to specific spots one at a time and letting them dry between. Took quite awhile and at the end I was getting awfully close to my fingers. :eek

I have to say without tabs you did a pretty good job. I'm wondering how this is going to hold together after resin. Post more pics of the build as it come along. Keep peppin and grinnin!

Looks excellent! Very well done.
I ought to make a pipboy at some point myself. I'll wait and see how yours turns out first. (;

As for your question. For that, I would have glued any bits that make contact with where it should connect, and taking my time ensuring everything is stuck. I'd have left them separate and tried to work on each bit individually, though. Problems can arise from doing it that way but I prefer the convenience.

mandoman247 - Thanks! It should hold together just fine... It's still just glue and paper. lol I'll be sure to post more pics soon. I like documentation, as you can see from my materials list in the beginning. Plus it helps the next person know what they are getting into.

Raquisite Kind words, thank you. I'm thinking I made it a tad too big. I was more concerned about getting my phone in than my arm. Oops. Just means it will take up my whole arm. A little cumbersome, but I should be able to still game with it.
I'm not sure I follow the technique you were describing. Otherwise it sounds like what I did!

See my first photo to see the sections, then I glue them together slowing and individually. My question is what kind of gluing technique would you have use (ie. what glue, how would you apply it). I've made my own patch tabs before, but I thought that this would take to long with how many sections there were.

Yeah, I struggled on the wording when I was initially writing the post. I would have done it how you did it, otherwise would've made my own tabs, as you said.
It'll gain strength when you resin it, also. Are you going to be bondoing this? I haven't really seen any pipboy builds (I'm sure they're out there) so I'm interested in how it'll turn out, and what techniques you'll use.

Update: Fully resined, just waiting for it to dry before glassing. The rain and cold are proving to be a hindrance to the drying process. But I went out and purchased an infrared space heater!

Figured it would be less likely to combust the resin fumes and I have been wanting to get one for the house too.

Yes I do plan on using bondo. It will be my first bondo attempt though so fingers crossed. All I know is: thin coats, lots of sanding. I'll check out a few more tutorials right before though.
One note I'll add is that I did leave off the peps of a few knobs. Not only are knobs a pain to glue together, but I was hoping for something a little more functional. So I will be installing random electronic knobs that I can find to complete the piece.

Sounds great! Adding your own knobs and small parts will make your life easier as I'm sure you're aware. You'll also have the added bonus of having them be functional, as you said.
Some advice from me would be: When using bondo, definitely make small batches of the stuff. When I first bondo'd a helmet I had created I wasted a lot of bondo for no reason other than impatience. So keep the batches small and take your time.
Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Photo Update (and 50th post! Woot!)

It has been fully resined. One coat on the outside, one coat on the inside then fiberglass.

Thanks to Ral Partha for the great tip on using spray adhesive to secure the fiberglass cloth! Worked like a charm. :thumbsup

Here it is fully glassed and cleaned up. I used the Dremel on the inside to knock the points off the fiberglass edges to make it less of a death trap to put your arm inside of. Lol.

Currently waiting a few ticks as my first coat of Bondo dries and then I'll be at sanding and another coat of bondo before bed. Fallout releases tomorrow!!! I'm hoping to have it painted before the end of the tomorrow, but my copy of the game hasn't arrived yet so we'll see how much time I have.

Haha this is great, I'm building one too! I'm running into the same problems, have it all together and have to attach the no tabs part. This is one heck of a build, getting real sick of these thin tiny pieces!

Thanks guys for the encouragement! It has started to slow down a little, but I am still motivated to get this done and done well.

Photo Update:

First coat of bondo, sanded down some, ready for second coat. I probably didn't need to put so much on since my pep work had so much detail, but I am really pleased with how much structural integrity the bondo added.

Second coat of bondo not sanded. Probably all the coats I've got the patience to do. Still sanding. :facepalm

I've been sanding this down during my breaks and lunches at work, but last night I wanted to take a break from it and I decided to start working on the phone shelf. I've cut the back off where I wanted it.

However, I forgot to check to see if that was going to be big enough to slide my phone in. It wasn't.

I had to make extra cuts to widen the opening. I was able to keep the cuts on natural seems though so it should be to hard to piece back together.

I decided to use thicker paper for the shelf, to help me position it better and since it didn't need to be folded. This is from a manila folder. And I did put my phone in to make sure it fit before gluing.

To secure it for resining I used the same method I used to attached the Pipboy pieces... Giant globs of hot glue!

Now it has been resined both sides with one coat. Once it is dry I will fiberglass the bottom and get back to sanding. I'm thinking I will be adding a little bit more bondo to select spots to plug tiny holes and shape as long as I have to mix some up to fix that back cover plate that I cut out.
Burt - Get some pictures up! I'd love to see your progress and would definitely be willing to help if you had any questions about how I did something.

I finally got this sucker together. I didn't like this file at all and wish someone had connected the different parts together. I really really like your idea for a phone shelf and I think I'll do that with mine as well!

Here's mine so far. I think it's a bit sloppy but I plan to harden it, then use sculpey to make better details and fill whatever is needed. I'm going to use this piece to teach myself how to do molds and casts later in the month.

I'm hoping someone out there makes a file of the new pip boy. I like the newer one a bit better, but it looks even more complicated than this one.

For the knobs and buttons I'm not sure if I'm going to go to lowes/RadioShack and buy some fitting ones, or maybe just create some out of sculpey.

Again, loving your build. That phone shelf is top notch. Can't wait to see what you do with this!!

Burt - Nice pep work! Really. It looks like you've done it to scale and I don't think I could have handled some of those parts any smaller. :/ Yours looks great though. I've never worked with sculpey so I'm curious to see what that looks like. I will agree that the new Pipboy does look better. I'm guessing they redesigned it to hold a phone better (legendary edition Fallout 4) because my pep couldn't have been any smaller and still held my phone, which is also on the smaller side. Oh well. I'm making it work even if it does take up my whole forearm. Spoiler: I love when they showed the Pipboy 1 in the opening scene.

Photo Update:

I was able to fiberglass the phone shelf with ease. (I cut out a bigger hole than I needed to, but I did this to keeps the cuts on natural seems and give me more space when working inside.)

Here I've finished up with the 80 grit sand and working on the 120, almost ready for the 320.

I get so tired of sanding. :/ Back to working on the phone shelf. I had a Styrofoam block lying around and decided to make a "tray" to help hold my phone in place and also easier to get in and out. With that I cut a finger pull tab out of the shelf.

You can see that I've sanded down the styrofoam to mold to my phone. I knew it would get thin so I superglued the rest of that manila folder to the bottom.

Slides in like a charm!

Getting so close on this guy. I've done the 320 grit sanding and it's so smooth. What I've got left: Cool knobs, maybe a compass (instead of a rad counter), attach and finish the back piece (probably with a cabinet hinge) and make it come to life with a little paint!

Yeah, a lot of Styrofoams and insulation foams will be dissolved by the solvents in most Spray Paints. If you seal the Styrofoam with something like Mod Podge, a latex based paint, or Plasti-Dip first, the spray paint will not eat away at the Styrofoam.
