Assassin's Creed: Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad

I'm pretty much finished with my Altair build, and figured I would cross post it here from my thread on the TheRPF, since my build thread on the RPF has like zero views and zero comments, I figure with the more Video Game Centric feel of the 405th, you guys might appreciate this build more than the average RPF user.

I like to take a “realistic” approach to costumes. (For example, my Link, from Legend of Zelda, use suede for the Tunic and all hand tooled and dyed leather for the belts and gear.) For Altair, I did a lot of research on what fabrics would have actually been like in the Holy Land in this time period, and decided on Linen for all of the soft goods. I figure, if it's good enough for the SCA, it's good enough for me. I am using 6 oz leather for all of the leather on the costume, aside from the two blue pouches, which I made out of some scrap suede I had around.

I patterned out and began primary construction in October of 2013.

I did sort of cheat on the gloves. I got some leather gardening gloves and cut the fingers off:

Here is the pattern I made for the blue pouch, as well as one finished pouch and one in progress:

Finished right glove and the armor panels for the left vambrace. The pattern for the armor panels was drawn onto styrene plastic and then dremeled out by hand:

Inner tunic and pants out of Linen. The bottom edge of the inner tunic as boning in the bottom of the “flaps” to help them keep their shape, as well as weights in the bottom corners to help the “flaps” hang down properly.

Throughout October 2013 I continued to work on the leather goods mostly.
Had a bit of inspiration randomly for the two belts tubes for Altair while walking around Hobby Lobby. I ended up making them out of M&M Candy tubes and wooden dowel caps:

I did the boots similar to the officially licensed boots, a sort of Gator on top and the bottom will be modified shoes (Those aren't the shoes I use):

Very nice. I have thought of doing Altiare but I am collecting the materials and other things for doing a Ezio build. I love the CREED. Might do an Edward Kenway the pirate also.
The vambrace looks really good. Look forward to seeing more.

"Belt loops" were added to all the gear for the back of the Abdominal armor. The two blue pouches are connected to the same belt loop so they can stay lined up. I put everything on belt loops, rather than permanently attaching to the armor so they I can have some adjustment in the belt.

The chest triangle was carved out like the vambrace, painted, and rings were attached.

I decided to attach the upper "flaps" to the red sash, so that they would always be in position:

The hidden blade is Gravity fed and deploys:

he Hidden Blade was collaborative effort between myself and my cousin. I made the leather parts and the “armor panels” on top of the gauntlet, but the actually impressive part, the blade and release mechanism itself was done by my cousin.
It breaks down basically into a plastic box that houses the blade and the catch, covered in metal, with metal eyelets, and a cast resin blade. The catch release is attached to a ring that fits over my finger. I pull back on the string, pops the catch, and the blade slides out. The blade as it extends out of the case is two parts, you can see it okay in the second gif where the first part comes out, and the end of the blade comes out of the first part…if that makes sense. I can take some more pictures if you want more clarity.

And, it is Gravity Feed, which does have the unfortunate side effect that the blade will not deploy past 90 Degrees, and it does collapse back in on itself when you lift it up. But, for having it pop out when it’s facing down, it looks cool.

Love everything so far. The hidden blade is cool. having it slide out when the arm is down on the gravity slide is genius. when you lift the arm up past 90 degrees and it slides back in does the mechanism lock it back in place if your hand is back in normal position or do you need to lock the mechanism manually with the other hand. I have been working on the 2 hidden blades for Ezio's costume. I am doing all the armor out of leather also.

It slides back in and locks back into place automatically when I raise my arm over 90 degrees.

The costume is pretty much done at this point, just needs the embroidery details a round the arm holes in the outer tunic. I had the opportunity to get some good shots with Bryan Humphrey at Dragon Con.

Only thing that kinda throws it off for me is that your hidden blade looks really bulky, if you have access to a 3d printer try snagging a hidden blade file off maybe thingiverse, or on shapeways Ammnra has a few really nice hidden blade kits that are con safe and look pretty nice = Linky = just shooting ya an idea but again your costume is awesome

It doesn't look like "Ammnra" makes Altair's Hidden Blade, so I think for know I will stick with my "bulky" blade, since I helped make it and take a sense of pride in that.

The Assassin toy prop kit that Ammnra makes is the hidden blade. Even though it is plastic and con safe due to weapons laws passed in 2011 here in Washington State I have seen these peace bonded or asked to remove before entering the CON area.
