Hello everyone!
After a year of inactivity I decided to return to the work bench and continue the ODST suit I started last summer, using the classic pep-and-resin combination. It looked like this (ft. lame paint job) :
As we all know, the classic pep is often a messy, smelly, costly, tenuous and longish process. So when I came across all those awesome suits made of foam that keep popping up, I thought I'd try to complete my ODST using foam.
As of now, I have the chest core, thighs, shoulders, butt packs and main chest piece done. It looks like this (sorry for the verrrrrrry crappy quality) :
As you can see, I went for an N7 look with the red-on-white stripe. However, you'll notice that the shoulders are just plain black; that is because I used black foam to make them. "Oh, just spray some plastidip on 'em and paint!" I heard you say.
Well, that's kind of the problem here. Plasti dip is not sold anywhere in my province, and the shipping fees from the states are ridiculous. So basically, until I can get my hand on some, I just use white foam mats and paint straight over it. The results, as you can see in the next picture, are far from ideal.
The lack of foam sealing also contributes to the nasty looking thighs, amongst other things :
I'm also having the hardest of times making a decent-looking gauntlet; I'll have to look into that later on.
For now, I'm doing another pair of shoulders in white foam that I'll pattern with the N7 stripe while I wait for my D-rings and webbing to get here. I'll buy more paint soon to touch up the tighs (which are very unequally painted) and entirely repaint the pep pieces (see picture #1).
I have not yet decided wheter I'll put on my foam chest plate or a repainted version of my pep one.
Oh, and my shoulders are a hybrid of the classic hinged version by Kirrou and a bit of free-handing by yours truly (note that my cam's flash make them look grey, they are actually black):
Steps to come include making shins, finding a way to make decent looking gauntlets, adding the neck seal to the chest core, strapping and/or glueing the chest plates to the chest core, and my little personnal touch : making a kama for the suit. Yep, a star wars clone trooper kama, probably red in color with black lining :
So yeah. The "twist" in the title? An N7 patterned ODST with a star wars belt-spat. 'Cause hipster ODST dislikes mainstream ODSTs. :cool
By the way, comments are more than appreciated - especially if you got any ideas for my foam sealing problem (with or without an alternative for plastidip)!
