Hello Forum-goers!
I am excited to say I am getting off my lazy butt after a couple years oogling the amazingness on this site to finally build my own halo related armor. It will be for my little brother at first and if time permits I will build a Spartan suit for myself for Halo 4. My Bro is going to be an Elite so theres a challange!

First off with this build I will be using a little action figure for reference and other than the few pep files I have found I will be scratch building it from foam and cardboard.

Progress on the first post is as follows:
Pep files for head have been cut out. gluing will commence by the weekend.

As I'm sure everyone knows, Elites have digitigrade legs, thus requiring either a very clever illusion in costuming, or stilts. I chose stilts. I have made them and they work so far. I still need to add the padding for the knee and foot but so far my brother has no complaints in walking in them.

sorry if it's huge...I have yet to figure out how to fix it...probably something simple haha

Here is a video of the stilts in action. With a little practice I think my bro can be the perfect Elite!

Thanks for reading and I will update on my progress weekly

Good luck man this is going to be a trick! Your stilts look really interesting and I like em'. Hope to see this turn out, not too many elites out there.

Thanks! Was actually my brothers idea for the Elite. He said just about the same thing and he loves to be different. Glad I can fuel his obsession as well as my creativity. The trick is going to be patience and time. I'm confident I'll make a decent looking costume, but the whole time consuming process may be my undoing haha.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. I've been drawing up plans for an elite costume that uses stilts, but I have a number of other projects to finish before I start working on it. Best of luck!

thanks! have fun getting caught up! I know what thats like having way to much to do haha. Hopefully you have the luxury of time!

Have you decided which elite you're going to do or are you going with the Arbiter?
Stilsts look awesome by the way...

Yes I have decided actually! I am using my little figure for referencing and will go for the same look. http://http://www.amazon.com/McFarlane-Halo-2009-Elite-Combat/dp/B001DYWOE2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1335546134&sr=8-5 hopefully that link works if not ill put a picture up

I will not be using the tan color. My brother will decide what he wants it to be painted like.

PROGRESS UPDATE:
I have completed about 15% of the pep for the head. I have a 13 hour shift tonight so I will work on it some more when i get back at 2am -_-* I'll have pictures tomorrow. I also went out this morning and bought some eva foam and nu foam for the legs and I will put together the legs asap. thanks for reading!

Another Idea has popped into my head! I think it has been done before but I will keep a running tab on any and all expenses and post it as it comes up and have a grand total at the end.
So far:
Stilts: 3, 1X6X24 pine boards $15
pair of old skate FREE
2, 14in drawer slides $20
MISC hardware $10
4, Rubber Bungee Cords $12
Approx. Total of stilts w/o padding=$57

I'm going to keep tabs on this too. You off to a great start with the legs. I think your bro might have to do lots of squats to make sure his legs can handle walking in that costume for hours on end. o.o;;

GOOD LUCK! 8D

Thanks! And the idea behind having the bungee cords is too take most of the weight off his upper legs. Acts as a second set of tendons if you will. He has leaned forward to where his upper body is parallel with the ground and all that is supporting him is the cords and the stilts. was quite funny when our mother walked in and started spazzing. thanks again!

This has the potential to be one of the most epic things ever.

Subscribe. CHECK!

Thanks! I followed your build a while ago, very well done! I hope to achieve the same level of awesome but I doubt I could turn out something as great.

Don't sell yourself short there ninja. You've already tackled one of the hardest parts. One of the reason most people don't try an elite is because of the legs and you've already done that! Keep up the great work! :D

I appriciate that. The other thing that is going to be a challange is the head. I'm not sure whether to make it so my brother can see through the eyes of it or to make an port hole in the chest somewhere and leave the head floppy haha. Still there is always going to be that little mind in the back of my head saying why the hell are you doing this. I usually tell it to go away and let me work in peace haha. I have more pictures to update with but for some reason my camera is being a piece of crap. Give me a couple minutes and I'll have them up hopefully. Thanks again!

Hello! Happy Monday! This past weekend I had a total of 38hrs of work over 3 days so I was kind of tired. So I'm sorry if I haven't gotten enough done for some of you speed freaks haha.

I have completed the pep version of the head for the Elite at 30% downscaled and will begin the helmet sometime tomorrow.

I did venture to the local walmart and picked up some foam. Figuring out where to begin on the leg cover for the stilts was difficult. I stared at my little 6" Elite figure for about an hour this morning before deciding on I better just work from the bottom up. So I started with the toe, then the foot, I ran out of some stuff so I am going to take a lunch break and go to walmart again then I will work on the leg. Then repeat the process for the other stilt. Here is what I have so far on the left foot (don't think it matters which on considering they are symetrical beings like ourselves haha)

This is NU Foam commonly used for seat cushions...It is open celled I believe and I used it for the inside of the foot because I am anticipating falls and if i used all EVA foam it would be unforgiving if it bent out of place. And NU foam makes good padding

NU foam was cut into shape and I layed two on top (1" thickness originally) My box cutter worked alright for getting the basic shape but I had to torch it (yes I had proper ventalation, a respirator, fan on, and garage door open) into the defined shape. Not that it mattered much because I ended up putting a layer of EVA foam over it to get more detail on the foot.

How the foam would sit beside the wood. Being the toe I also figured going with the NU foam would make the movement look more realistic than a person on stilts.

Good Ol' EVA foam cut and glued into a shape of a foot. The back portion actualy slides over the wooden part of my stilt so it doesnt look like an elongated miss-proportioned foot. yay for planning!

My faithful assistant :D

Thanks for reading! and I'll post more updates on Thursday unless I get tied up in college work.

I went to Walmart earlier and found the Flex Seal stuff. I tried it out on the foot and I like the way it filled in all the holes. The foot now looks like one solid piece and the texture of it is a bonus. Of course I'll have to sand it and paint it to look right but I found a way to cover any mistakes I may make with the foam hehe.

Oh progress update:
I made a shin piece for the stilt. I will need to find something like a tube to cover the wooden part of the stilt so I can hide all the hardware on it. Any ideas on what I could use? The wood board I used is a 1"X4"

I still have to sand and detail it but I have the basic form of it. Thanks for reading! Keep checking back I'll have updates whenever I can.

i gotta say, DAAAAAMMMMMMMNNNN!!!!!! looks awesome so far dude! love the stilts! and great job on the foot and armor so far! to cover the hardware, i dont know, i would suggest just trying different things and seeing what works best.

I work at asign shop and we have material that comes on thick, sturdy, cardboard tubes. They're about 3" in diameter, easy to cut, and very light.
Thats what I would probably reccomend.
I'm sure if you were willing to do a little running around, any sign shop within your vicinity you would be willing to let them go without much of a fight...
