Hey Everyone! So I started this a little while back but I didn't want to post anything because of the forum update and disupdate. So I had some time to kill and wanted a little feed back from you guys on how to proceed from where I am. Im using the halo reach DMR sliced file from the 4shared folder. im looking into making the barrel out of PVC piping and materials (which is why its missing). I built the gun out of cardboard and chipboard that I had laying around because I like to work with materials that I have and then advance myself on to foam later. I'm trying to figure out how to make everything smooth. I thought bondo of course but I wanted to know if there were any other ways of smoothing out the corrigations on the sides. Below is a picture of my progress, I know its not a very good photo but I will be posting more soon.

thanks for looking!

Rsmith,
That's a great start. I did a whole suit in cardboard. The trick with filling and smoothing cardboard is that most fillers are too hard. The cardboard will want to disintegrate before the Bondo even begins to reshape. You need to use softer materials as well as harden the cardboard. I seal my cardboard with Mop-N-Glo or Future floor wax. It's basically an acrylic clear coat. Don't go overboard or the cardboard will delaminate. Sealing will help prevent the filler from distorting your base model. For filler, spackle and/or paper mache' work. You may want to mix your own proprietary ratio to get something that works well for you. Personally, I'd start with lightweight spackle. Even dry, it is fairly soft. After shaping, seal it also with floor wax to harden.

One final trick is in the painting is to carefully avoid dragging your detail brush over the corrugations. Doing so only highlights any areas you didn't level properly. Look at the other cardboard weapons. You'll know what I'm talking about when you see it. Good weathering tricks the eye into passing over flaws. Bad detailing makes flaws scream for attention. Good luck!
