Alright, finished the EOD helmet! Took about a 2 months to do, but I was working on and off, so it doesn't really count. Goes into the 4H Modeling competition for Johnson County, IN tomorrow.
I elected to paint the helmet in my personal paint scheme, Steel and Green. I distressed the crap out of it, and I feel it came out pretty good. The silver you see was painted on first, where I wanted the silver to be showing through. Once the silver dried sufficiently, I covered the spots with mustard, a technique I learned from a TK forum. Once all spots were covered, I hit the helmet with color, starting with the filter components at the front of the mask (white parts). Once those were painted, they were masked, and then the whole helmet was hit with a gloss dark grey, from Rustoleum. Masked that, hit it with gloss black, also Rustoleum. Masked it, and hit it with the final green coat. Once all that was done, masking was removed, mustard was chipped off and cleaned, silver was repainted where needed, and I did a flat black overcoat with an airbrush, throwing in shadows, scorch marks, and dirt everywhere that was needed.
The eyes are both vacuum formed, and painted according to Redshirt's Airbrushed Visor Tutorial, which works phenomenally well. My eyes aren't particularly great, and visibility is essentially limited to "Obstacle Avoidance" but hey, it worked, and they look alright. It's definitely a technique that I will have to keep practicing and working out kinks. Definitely a good idea for odd visors, like the CQB, EOD, EVA, and Security.
