Hey everyone!
Wow, it’s been ages since I shared a build thread—last time was my original ODST! Time really flies when you’re having fun, and honestly, I’ve been meaning to take a moment to share what I'm up to. It’s so easy to just keep everything in my head, but I know it’s a bit of a missed opportunity for the awesome community I love. Plus, it’s a great reminder that it truly takes a village to bring these projects to life!
So, welcome to my latest adventure!
I’m excited to use this thread to document my journey with this new suit, while also drawing from what I learned during my previous builds—both for myself and through my work with Spacestation Gaming!
While I probably won’t dedicate threads to my past projects, I hope this one becomes a cozy corner for all the insights from those experiences, as well as a source of inspiration for design choices.
Now, let’s dive into the fun part: the concept phase! This is where I get to figure out what direction I want to take. As the title suggests, I’ll be working on a Mark VII build, but that opens up a world of possibilities:
- Will it be a “static” build or more modular?
- What materials will I use? Foam, 3D prints, resin, maybe even silly string? Anything goes!
- What are my build goals? Should I focus on movement and dynamics, screen accuracy, or modularity?
I’ve decided to take a “hybrid” approach for most of my recent suits, selecting the material that best meets the mobility and durability needs for each part. So here's the general idea I have in mind:
All base Mark VII 3D Print files are from TurboCharizard 's excellent set of 3D print files for his suit. He is also designing the new pieces to function with his modular design philosophy!
Helmet: Resin-Cast via Branfuhr + 3D Print for Achille's
Neck seal: Rubber Cast via JTF4 OR Foaming using an unfold provided by MNKr
Chest: Foam
Ab Wrap: Foam, following MNKr V1 segmented style to leverage color options
Bicep/Shoulder: 3D Print ( JTF4, Thank you!, as well as SeaSickle for printing my base variant shoulders!)
Vambraces: 3D Print (Fallen, thank you!)
Gloves: 3D Print (TPU, Thanks Bert!)
Cod: 3D Print, segmented for maximum mobility ( JTF4, Thank you)
Thighs: Foam
Knees: Foam
Shins: Foam
Boots: 3D Print (BrokenHawk thank you for printing these!)
Alright, now that we've covered the basics, let's dive into the fun part: what's the suit all about? I've got a two-part plan in mind! First off, I want this suit to be super modular, giving me endless opportunities to get creative with the armor. I'll be able to upgrade and swap parts whenever inspiration strikes.
To make it sturdy, I’ll be reinforcing the armor with fiberglass resin on the 3D prints and giving it a nice XTC-3D top coat. And for the foam parts, well, let’s just say they’ll be “shoe goo’d” to ensure they can withstand anything. So, not only will I have a solid "base" Mark VII version for when I want to keep it simple, but I’ll also have a "supped" up edition loaded with exciting variations and eye-catching details!
With that in mind, here’s the current game plan for the suit:
There are some parts in here for this suit I am currently getting modeled, and some I am going to take into a full freehand direction. I am really excited to kick off this build. I already have some folks in the community working on 3D printing some of the parts on my list above. So expect another update here soon!
