Paint used for "Blackwashing"?

Hey guys! I remember seeing an armor painting tutorial a while back in which black paint was sprayed into the indents on armor pieces and then wiped off to make them stand out more. I forgot whether or not you're supposed to use normal black paint (like a satin finish) or black primer (or if it even makes a difference) If anyone knows, that would be awesome! Thanks!

Oh and PS, I'm not even sure if "Blackwash" Is even the correct term, It just seemed to fit the best haha.

I use flat black for blackwashing. Acrylique paint is good for this, I use a thin brush with long bristles to absorb the paint and then poke the tip into the definition line and hold the part so the paint can run down the trench. Any mistakes or runoff is easy clean-up, keep a rag or other swab handy. I craft armor with foam and the foam will suck the paint from the brush. Reload often.

Use Water based paint. Acrylic is the most popular but you can use Latex also. Just remember to seal it with a clear coat (flat/mat) And yes it is called a wash, Blackwash is Black paint ect. Hope this helps.

I make a wash with flat black and thinner. I dab it all over the piece then dry it off with a towel.

Another alternative that I've used is, oddly enough, leather dye. Finish painting the piece and coat it with your choice of clear finish (I used two coats of flat clear finish), let that dry over night. When you black wash, dab some paint thinner onto a rag, wipe the piece with that, then put some of the dye onto another rag, wipe the piece with that and quickly wipe it off with the rag wet with paint thinner. The dye will remain in any crevices or depressions you have and will leave a hint of a black residue that looks great. The end result is a little more subtle than spraying on some black paint and quickly wiping it off. Take a look at my finished Mk VI helmet (link in my sig) to see what this method can do.
