Well, for helmets people usually use Pepakura. However it's more complicated than foam and there are a bunch of steps involved. I would suggest foam, but really it's up to you.

For me with my build, I went with pepakura for my helmet, and foam for my armor. :)

I feel like its easier for the average person to get a greater detailed helmet out of a pep build. That said, it would be helpful if you would detail exactly what your goal is (type of helmet, accessories, ect) so everyone can give you a more educated answer.

most prefer foam because it can be easier to work with and lightweight to wear and either buy resin casted helmets or they make them from pep. others prefer pep because they like the durability after they fiberglass resin and bondo the pep. the pep can be easy to fix slap some fiberglass and bondo on broken area and your good to good, with the foam armor sometimes you have to fully remake a piece when they get damaged. One big problem is warping on the pep but sometimes that be fixed by heating with a heat gun.

Honestly both have their pros & cons, For a beginner, foam is the obvious choice as it's easy to work with. However Foam does have it's drawbacks, no matter what you do, it will always look like foam & after long use, foam armor gets these creases & wrinkles in it & you eventually have to replace parts.

With Pep, you are able to get better detail, but it takes alot of work & alot patience. As has been said, Pep is the better option for helmets, however the hardest part of Pep is getting the sizing right, halogoddess has a great tutorial on sizing pep files & if you decide to go that route, you should definitely check it out.

In the end no one can decide which way will be better for you, you have find your own method...I suggest trying both methods & see which way works best for you.

Good luck!

Pepakura is harder, but may crack more often, and foam when dropped, will not crack, but over time if you wear your costume for walking alot, you will see that pepakura is more durable.
