Tactical/Hard Case

Hey 405th,
I was just thinking. In Halo Reach, one of the 'Utility' items is the tactical hard case thing. This is like a pocket, for a half-ton super soldier. In the campaign you actually see Kat-B320 use this. In my pending ODST build, I was thinking of doing something similar, any ideas?

For reference, it's this:

The description is "For those things you don't want to lose or break."
It 'clips' onto the left thigh.

Regards, 221

P.S. I kinda want a comfy place for my phone.

Yeah they are pretty cool, I am making one on my Spartan armour to hold my wallet :)
I'm still not sure whether to make it from foam or pepakura. If I were you I'd make it once the thigh armour is put together so you can fit it properly.

I'm pretty sure I just saw one of these on one of the Kat builds around now. I wondered if it was a pocket, I'm not familiar with her character. That thread probably has a good idea of how to do it.

Looking at it, it seems like an ideal candidate for foam construction, especially if you're putting valuables inside. You'll be able to slice in dedicated compartments to stop things bumping around.

I believe LilTyrant's Kat build features a Hard Case, and HaloGoddess has made a foam file for it.

Personally, I'm considering making mine out of something more durable than foam, especially if I want to keep my phone and wallet in there. I definitely don't want to be on deployment and find that somebody's light fingers have managed to breach the foam and steal my valuables.

Yep, it was LilTyrant's Kat. Linked above.

Perhaps an encasement in foam coating epoxy like Epsilon will help with ruggedness and "impermeability"?

I've seen some builds (check out thorn696's noble six build) use an actual tactical thigh pouch to house valuables. I personally think that this type of case would probably fit your ODST build better than a Mjolnir Tactical case. Here are some pictures of what I'm talking about...

Of course you'll have to do some searching online for the right color scheme (most likely a black case), but It would be a lot more secure and safe to store your valuables in.

I have to agree that the hardcase seems more like a MJOLNIR thing, and I'm planning on looking into some soft cases for the left thigh on my ODST (which i also intend to use for things like phone and wallet). However, if you want to use the hard case, more power to you.

Personally, I'd make it out of pepakura, if you can get a pattern for it, and put some sort of padding inside to keep things from rattling around too much. That said, a hard case is one of the few things I'd be comfortable making out of foam, as it doesn't do much bending. The foam would also have the intrinsic quality of being internally padded.

I suppose the problem is how are you going to keep it closed? I figure you should make the top piece detachable and affix it with magnets or maybe velcro (if you don't want magnets that close to your phone). If you're really ambitious, you might even add a hinge.

If you ask me, the problem is attaching it to your leg, as a thigh plate curves and the hard case doesn't. You'd probably want to reconcile that with some sort of putty, or maybe bondo if the surfaces will take to it.

What I did was hang a leg rig off my belt and strapped it around my thigh armor.. It was about $16 on Amazon. They have different types of attachments you can put on it, or you can make something yourself.Leg Rig.jpg my cell wedged in there nicely and I could even feel it vibrate when someone called me! (which is funny because i never feel my phone vibrate in my pocket....).

For a case like that I would look into doing some creative thermo forming or vacuum forming with thermo plastic. I prefer Kydex myself since I do custom knife sheaths and other things with it. It is slightly expensive and if your only gonna do the one case probably not worth the cost. There are other thermo plastic that are easier to work with. You can find great deals on thermo plastic sheets on Amazon. Kydex is offered in several colors also. Really depends on what you want.
