O.k. I am playing with my Maya and I came up with this helm for Warhammer 40k. It's probably one of the easiest files, but I am still learning to use the software and I don't think it's looks too bad.

I am not sure if it's any good for making a Helm out of but if someone would like to try, I've included the .pdo file below. I just ask that you post some pics so I can live vicariously through you...

Peace

I'll give it a go Chewie. Any chance of some Howling Banshee stuff lol?

I would normally cry heresy, but this thread gets the Ordo Xenos seal of approval

Edit: First unfold was messy, but I'll keep pushing at it

Edit 2: Very very hard. I've been trying to cut it up into easier to pep chunks to no avail

Let me know how I can refine the piece to make it unfold better. It's my first attempt and I knew everyone on 405th would help sort it out.

I didn't do the mane because really it should be hair and I don't think peping it was worth my time... :) but I say that sarcastically, do you think I should pep it?

I am working on a Striking Scorpion right now, but I will get to the banshee in an hour or so... The kids are in bed and the wiffy is at work... finally some ME Time!!! :)

As intresting as this looks and as much fun I have with unfolding anything Warhammer, I'll give this a shot if I can get some free time in before the end of the week.

Well to be honest, to me it seems a bit too well done. Not having done much unfolding it's hard for me to explain it, but I can't seem to adjust it into large polygons for peping. The model itself is brilliant, just too, I dunno curved/detailed to fit into a pep well. I'll get a screenshot up for you to show you what I mean

As you can see a straight unfold doesn't form easy to pep chunks. I've messed around with the angle threshold and tired cutting it up manually but as you can see...

The model itself doesn't lend itself well to it, with very few whole edges. It might be just that I'm a noob at unfolding though, and maybe one of the masters will have more success

Thanks for the Help guys I really appreciate it. I am trying to unfold the Scorpion Helm I just created and I am going back and forth between Pep and Maya reducing the Poly count...

and then ...

I noticed that you can actually edit the Pep file directly to smooth out the seams...

Click on the 3d menu -> Edit Mode -> Edit model

Select the vertex or "Joints" and move them to smooth the pep out. I just figure this out so try it and see if it works for you...

And Nin, I'd love any feedback you might have for me, or are one of the resident experts on the topic! :p

I tried that but it seems to have made it worse, but I have the feeling Nintendude or someone will work it out and we'll have a few lovely helmets to build. Lets just pray our souls aren't devoured by Slaanesh before then

O.k. here is the Striking Scorpion Helm I was working on tonight.

Striking Scorpion Helm

I was working on unfolding a simple version I was working on but gave up to add in some more detail to the helm. This isn't very detailed but it's good for my second attempt, right?

This isn't an accurate copy of a helm but more of an combination of some first edition troops I have in my case and some current troop I've found in the GW store. The original helms were more round and narrow and the newer helms are more flat topped and boxy looking. I also didn't add in the Soul Stones but I figured like the Mane for the Avengers they would be best added separately. As well as some of the other details like vents and raised markings.

What do you guys think... (and I know it's heresy lol but I'm a die hard Eldar Fan and could take on any squad of marine with one warlock and a Solitaire back in the day when Harlequins were an unstoppable force. I miss the Rogue Trader days... Even second edition was OK.

The new rules are for people who don't have an imagination! :p

Looks nice!

Harlequins might not be what they used to but Eldar can still hold their own. I haven't played against Eldar since 3rd ED, but you'll be glad to know my brother beat me soundly. 5 Terminators, 10 Tactical Marines, Land Raider, Dreadnought and 5 Assault Marines, all taken out by an Avatar, 16 Guardians and a Falcon Grav tank

Your second model looks much improved. The trick in modelling for pep is to keep the poly count as low as you can without sacrificing the shape and detail.

Very very nice Tango,

Thanks Dancing_fool, I am going back to the models and reducing the Polys. The first model my goal was make it smooth, the second was to make it pep well. Now the goal is to make it pep perfect!

I will come back to these models later not I am going to pep a Howelling Banshee

I tried posting some of these progress files on B&C and they deleted them... Not the best way to build community!

Here's a Dark Reaper Helm,

I am getting better understanding Maya, I have been smoothing the faces when I really only need to Divide them. Look Out everyone I am getting dangerous with this stuff! Next stop Bungie 3d modeling department!!! :p

This unfolds a lot easier... I have to find a good photo of the Banshee but I promise they are next... or maybe the swooping hawks? :lol too many 40k helms too little time!

Nice work Chwbcc. I saw these briefly on B&C, then...gone? Anyway, I'd like to see some of these pepped, although I'm not a fan at all of Eldar, it would still be cool seeing them.

Yeah BC yanked them because it's not Space Marine... what ever. I think I am going to go through all the forces. Any requests?

Here's the Howling Banshee I've promised. I know I still need more practice but you can see that in two days I have managed to get a better handle on the software. Now, I know that these are not perfect representations but they would still look pretty good for Cosplay.

So here's some more files to play with.

Chewie, I've got aa cheque to put in the bank, but once it clears and I pay my bills, I'll try to buy a licence for Pep Designer and get my Striking Scorpion unfold up. Should happen within the next week or two unless life, work, or an unexpected bill get in the way. Until then, my laptop's staying on with my unfold open in pep

Awesome! I would love to see the results. The Manic side of my personality is in a Maya mood right now and I haven't had too much time to really peps these. Purchasing the license is well worth the money because there is so much you can do with it.

A fellow 405th member was kind enough to give me a key, so the files are done!

I'll start working on the Dire Avenger file, and hopefully have something for you in a couple of days

Edit: These files have the same names as Chwbcc's orignal files, because a)I was too darn lazy to change it and b)they're still his files and the hardest work was done by him. If you want to have a copy of both the folded and unfolded files, you'll need to do a save these under a different name
