"By the way your army fights, I should have marched our women down here instead"

Found at HBO:

You can read the history of Thermopylae in the oldest available account, The History of Herodotus. It's available online. Book VII, the part containing the battle, is here: http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/h/her...s/h4/book7.html

The battle itself begins a little after this line (which you can search for): "Leonidas had come to be king of Sparta quite unexpectedly." It's an awesome account, and it's astounding that it's survived in memory for 2500 years.

It's a tough read because the language is so very very old, but there are a few gems in there. Heres some great sections I found in the text that really exemplify the heroism of the Spartans in this battle:

"He had now come to Thermopylae, accompanied by the three hundred men which the law assigned him, whom he had himself chosen from among the citizens, and who were all of them fathers with sons living."

"It is said that Leonidas himself sent away the troops who departed, because he tendered their safety, but thought it unseemly that either he or his Spartans should quit the post which they had been especially sent to guard. For my own part, I incline to think that Leonidas gave the order, because he perceived the allies to be out of heart and unwilling to encounter the danger to which his own mind was made up. He therefore commanded them to retreat, but said that he himself could not draw back with honour; knowing that, if he stayed, glory awaited him, and that Sparta in that case would not lose her prosperity. "

"By this time the spears of the greater number were all shivered, and with their swords they hewed down the ranks of the Persians; and here, as they strove, Leonidas fell fighting bravely, together with many other famous Spartans, whose names I have taken care to learn on account of their great worthiness"

"Here they defended themselves to the last, such as still had swords using them, and the others resisting with their hands and teeth; till the barbarians, who in part had pulled down the wall and attacked them in front, in part had gone round and now encircled them upon every side, overwhelmed and buried the remnant which was left beneath showers of missile weapons."

I was very sad that my local imax is not playing the movie. I will be seeing it again this weekend. If you haven't seen it yet, go this weekend. definitely worth it.

plus, the trailer for Grindhouse showed before the movie.

Hey, Last night over XLive I heard that the 300 moive is making some people in the middle east mad because of the way the persians are in it, any hear this too?

Yeah. I saw that story too. Bummer. Funny thing is it was on the front page of both MSN and CNN last night but for a VERY short time, and now the story can't even be found without a search.

(wait though commercial)

I don't think the fimmakers intended this as a insult to Persian culture. It's a story...and in this story Xerxes is undoubtedly the villian. But the Iranians aren't making the distinction between Xerxes forces, and the Persian people in general... it's NOT the same thing.

It's just sort of bad timing. Its just because of this suspected confrontation with Iran that they are attacking this film and using it as a means of drawing attention to their cause.

Thats why the news story dissapeared overnight.

I agree. :Steve:

how do people in the middle east see these movies? Im serious, everytime i see some photo its all houses and markets. we got like middle east media spys in the US?

...........sad thing is its true, its obvious they have people here as spies, but they got people that just sit around in here and just wait for something in our own country to make us look bad to the rest of the world and make their cause look better, its using propoganda like the Nazi's and Communists, we use it too though, thats just how war works, they fight us on our own soil even if its not using conventional weapons or means

Iran is a far more civilized nation than you think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran Just because they are in that region doesn't mean that it's the stone age over there. They get our movies, although most of them are banned from showing in theaters. The MSN article said that bootleg copies of 300 were already availble there.

Agreed. EVERY country has spies, even us. Its just the nature of national security.

But I think that this outrage over 300 will probably blow over, at least in our media. Might be a different story over there.

I read this amd I was like, "Oh yeah because W and the Hollywood are in a conspiricey". First off we, as Americans, know this ain't even close. That what makes Iranian officals statements so damn funny. How did they see the movie? Did some one give them an advanced copy?

Aside from that I am excited about this movie. Infact, I think there needs to be a tribute in costume to the Spartans of '300'. I'd like to see the Spartans from '300' and the Halo Spartans side by side at a con some where. Great for some photo shots I think.

Theres alot of movie prop replicas available from WB Shop online. Most of them are sold out, but you can always find them on eBay too.

Prices are very reasonable.

Personally I'd like one of the battle damaged Leonidas helmets w/ the mane. If you go to the 300 site you can see a video of their prop department making these.

Very cool.
