ive read that Valve is eagerly awaiting this fan project. hopefully they'll hire some of these guys if the game is good, hence Portal was a college project by two women who valve picked up after seeing what they could do. ;)

Close but no cigar. The original version of Portal was known as Narbacular Drop, developed by a small group (5, 6 people) of college students at the Digipen Institute of Technology as a senior project. All the projects get to show at the GDC, and theirs got noticed by Valve software. Gabe Newell approached them and told them the concept of the game had alot of merit. He offered them jobs and they where hired on the spot.

Then came Portal!

Has Valve really been waiting for this? I havn't heard a peep out of them in the way of the BMS project... And I highly doubt that they'll go and hire the BMS team. Though, it is possible... their level design, animation, and coders might be sought after. Heck, TurtleRockStudios (the company that produced Left 4 Dead and Counter Strike) was recently procured by Valve software.

crytek would be cool, but probably unnessesary for those of us with 4 year old computers. I'm glad to see that everyone else is as into this as I am.

Well I wouldn't mind if was only on PC but... anyway having the portal gun in the real world would pose some challenges such as what happens when you shoot one up into the skybox, what kinds of material are "portalable" and other things

Portal 2 is supposed to have more to do w/ the rest of the Half Life universe (Portal is part of HL's universe), and I believe there are supposed to be quite a few nods to Portal in Half Life 2: Episode 3.

A direct copy/rip of Half Life (1). Looks super tasty sweet though. The devs can even save some time and effort by simply doing a direct rip of most of the sounds/speech.

I remember playing Half Life fondly. That initial opening credit sequence made my jaw drop and I sat there quivering in anticipation to let me get into it. Also at the time, the marines were the most awesome bad-guy to ever grace the screen of a PC. When you heard their radio commands to regroup/flank etc, you knew you were in for a hell of a time, or the next thing you would hear was the "clank" of a grenade coming over the top of the crate you were taking cover behind.

Awesomeness.
