At my work, I haven't had a new job cross my desk since November. The work I'm doing on old jobs is stalled too because people don't wanna' pay anyone right now.
Normally, this is a slow time of year for us anyways, so it's already planned for, but I don't know how long I can sit here as pure overhead, just toying around on the internet all day, every day. I keep waiting for the discussions of cutbacks, and doing everything I can to be at work early, and stay a little late (I'm salary) to keep up appearances, and to show I'm a team player.
There's only one other guy in my department, and he's my boss. Normally I take his overflow work, but there's just nothing at the moment. This can't last more than a few months or I'm gone, I know it.
I also can't really put my resume out there for two reasons.. #1- if I land in a worse position they might close even before my original job does. There's just no guarantee's for anyone right now. #2- if my boss catches wind of it (they are on the lookout for kinda' thing) I'll get fired.
I'm focusing on making money through hobbies, and should start getting that second income soon. On one hobby, I'm "working" as an advisor for a company that makes props/ masks/ etc.. I'm the guy that oversee's the masks /props in development, and indicate accuracy changes and stuff. If I give them something that causes them to change their design to incorporate my ideas, I'm given a small percentage of sales on the eventual items, but that assumes there ARE sales. So far they haven't completed molds for them yet, but I'm credited on three masks so far.
My gf had her hours cut recently, and money was tight even before that happened. My other hobby income thing should be starting soon, but there's no guarantee of success with it, and the intial capital outlay looks rough. I'm forced to keep details a secret though because it won't work unless I can do it very cheaply with no other hands in the pot. Competition would kill it right at the starting gate. Even if it succeeds, it'll only last for a little while, and likely won't be REAL lucrative in this economy, but every little bit counts, and with luck it'll open additional doors down the road.
If the economy doesn't start improving soon, it's gonna' get bad around my triplex apartment. I'm already concerned that none of the other tenants are paying their rent.. we're it, and our money isn't covering all the bills for the landlord. Lose the apartment and I'll lose it all because of how tight the budget is right now... there' no money for "first and last on a new place."
Scary times..
