Mannequins provide a visual picture of what an outfit would look like on a customer. Having a personal mannequin benefits especially those who alter clothes or make clothes. Owning mannequins that are the size of each family member provides a great tool for those working with clothes.
Things You'll Need
- Duct tape
- T-shirt
- Plastic wrap
- Scissors
- Newspaper
- Cotton matting
- 1 x 3 lumber
Instructions
- Place the model for the mannequin in a standing position, wearing a long T-shirt. Make sure the room is cool.
- Wrap duct tape horizontally around the model, beginning at the bottom, at mid-thigh. Wrap snugly, but not so tight to compress the body or create wrinkles in the tape.
- Use shorter pieces of tape around the chest area. Place tape diagonally over the chest.
- Use plastic wrap around the neck area for protection. Wrap the tape to form edges at the neck and armholes.
- Wrap a second layer of duct tape vertically over the whole form, pressing as you go to avoid wrinkles. Add a third layer horizontally.
- Smooth over the wrinkles. Cut off the form with scissors in the back. Assist the model in carefully removing the form.
- Make a stand for the form with 1 x 3 pieces of lumber. Cut a piece a couple of inches shorter than the width of the model's shoulders. Cut another piece that will be as tall as you wish the mannequin to be. Connect the short form to the vertical form to make a T shape. Tape cotton matting to the T shape to protect the mannequin. Make an X shape base from 1 x 3 pieces and attach the T-shape.
- Fit the form over the stand and tape over the cut opening in the back with more duct tape. Stuff the form with cotton matting, being careful not to change the shape.
Tips & Warnings
Cut the sleeves off the shirt if necessary so the tape can follow the figure of the body.
