Hey guys i was searching the internet on how to make Oil Based Clay so i went through multiple site looking and all i got was the kids crafting clay dough a bunch its a simple recipe non toxic just to soft and not stiff no good for sculpting so i went to water based clay and the only bad this about regular water based clay is it dries up and cracks so I came upon this great site on how to make Water Based Clay thet dosent dry I was like OMG and it's really simple i know this guy is from sweden but all the stuff you can get a craft stores

-List-
Clay powder.
Glycerine. Try to find one that is at least 85%.
Talcum powder (baby powder works fine).

All this stuff can either be found at walmart, a craft or hobbie store and i dont think this is non toxic the only bad this is if you try and make alot at once it might start on fire but its still looks really good ill post the link.I should be trying this when i get some clay powder if i can find any so look forward to that

Read the website topic. It look likes a really good method. But it stills involves going to a clay selling or a crafts store. I wish you can make one with one trip to walmart.

I want to try it, i wonder how good the qualities of the clay is. Can it take good detail

The only clays that I know that can't take good detail are model magic and playdough. Clay quality really depends on what the clay base that you're starting with does. And quite frankly, having the ability for regular clay to dry to leather hard before you make a mold from it is much more advantageous than having clay that absolutely will not dry. The addition of glycerin doesn't mean that it won't dry, it just increases it's drying time. A lot of clay casting slips and cake icings have the addition of glycerin or some similar chemical in them so that they can continue to flow for longer periods of time and so they do not dry up in their containers over time.

If you want to spend the time and money on clay that will hold extreme detail and not dry out, I would acquire plasticine or wedge a black mold culture into a bag of porcelain clay and wait for 3 months to use it. Plasticine doesn't dry and the moldy porcelain will give you the ability for applications that require high detail and elasticity.

you can have it dry you have to either wipe it witha wet sponge which he states in his website and it will let the out side layer dry, or you coat it with clear spraypaint to mold it. And not everyone wants to wait 3 months to sculpt something this is an easy way to make good clay that you can get the supplies almost every where. I understand what you are saying but you have to consider the pluses and everything has it disadvantages, just wait ill see if this is any good and ill try some other things to see whats better and whats not

What's wrong with just an old fashion playdough recipee, flour + salt + water
I takes days to dry out. I'm trying to think back to the last time I made some and dried it in the oven. I can't remember if it cracked / shrunk or not.

Ive done the old recipe but its always to soft and it dosent take detail well, i was just trying to show people an alternative to water based clay that may crack and oil based clay and when you use an oven it will shink it and water based clay will crack you have to get the pottery clay

Wait....water base clay can crack? Or the alternative clay can crack?

I practice sculpting with playdoh before, it's too weak, and can stretch far. Plus when you draw a line on it with a knife, it has so much excess play doh coming out of it
