minimum orders are a real buzz kill... the hardware store i work at used to buy some of it's camping gear from a certain supplier, but they decided to up the minimum from $500 to $1000... needless to say, we don't buy from them now and have found better products, cheaper elsewhere... also, i checked out some gloves on ebay the other week and found these groovy dudes... i like the black ones best...

aye i dont know if someones suggested it yet, but how about a go pro camera or watevs they are. basically they mount to your head and they about the same sie as the camera attachments on the helmets. bit costly though, however im pretty sure they hold heaps of footage

Ive seen the oled stuff before, i thought that it being so close to your eyes, that it wouldnt be very easy to see and or read, so i had the idea to have 2 high def displays overlayed to mimic your actual eyesight, the good part about this is you wouldnt need an actual face shield. With a solid face shield the strength of the suit would be a lot stronger... the only issues i can see is the entire suits power grid and suit wide systems connections, how are you planning on doing that? my plan was to fix ribbon cables throughout the suit for everything

Same thing, Ribbon cables for multiple wires, and bundles of 3 when not. most likely sewn to the suit in some fashion, and underneath a base layer of clothing of course to conceal any wiring.

I thought so as well pertaining to the OLED display. but it wouldnt just be displayed, it would be stereoscopically displayed so that you would look through the display, no need to focus on the lens when you need to keep your eye on the prize so to speak.

while these displays do exist, none are for sale.
finding a pico projection unit to provide anything similar is becoming difficult.
back to the original idea of dissecting the premade visor from recon instruments.
I wonder if i can contact them through email and purchase one module outright?
hmmm..... i might go try that.

Lemme know how that goes, the recon group always interested me, I just never really researched them. Have you checked out some of the full suits that have been built already? Such as the guy in canada? And the military's XOS Powered exo skeleton?

yea, alot of that was bookmarked in my laptop.
Project on hold for the time being. Critical harddrive failure in my laptop.
lost nearly 500 gb of data, and my primary drive. gotta order another.
Will be back and up'n'runnin in a week or so (shipping time conclusive)

lame, hate it when that happens, i have a portable backup harddrive after the first time that happend to me

Let me know if your anywhere near southeast MI in the next few days. I can see about trying some data recovery on it for you.

What data did you need to go through with this? From what I gather most of your work should be fabrication and assembly right?

Have you found anything for the heads up display? From what little research I've done all I can find is some OLEDs that aren't quite big enough for a full visor. Little displays in key spots could work, but that limits how dynamic the information could be.

Theoretically if we could find a large enough OLED, would they be see through? Or would you take the "augmented reality" approach and use the camera to play back to the display and then overlay the HUD?

I have seen some oled displays that are see through used as laptop monitors (I think it was Samsung) that you could use as your HUD, but I don't think they are on the market yet. I think they will be in the next year or so along with several other types of oleds. On a side note I think you should install a button camera inside the helmet with facial recognition and voice program like with the kinect so you could access and run programs off you off preset facial ques and voice command. Also in this thread is the HAZ/OP Helmet http://www.405th.com/showthread.php/25925-Reach-HAZOPs-helmet. Enjoy, I love the enthusiasm that you are putting into this. Oh yeah I for got these links
and some on d3o armor

Well the closest (and cheapest!) I've gotten is the Wrap 310XL by Vuzix. Since you are going with the headmounted camera anyways, it would be easy to integrate the two, but it would still require an intermediate source to overlay what information you need.

I'll be buying a pair shortly, and I'll be sure to include some close up pictures around the key parts for a teardown

exactly almost, ive got a different mounting system in mind though, hard to explain through text, but im confident enough in my programming skills, and a couple friends of mine, that ill be able to integrate that into the display, if not however i already have a back up plan with a small dim led display, and a viewfinder screen...

the voice operating system was and is a very attractive addition, along with the lcd face shield but, the face shields not readily available enough yet, and im gonna wait to even think about the voice os untill i have the hardware that it would require already installed, so thatll be a little while
and the great part of those oled screens is that you can get them to lighten and darken depending on how bright it is out, kinda like those auto tinting glasses

that d3o place has some excellent stuff too

Since I'm doing the Mk V, I don't have the option of a head mounted camera, so I was thinking of concealing one camera in the bottom light hole on each side and having the LEDs in the top. What I'm wondering is if I'd need two camera to make it feel centered, or if I could get away with one, and perhaps use some offsetting technique to get it to feel like it is?

The other possibility would be to fit the LEDs in their usual location (Blue circles), but hide the cameras inside the cheek bumps (Red circles)

Only problem I might have is getting them inside the cheek bump while still being pointed directly forward, and making it not seem extremely obvious they are cameras.

Next, and during, my R&D, I do need to start fabrication. Turns out my laptop's mobo is FRIED. It could be both, so im not taking any chances at this time. Currently stripping my lappy down, and pinpointing what my exact issue is.
As far as HUD. Yes, Samsung is producing transparent OLED displays for laptop and cellphone use. No they are not currently available.
The vuzix displays are a viable option. A method of softmounting inside the helmet is the next step. Mind you the back of the helmet will be flexible, or will hinge out and latch back, and to put my helmet on, one would set their chin in place first, then pull the helmet over the rest of their head, so with the respirator interface and a soft mounted display like the vuzix (if it is translucent indeed) this method of display and interfacing will provide the best (with current tech) methods of providing display information.
As for the camera. you will need to set up for stereoscopic compensation for having something out at your ears. it will take quite a bit to get used to.
Your best bet is to conceal the cam as close to your eyes as possible.
Wont be anywhere in the states anytime soon. Going to China Lake, CA in a month. Currently stationed on Guam.

interesting, that d3o is some pretty cool stuff! interesting development there.... now...will it stand to ballistics is my next question.

I don't think the D3o will stop a bullet on it's own I was think more like the gel layer of the under suit. Maybe if combinded with some other elements like this idea
you could have a bullet proof under suit.
