I'd love it if new members were required to view specific threads before they could join the general populace on the forum. Kind of a 'click here if you have read and agree" thing.

We could guide new members through the basic things they need to knwo before they even show up in the forums. That way we wouldn't have to be answering the same 10 questions over and over again.

Only the single greatest suggestion EVER!.....Seriously..

I have a suggestion. The 405th should have it's own channel on youtube. Machinima has it's own channel for all things machinima, so why not have a channel for the 405th?

For armor making/props WIPs? That idea for all of us to be able to contribute to one channel will somehow get out of control with people uploading bogus videos and whatnot.... I'm not sure if this is such a great idea.. IMO.

Perhaps not, but there is potential with it.
Maybe mix this in with my idea of the cons?

I could see that allowing for someone to find the video tutorials they need a lot easier than usual. For example, you could make an "All Things Pep" playlist and new users or anyone interested in seeing the process of pepakura could just watch the videos in said playlist. Some more examples would be painting or molding playlists. But we still need someone to moderate what exactly goes up on the channel, and i'm not sure how to do that without having a sole person run the account and add videos as needed.

3) Perhaps make use of admins but such in a way that may seem a little off to everyone.
( Plese bare with me on this) Make people in certian parts of the country incharge of
con/ event gatherings. Instead of letting Mods and Adam do all the work, split up the responsibilities:
For example:
I live in San Diego. Therefore I'll put together meeting places, times, Hotel reservations for members
and piling up additional info. Because I'm "in charge" of this con, there's a topic for me that serves as a
place for me to post information as it comes up. These topics are also for members to share info
(includes a place for people who want to room together for the event)

Hows that?

I agree with that! ^^

And put a timer on the page for about 30 seconds so they can't just skim to the bottom and click it to skip reading it..that way they HAVE to read it.

Would be bad.

Because if you have read the entire thread before, and there's only 1 new reply, you'll have to wait 30 seconds to add something.

Will get boring ...

Saw this in another forum.

A trash thread. where noobs can practice posting videos and pictures without flooding up
other threads. It can be cleaned out like monthly or something.

I don't think it's that hard to post a video personally, and a trash section invites people to flood. But I don't like flood :p

It could have a system rigged that recognizises someone who has read the thread before.

I think it should only be applied to the stickies, once we get around to cleaning those up, of course.

And I have another suggestion:

When posting on a thread that hasn't been posted in, say, 20 days, it should have a little popup that says "This thread has not been posted on in 20 (Number should change according to actual count) days. Are you sure you want to post this reply? Yes/No."

I am still a noob by far and working or my first armor but have you guys thought of having a "bonus" for donations like for an X amount donation you get a 405th sticker with your name on it "if you wanted your name so when you had your costume on for halo-ween or any convention you may run into someone... makes for a great convo piece and its just another way to help the site for all the help us noobs get.

How exactly does that help the site? It doesn't really help n00bs either. You basically are asking for something in exchange for a donation, which eliminates the 'Donation' bit.

A good idea to help the site and integrates the donate button to add a second button, an 'Advertisement' button. All money that goes there goes to 405th ads on the net, and the donate button stuff goes to site fees and maintnance.

Adam and spase sometimes have 405th merchandise(hats and shirts) available in the classified section. I believe that the profits from that go back to the 405th by paying for the server, site maintenance, etc... So basically when you buy 405th stuff your benefiting everyone anyway!
And if you really want a sticker with your name on it, ask one of the staff if your aloud to use the 405th symbol and find somewhere that will make a couple of stickers for you.

Never underestimate the ability of people to ignore/overlook material placed directly in front of them. I'd suggest doing things like they do in the Army, break it down "Barney-style." Condense the forum rules and basic etiquette into a short, sweet, easy to read format that an 8 year-old can understand. Emphasis on the short. I know some people who have the attention span of an ADD Chihuahua on speed. Anything more than a few bullet points and you've lost them. I would suggest a quiz on the rules after you've read them, but that would likely piss off people more than anything. I'm thinking the material should cover the restriction to the noob forum, the double post and necro posting rules, hijacking threads, an explanation of pepakura and an OBVIOUS link to the pep tutorial, an emphasis on READING THE STICKIES, and so on. You know, I think I just volunteered myself for something. Damn! <shuffles off to write 405th.com For Dummies>

Edit: I see that there is a Guidelines for a Better Forum in the Noob forum. I haven't read the stickies in ages, so I missed that addition. My suggestion is to make new members read a condensed version of that thread.

That would mean lots of coding.

I believe the mods are busy enough. Don't even know if it could be done :(

EDIT : Also, get the main page back up would be kewl! ^^

Instead of having Adam and Spase put up their items in classifieds, make a 405th store. (w/ hat, shirts, signs, ect)

Going with that idea, perhaps (if the coding isn't too much) maybe give permission to others on here to
customize some things for users/members and their own membership profile. (Don't go overbord like myspace)
Just add option to view items that members are offering for sale through their profile. (Like an Ebay store.)

For example: Adam has a great AR for sale.
He makes a few and puts them up for a set price on his profile.
We buy.
He ships.

Sound cool?

I quote:
"MjolnirArmor.com does not SELL ARMOR!" - as far as i know that includes the 405th. But the store idea for hats and shirts may be a good idea. (in fact, i think i remember spase or Adam mentioning it at some point, buy i may be wrong)
If someone has something for sale, the most convenient place for them to put it and for others to find it is the classifieds. If people start selling stuff in there profile, it will become disorganized, new people wont know were to go or who to see if we start telling them to look at peoples profiles to buy stuff.
