I use Poplar wood for my projects with a little pine thrown in. Good luck with your project.

I'm in the process of figuring it out now.

You should look into Arduino micro processors, they can be connected to all kinds of switches and screens. With a bit of programming, they can do practically anything. There also cheap. I'm sure a member with programming knowledge would be happy to write up the program for you.
