I saw you win on youtube. What was that little thing they gave you?

I found a good deal & picked up a compression suit like yours. Unfortunately it's the short sleeve version. I cant wait to get it in the mail.

COngrats on the WIN! Also, the crossed shot gun pic is Beast! Looks like you're about to bring the heat..lol:)
Thanks for the Congrats... To be honest I don't remember much of the contest due to all the nice people buying me drinks. #1 Reason: They wanted to see what the chief looked like under the helm.
I'm hoping to do more photo shoots with both shotguns at a later date.

OMG Congratz! I knew right you will :D

Thanks Constrictor!

I just seen you winning the contest on YouTube, you were the best looking one :)

Thanks F.S.! There were lots of us around, but not all of us made it to the stage. I do recall having lots of fun and even got a nice personal congrats from Steve Downes (voice of master chief)

The prize given to me is an xbox controller. :)
Short sleeve version is nice in the hot weather situation. It will let you cool off faster than with the long sleeve version.

I have posted the good pics from Halofest to my alter ego's FaceBook page: http://www.facebook.com/SpartanLongShotX
I'll add some of them directly here in due time.

How I celebrated Halo Reach's 1 year birthday and
Spartan LongShot-X's 1 year debut.

Hey Kevin, great photos! I always enjoy seeing what poses you're going to do next. :cool

I actually have a question for you regarding your suit, specifically the strapping. Do you have any issues with stress on the straps between the codpiece and thighs while sitting down? That's one of the main problems I have with my suit. I can sit down in my suit, but it stresses the straps that I have (2 on each side, total of 4) to the point that sometimes they will fall off and I have to re-attach them. Any advice would be welcome.

Keep up the great work! :)

The only issue that I have with the codpiece and thighs while sitting down, is this:
- The front cod part likes to rub against the top of the inner thigh areas. This does cause damage to the thighs. Some areas will need to be re-glassed but in the meantime it makes excellent battle damage (wear and tear)
- I can feel the rear thigh straps being stressed a bit but not to the point where they will break. I used lots of resin to hold the thigh straps in. Some times these need to be re-adjusted as they do slip a bit from the tri-glide sliders. I'd rather they slip than break. Hence the constant tweeking with the strapping between uses.

The cod piece is semi floating. Its attached to the thigh straps at the front and completly free floating at the back plate.

Those are the only things that come to mind.

Hmmm... I'll have to schedule a photo session showing those details. :)

Thanks for your compliment Spitfire.

:)

I have had similar issues, changing the webbing strap for strong elastic help a lot.

Ooo I would like to make a request. Can you, whenever you have the chance, put up on Youtube a longshot-x goes to walmart video? I love seeing people's reaction in all the videos of cosplayer's going to Walmart.

I like the setup you've got going buddy. Also, it's always enjoyable to see your photos ans what you come up with. Great job.:)

Ahhh... It's that time of the year again. Just a few weeks way from "HALOween"
I have been busy with repairs and a few minor tweeks and adjustments. The wiring for the Speakers/Mic/Smartphone had to be replaced. Found a dimmer switch for the helm head lights (will install that later)

But for now. I figured that I would photo bomb this thread with a few inspirational shots that I took in the backend of my workshop.

No photo editing has been done, with the exception of cropping.

Enjoy!

Heya Longshot, I Just got done with several hours of sanding my new helm, and was re-reading through your epic progress thread. I'm rather curious, how many hours did you spend sanding your helmet in particular? I've put ~8 hours into this helm sofar and am still going.

My new helmet is a bit of an experiment, I started by slush-casting a sizable layer of rodo(1/8"-1/4"), and then added 1 layer fiberglass. Then I started sanding, no bondo. Once the piece was relativly smoothed, I applied a thin layer of spot putty to the whole piece and sanded it off. It did a fair job removing the pinholes. I still dont know how small of an imperfection should warrent spot putty, so where did you draw the line?

My thought behind this was to avoid having brittle bondo on the surface, so that any impacts wont chip the surface. Still, I've also had some concerns about the paper on the surface. My last helm taught me that the paper will murder the surface finish if it gets wet, so what's to be done to polish over the exposed paper?

I'll splice some pictures of it into this post tomorrow, since its 2AM and I'm exausted.

I'm Hoping that once the month is over, I can begin to patiently rebuild my suit, instead of rushing everything and turning out unfinished, temporary pieces. Still, theres no time to sweat the details, I still need finish my friends suit in time for Halloween.

Thanks for being an awsome inspiration-

Well I have to say that this is yet another epic photo shoot, and perfect timing also. Yes the timing, I just had to show the wife you're suit so she could have a better understanding on what I was talking about, and up comes the you're newest photo's :cool
(And before you say it.... No I didn't use the line, But he has one.) :D It has however really made my job of explaining allot easier so Thanks for that. And always thank you for showing off this Epic suit of you'res

How long did I sand the helm? If I recall, I think it was somewhere betewen 10 and 16 hours, over the course of a few days. I had to wait for the bondo and spot putty to harden enough for sanding and then I use a light coat of primer to see the areas that needed to be spot puttied. I kept going at it until I was satisfied that there were no more visible pits or defects.

Paper surface: All of my paper surfaces (inside and outside) had 3 light coats of resin applied to the outside and 3 thick coats to the inside. This was done during the hardening phase (before I reinforced the inside with fiberglass) There should be no exposed paper anywhere. Then I applied bondo, where needed, primer, then the paint. With that many layers of "Stuff" there will be no issues with water.

Thanks Thorn! Now I have to ask: What was her response to all of this? :)

More pics will be coming, along with more progress/modification/repair photos. The mods to the cold weather undersuit will be next.

Cheers!

Well to be honest it went from "How much is this going to cost us?" to.... "And what is that that supposed to be?" to..... "Wow that look great" and last week it was walking up to complete strangers going ...."you want to see a really cool costume"

I think she's more geek'ed about it now then I am :cool

Thats fantastic to hear. I love it when various/mixed opinions change to an awesome remark or comment. Glad that your wife approves and seems to be getting invovled with your hobby.

Status update: Web site and posted pictures may not be showing (intermittent) due www.dns2go.com nameservers being down. :( I have just added a backup nameserver to my DNS. It should be resolved in the next 24-48 hours. Hopefully!

Cheers!

Here is a question kind of related to your build.

Can you post some pictures of your black backdrop setup? I just want to see how yours is done, so that I can make one.

JUSTINIAN!!!! (My fav UBER Halo CE Mark V build artist)

Hmmm.. not much to show. It's literally the corner back wall of my studio.

Here is what I am using:
Black tent ground liner (from Canadian Tire). I like the liner because it is less reflective than the next item listed below.
Black garbage bags for the area(s) where I ran out of tent liner. I'm not so keen on these because of the glossy reflective surface. --BUT-- they are cheap, abundant and they still work.
3M stick-on wall hooks (The removable wall hooks) I used these to hang the liner up onto the wall.
Black duct tape. I used this to tape the garbage bags to the ceiling and wall.
The dark grey floor mats, are the exact same ones that we use for our foam builds.

All that was left to do was to take a few test shots with the camera on a tripod and see how everything looks. NO FLASH! If I missed a spot, I would bring out the duct tape and a garbage bag and cover the offending non-black area. Then re-shoot and see.

It's kinda funny because I had just returned from a fabric store with 9 square meters of blue fabric to hang up in place of the black liner and bags. I want to experiment with a blue screen and examine the results. :)

I'll see about taking some pics of how I have things set up. --OR-- Better yet. I might have a camera man to help me with this... I'll have Chief do a video of how its all setup. Dang.. another item to add to my to do list. LOL

Very good question!

That sounds so simple. I never would have thought.

Is it a permanent setup, or do you take it down when you are not using it?

I leave it up, unless I have a need to take it down. So far I have had no need.

:)

Progress Update

OMG!!! I have not had one of these in quite a while. EXCITING!

With the snow fall that I just had, it was time to switch to the cold weather undersuit.

I'm using the SixSixOne Vapor Pressure Suit
for the upper body.

Crash Pads 2200 Thermal Padded pants
for the bottoms.

Like the hot weather undersuit, I wanted to add ELwire to the back.

Pic of the back showing the ELwire weave and a larger belt pouch.
(opps... looks like a wire fell down.)
img00025107_-_cropped.jpg

I still have to straighten out the wires.
img00025104_-_cropped.jpg

Experimenting with wearing a spine protector on the chest, instead of the back.
(
Not too thrilled with the glossy ab look
)
img00025083_-_cropped.jpg

Me! Showing what I wear under the helm.
I should have worn my ninja wig and Hidden Leaf head band.
img00025095_-_cropped.jpg

Web Cam shot, showing off the new gloves.

Cheers!
