Heya Longshot, I Just got done with several hours of sanding my new helm, and was re-reading through your epic progress thread. I'm rather curious, how many hours did you spend sanding your helmet in particular? I've put ~8 hours into this helm sofar and am still going.
My new helmet is a bit of an experiment, I started by slush-casting a sizable layer of rodo(1/8"-1/4"), and then added 1 layer fiberglass. Then I started sanding, no bondo. Once the piece was relativly smoothed, I applied a thin layer of spot putty to the whole piece and sanded it off. It did a fair job removing the pinholes. I still dont know how small of an imperfection should warrent spot putty, so where did you draw the line?
My thought behind this was to avoid having brittle bondo on the surface, so that any impacts wont chip the surface. Still, I've also had some concerns about the paper on the surface. My last helm taught me that the paper will murder the surface finish if it gets wet, so what's to be done to polish over the exposed paper?
I'll splice some pictures of it into this post tomorrow, since its 2AM and I'm exausted.
I'm Hoping that once the month is over, I can begin to patiently rebuild my suit, instead of rushing everything and turning out unfinished, temporary pieces. Still, theres no time to sweat the details, I still need finish my friends suit in time for Halloween.
Thanks for being an awsome inspiration-
