Alright so finally got farther than I ever have before, Im tackling a Rookie ODST helm (Ral Partha Unfold) and I wanted to do some work cutting and so I cut out the first two pages. Call me paranoid but Im already thinking this isn't going to fit. I printed it out with the scale set to 29 CM (using Designer 2) and Im 5'5"

Maybe its just because the pieces are so small, anyway I decided to line them up as if they were glued. I haven't folded yet.

Heres a picture of the line up, look at the 360 headset as a reference for size maybe?

Pepakura006.jpg

This shot has the xacto knife as a size reference

Pepakura008.jpg

And I wanted to throw this in here because I know this part is going to be a pain. Any tips? Considering how ridiculously close the folds are and how small this piece is.

Pepakura007.jpg

And here's a picture of me :)

Photoramacopy.jpg

Sorry if the pictures are too big.

Anyway, looking forward to folding these, and gluing and then really see where I'm at. I think I might go 2 pages a day because it took me 10 minutes a piece just to cut them out. But on weekends I will work more.

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

So I managed to fold and glue some pieces together (in fact most of the pieces from the first page) and it came out decent. My lack of valley folding is probably why it looks so bad because I didn't want to bother with those ridiculously close folds, I looked at some ODST helmets that didnt have those folds so I just followed their path.

Anyway, here is a picture of the front of what I assembled last night.

Pepprogresssession1001.jpg

And this has me slightly worried because of the shape its taking already, maybe its because I havent attached the other pieces that continue (from the back) but if anyone has made this helmet before and got this result at this part please let me know. Doesnt look too good.

Pepprogresssession1002.jpg

Back side of the piece. Remember this is just from the first page so there are 6 more pieces that continue this

Pepprogresssession1003.jpg

And here goes my uber lack of valley folding. Shame on me? Perhaps but I didn't think it would be worth it to bust my behind over something like this considering the folds are so incredibly smushed together.

Pepprogresssession1004.jpg

As posted before this is the Ral Partha version of the Rookie helmet. I need some pointers on the shape the helmet is taking so far because I may just want to start over. Also, did I NEED to fold those valley folds on said pieces where I didnt fold them?

Anyway, thats my progress so far, critiques (good and bad), and tips are more than welcome.

You should of done the valley folds, I think that's why it came out like that.

:( Crap... But while looking at the Pepakura viewer model it didn't look like it'd be too bad to not fold em.

Im going to see what other people say. It only took 2 hours to cut, score, fold, and glue so I kind of wouldn't mind re-doing the first page.

yes You need to adhere to Valley and mountain folds my freind. All though they are going to be a pain in the butt, they are going to make your finished peice all the more better. not to mention that the contours of that top are determined by the folds, they help it keep the shape.

As I have said before just take your time and look at the folds before commiting to Scoring thenb get it done. Im dying to see this completed and you wearing it dude come on im pullin for ya.

get those valley folds in there, Also you asked how i got my top shape: While i was doing the top i also put the Sides of that peice on as well and It followed the shape.

REMEMBER IF I CAN DO IT, a preschooler can.... LOL

yes, it is very helpfull to do those folds correctly. Ive done that pep now, and its alot easier to do those than to commit to adding layer of glass and bondo to thicken the area and then dremeling them out, which can get innacurate. Id very much reccomend doing those, and spend some intimate time finding the best way for you to do those.

Alright, going to re-print, cut carefully, score carefully, and fold intimately.

Thanks for all the help guys! Will have pics up as soon as I re-do the piece.

Hopefully I'll get some time tomorrow.

Likewise, my alignments were a bit out of whack when it came to the first few I did. And that super glue is no joke trying to get it out and then re-align them. And it was a bit difficult at first because I was trying to be as perfect as possible but that didn't last too long.

Going to take my time on everything this time. Currently Im at a free period at school (I wish i could work here lol, have a whole 2 hours free) but as soon as I get home Im going to re do that first page. Will have pictures tonight!

And Gir, no offense taken, I appreciate you noticing that some of my numbers were out of alignment.

As long as we learn from these happy accidents, we become better modelers/costumers. Like me for example I brought my helmet to work today to use my orbital samder on the 1st bondo coat and it went so well, that should have been a sign. But no I decided to use my dremel here at work in my shop to bring back the detail panel lines. Little did I know my dremel here is super strong and I was sooo exited that ***N00B Lesson*** there are going to be thiner spots in your helmet that a high speed dsremel will eat through before you can say oooooops oh s#*t. And I have a small hole in front in a panel line groove.

Please anyonew reading this be very careful with your dremel and take your time. Lesson learned.

I took pics will upload when I get homme I'm on my phone.

Srry to hijack your thread, just thought all us N00Bs should know this.

I still need to print out that first page, but I got an unexpected amount of crap to do today. Gonna see what I can do.

Hey Mjolnir Anything new to add How the work comming along? we all wanna see some work from ya man

To be extremely honest, on Thursday I got sick and ended up with a sore throat. On Friday I had a killer back pain, an intense fever, chills, and a headache that made me feel as if there was an overly loud rave party inside my head. On Saturday I was in bed the entire day with chills and a nose acting like niagra falls. And then Sunday I had the worst fever and serious coughs and a headache. Swine flu? Nah, today Im feeling a lot better. Still coughing though.

I plan to no life this entire weekend until Im done pepping this thing, because the weather here in Cali has gotten cold which means Im screwed when the resin stage comes up.

But thanks for asking! Glad to know someone is still looking forward to seeing this finished.

I kind of "gave up" but not any more, after seeing you with your helmet I need to finish mine before Halloween.

Words of wisdom, motivation and encouragement.

Definitely going to have to get off my ass to do it now.

Ahh another Cali dweller. Dude you so need to finish this so we can hang out at a convention or something. I have a friend doing an ODST build too so it could be pretty sweet. Anyways keep it up and yeah those small lines may be a pain but they do make it look good in the end just like those annoying round pieces...

I like your thinking man. Definitely will have an entire suit done by next year but for now just focusing on the helmet. For a convention build I will re-do everything and make an entire helmet. I was planning to go to comic con with a few buds next year (the san diego one) but I doubt that will happen considering most of them don't seem too excited about even making their helmets anymore. But yeah man keep in touch that'd be awesome.

:(

Dead project, not going to be able to finish before Halloween, which was my whole motivation.

However! Going to attend Comic Con 2010 in San Diego and me and a few friends are going to dress up. They are going as comic heroes, and Im going to be repping the 405th as an ODST. Instead of just doing the helmet, I am going all out. And since its not til next year, Im going to take my time. (part of the reason why I didnt make my deadline this time was SAT's for college and such)

But Im going all out and Im not going to back down because this will be my first time at a huge convention, and Im going to make sure its the best.

My friends have been going for the past 2 years and this time they want to go in costume so Im going to join them, as an ODST.

This thread will be dead, and Im probably not going to make another WIP thread considering how fail this one went. Just going to keep my friends updated on here ;)

Thanks for your time though.
