Well, this is my first post. I'm kindof disappointed that a project this great couldn't be posted in the Weapons and Props section, but oh well. Anyway, I'm bit into airsoft and absolutely LOVE the BR55 from Halo 3 (not so much from Halo 2). I got to looking around, and I noticed that the FAMAS and Battle Rifle are nearly identical in dimensions and general layout. So, I got to work with the Pepakura battle rifle.

The Battle Rifle after Pepakura. I had some trouble with some parts, so I said screw pepakura and eventually made some of the parts on my own.

After some fiberglass resin. I had to add cardboard supports along the length of the rifle to prevent wobble.

Now the Bondo. It's taking shape!

And finally, the Battle Rifle in it's current shape.

There is still plenty of work to be done, but it's coming along. The parts that you can see in the picture are a gearbox out of a Tokyo Marui FAMAS, the inner barrel from the FAMAS, and the outer barrel from a Classic Army Steyr AUG. The barrel seems to work perfectly, as the gas port and flash suppressor look very similar to the BR. I had to cut the supports and foregrip off of the barrel for the AUG in order to get it to look right. Also, the back of the stock on the BR had to be extended slightly, which I did with pieces of cardboard and more fiberglass, in order for the gearbox to have enough room to seat in. However, the width of the BR is PERFECT for the gearbox, and the magazine port lines up rather nicely with the feed unit after the stock was extended by about 1 1/2 inches. I also had to go back and fiberglass certain areas of the body (almost all of them, actually) because plain bondo and resin just wasn't sturdy enough. I am, after all, using this to play airsoft once I finish the ODST suit.

The gearbox seated in the back of the upper receiver.

A shot of the gearbox, inner barrel, and outer barrel fitted into the upper receiver. I plan on adding either fiberglass or sheet styrene supports to keep the barrel in place.

Battle Rifle Hotness!

I have yet to add in the trigger, the wiring, and connect the trigger to the gearbox. The battery will be held in the handguard up front. I'm going to have to run the wiring through the top of the weapon, down into the handguard.

Then, of course, I have some final detailing to do. (Okay, LOTS of final detailing to do.) But that's all for now.

Let me know what you all think so far! I'm eager to hear any advice or comments.

dont forget to make it fire proof cuz those motors get hot and resin is flameable

Spray some paint in it, that should keep the fumes from igniting.(Of course let it air out after)

Looking great I look forward to you finishing it :)

Thanks. I'll take that into mind. And yeah, the motors LOVE to get hot. I've had some overheating problems when I had my TM M733. Some other random ideas that I'm working on for the Battle Rifle:

The rail mount from my AUG is going to be mounted on the handle of the BR, on which I will have my Aimpoint COMP M3 scope.

I know someone has made a digital counter for the BR, and there is currently an electronic tri-burst kit for airsoft guns. I'm hoping to talk to an electrician to see if we can't make them work together so as the tri-burst kit counts out the rounds for a three-round burst, it makes the counter function, as well. The tri-burst kit is designed to detect the rise and fall in current of the circuit and, after three peaks, cut off power. Therefore, you have a three round burst.

Also, I need ideas on connecting the two halves of the weapon. I'm thinking on using a pin-system like on the AR-15 rifle, but I'm not sure how it's going to work out. I want it to be easy to disassemble, so if I have to perform maintenance on the gearbox, or such.

That's about it for now, although currently I am working on cutting the gearbox mounts out and the selector switch from the FAMAS. The mounts will hold the inner barrel in place and hold the hopup unit. Then the selector (to change from semi to auto) will hang down out of the back of the magazine port.

The AR-15 style pin mount works out pretty well, but each and ever niche on the upper and lower assemblies are aligned so they almost fit together without the pins. It wouldn't be too hard to just use two pins or bolts to hold the upper and lower together. The ARs are held in place via a little spring and another pin. (I'll post pics, if you'd like.) I'd recommend using your average bolt and nut seti[(one in the front and one in the back of the receiver... should allow for relatively easy mantenance. Hope I wasn't too vague..

Cheers!

hey, lookin' great! :)

you said you were looking for an ammo counter, there's a link under my signature :)

I hope this helped.

and best of luck :D

Yeah. I built an AR15 and i think I have a spare set of receiver and detent pins. I really like the idea of having my br be able to swivel apart like the ar, but I probably will end up merely using bolts and making some sort of plastic leafs coming out of the upper or lower to push the bolts through.

That is pretty cool, I was planning on doing something similar. You are always cooler when you show up to the field with a Halo related weapon.

That would work. In thinking a bit more about it, you'll have to be sure to strengthen that part of the br (primarily around the holes where the bolts enter.) Your solution should work out better than trying to make such annoying little holes in the br (for the pins+springs etc). (Plus, you won't have to deal with cramming the springs into the ar and hoping they don't shoot off into the stratosphere..... bad experience :lol))

Cheers!

Just wanna point out that you can buy an ammo counter set to 3-round burst. Just rig the switch behind the trigger, so it pulls both simultaneously.

As for the fire issue, cured polyurethane is pretty good about not burning. Especially so, if you glass it now. GRPs (Glass-reinforced Plastics) are incredibly fire and heat resistant, in general. I wouldn't worry too much about fires.

The rest of this, however, you seem to have well in-hand. Godspeed.
