I can confirm the sponge method does not work, with spray paint at least using the dark colours that I am. Maybe for a lighter secondary colour or even with acrylic paint. So ill try the paper method next
Hey Mike. A couple different ways that I found for the worn paint strip look that worked for me. . . .
1st way----- Tape off your stripe. Take some torn irregular shaped pieces of tape (blue painters tape works really well) and put them on the edges of your stripe or in the middle some where that you want it to be worn off. Paint the stripe. . . before it dries (may be a while in your cold weather ) peel off all the tape and take a wet cloth and rub out the edges of the worn spots so you don't have a solid straight line. Then you can black wash the edges to blend it a little better for final paint.
2nd way----- Kind of like vidofnir was saying. Except I use tape in place of the paper. Spray some paint on a piece of masking tape (but duct tape works a little better for certain things) and rub in your stripe instead of painting it in. This way works really good for a very large area. At least it does for me. I'm kind of partial to the 1st way though, because you can define the line that you want and where the worn off areas will be and just blend it all together.
Hope the helps. Keep up the good work and good luck with your color change. Kind of got used to seeing your camo pattern. Every time I saw it I knew immediately that it was yours. Kind of sad to see it go.
