Re: RobotChicken's Halo 3 Mk VI Master Chief, Ultra Detail, First Build WIP (many pic

I've decided I hate Blender with a fiery passion.
Really? I prefer Blender over the rest. Possibly because I've been using it for like 6 years on and off, but I just like it. My other top choices are C4D and 3DS Max.

I taught myself on Lightwave, it's where I have the most experience, though its been a long long time since I've used it.
I've used Rhino mostly to convert 3DS Max models to Nurbs so that I could bring them into SolidWorks.
I've seen Maya recommended multiple times and given the issues I've had with Blender, just importing and exporting files, I figured I'd try out another piece of software.

But lets not derail RobotChicken's thread, I would be glad to continue this conversation via PM.

Re: RobotChicken's Halo 3 Mk VI Master Chief, Ultra Detail, First Build WIP (many pic

I've finally got the most game accurate Mk VI forearm model unfolded, but we've decided to pep a prototype before uploading to see if any revisions should be made to the unfold. I'm going to start the pep tomorrow or Monday and will put up pics in a new thread over in the Pepakura forum. There are 144 parts in the unfold (yes, it's a very detailed model) but the parts count doesn't concern me any since the Cameo will be cutting out all 8 pages (because the file is also unfolded with no overlapping flaps for cutting on a Cameo). Except for answering any direct questions here, my next post will be in the new build thread.

Can you help but to not tease us! Man im excited to start seeing both your threads updating again. Are you two still planing on releasing packs with test peps and several versions of difficulty?

Re: RobotChicken's Halo 3 Mk VI Master Chief, Ultra Detail, First Build WIP (many pic

I was hoping Art Andrews might create a new folder in the MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor - Mark VI area of the file archive where all our Ultimate Detail files could be placed separate from all the legacy files. I'm very sure SirPalesAlot will be making tester versions of the files, and I believe the previously-released forearm tester is still valid with this new model. Initially I'm planning Cameo unfolds for only the files being used for my own builds (Mk VI Master Chief and Covenant Hunter) but might expand on that in the future. So you want to be teased, huh? ;) Take a look at this...

RobotChicken, reach out to rundown. He has been curating the current File Archive. He would have a better idea of how this fits into our current file structure than I do.

Well, i would prefer to just add them to the mkvi section. There are already high poly and low poly pep models in there. Just give them a prefix like the rest of the files and it would fit right in ;)

Well, in the 4shared database managed by MissingSpartan7 at least the HD files were in a separate folder from the rest of the files, making it much easier to browse the high-detail files than rummaging through a long list of files. Even the prior old wiki had the HD files in a separate category. In my opinion, it would be beneficial to organize the files into separate categories for each armor set (when the armor set contains models of different build levels) for beginners (ND = normal detail), intermediate (MD = medium detail), experienced (HD = high detail), and insane (UD = ultimate detail). Neither SirPalesAlot or myself care to have the master builder files lumped in with the legacy forerunner files and thus more likely to upload them to an independent 4shared database than to the 405th file archive.

I'll add some new subsections. What is one more click anyway.

EDIT: Added the necessary subsections.

Looks really good - Thanks, rundown! I'll add Cameo-compatible unfolds to the applicable folders as I get each one done.

I was able to condense the 8 forearm pages down to 7 pages after sizing for my kid's build and got all 7 pages scored and cut in about a half hour. It's so cool...

I hope we end up seeing something like this for Halo Reach too!!! :)
LD, MD, HD, UHD, and Game Ripped would be awesome!

Re: RobotChicken's Halo 3 Mk VI Master Chief, Ultra Detail, First Build WIP (many pic

Hmmm, well my daughter has been asking me for her own purple master chief suit, now that she's seeing our Pepakura pieces getting put together. Maybe a ultra high detail mini master chief might be in order... You know since the files will be so easy to access now.

Honestly I just think seeing a little 4 foot purple chief running around would be super awesome.

Love this thread... dude your work is ACE!!!!
Thanks!

The plan here is for my 4 1/2 foot green Master Chief being "escorted" (hehe) by a 5 1/2 foot hunter. (It's okay, he'll respawn....)

I'll add some new subsections. What is one more click anyway.

EDIT: Added the necessary subsections.

rundown, I have some questions about adding files to the archive. I noticed some "files" are actually groups of files (http://www.405th.com/file-archive.php?do=download&downloadid=36 for example has a jpg and a pdo). Does this imply a "file" in the database can be comprised of multiple files, or is the first file always present as simply the thumbnail image? Can a file have multiple thumbnails, for showing say a front view and a back view of the model? Can the thumbnails be clickable to show a larger view (as at http://www.405th.com/showthread.php/40704-RobotChicken’s-Mjolnir-Mk-VI-Forearm-Armor-Detail-Parts)?

I'm asking because all the new Mk VI forearm models (ND, MD, HD, UD, and 3D) by SirPalesAlot and I use the same size tester model. We'd like to include the tester model with each of the base models, but it would be redundant to upload the same tester file into each of the subsections. Would it be possible to upload a shared tester file to just one of the subsections and then simply include a link to it in the other subsections? Alternatively, maybe each base model could be coupled with its size tester in a zip file which is then uploaded to the archive? Or do you have another way tester models could be associated with their intended base file(s)? Thanks!

If you upload something you can keep selecting multiple files, so you won't really need to zip anything. It will become a list of links like in the example you showed.
You can only give it 1 thumbnail. So we'd like to have for example left and recht shins together with their sizetesters in one upload. This way you can actually see what you are downloading, instead of looking through a list what part you need.

I noticed you can have multiple screenshots within the file, so you could ad some screenshots of the testers if you wanted.

Re: RobotChicken's Halo 3 Mk VI Master Chief, Ultra Detail, First Build WIP (many pic

This build is sick. You sir have an insane amount of patience that I lack. Will be watching this build!

Re: RobotChicken's Halo 3 Mk VI Master Chief, Ultra Detail, First Build WIP (many pic

This just keeps getting cooler all the time. Amazing work!

Re: RobotChicken's Halo 3 Mk VI Master Chief, Ultra Detail, First Build WIP (many pic

Thanks everyone. It was just over a year ago when I hadn't even heard of "Pepakura" before. There are builds here on the 405th that inspire me as well and I look at them thinking, "man I hope my build turns out half as good as theirs". I'm currently pepping the prototype for forearm models to be uploaded to the 405th File Archive. I want to complete the pep before uploading because I'm adjusting the unfold and flap placement as I assemble the parts. (Things that looked good on screen don't always work out as well on actual cardstock parts.) The pep is going quick having all the parts scored and cut in advance with the Cameo. (It took about 20 minutes to score and cut 144 parts on 7 pages.) I'm up to page 4 with the gluing. It's very nice not needing to pause assembly to score and cut the next part with a homicidal psycho X-acto knife. When another part is needed for gluing, I just reach over and lift it from its cutting mat. Photos for this build will be posted in a new thread, starting after the right forearm is pepped.

Edit: I've decided to keep this thread going instead of starting a new one, so photos of the new forearm pep will be showing up here once I'm far enough along to post reasonable progress. Thanks Art for moving the thread!

Re: RobotChicken's Halo 3 Mk VI Master Chief, Ultra Detail, First Build WIP (many pic

As you know, I'm pepping the new Ultra-High Detail forearm model to refine its unfold, and it's time to put up the first few photos. There's not a lot to show just yet since I'm still finishing up the first subassemblies, but I realize people might be wanting to see how it's looking.

Someone's likely to ask something like, "holy crap, how did you build something so small?!?", so I'll start out again with my tools-of-the-trade:
Forearms18.jpg

 • Silhouette Spatula for removing parts from the cutting mat.
 • Tweezers for handling small parts (which are assembled under a magnifying lamp).
 • Plain ole white glue (School Glue in this photo, but any will work). Some people like hot glue, but it can burn fingertips and can create much grief when smoothing out hardened parts later. Other people like superglue, but I like the ability to slide parts around into position before the glue sets up. Ergo, white glue.
 • Wooden toothpick for applying glue to flaps and smoothing it to a thin film.
 • Metal Straightedge to fold cardstock against for achieving straight, flat folds.
 • Lucky penny (optional) Nah, it's just there for a scale reference so you can appreciate the size I'm pepping at.

(Notice there are no Edge IDs and no printed lines whatsoever on the parts. I'm not insane, my mother had me tested...)

(In a Steve Martin voice) "Let's get small..."
This is the start of new interior detailing at the wrist opening:
Forearms19a.jpg

Tweezers and clothespin are used to clamp the flap in place while the glue sets. My fingers are too big to handle tiny parts, and I've got other parts to assemble while glue sets on each edge so I clamp them and move on. (But wait, the parts get even smaller yet...)

Here is the top face of the finished wrist detail:
Forearms19b.jpg

And here is the full wrist detail added to a lower forearm subassembly:

Elbow subassembly:

Thanks for looking, and more photos to follow...
