really liking this whole 1 piece design.

Quick question. A good bit of people have to cut the bottom portion of the back of the helm off in order to fit the helmet over their heads. With this being a all together pep file.. has it been modified any to solve the issue of people having to hinge the back of the helmet for fitment concerns?

It had not been modified to fit someone's head without cutting the back. However, the faceplate and chin pieces are separate, so you should be able to get into the helmet that way if you have to during the pep stage and don't want to cut the back.

UPDATE: I have been looking at the chin of the model and something just seemed off. I think the chin stuck out too much. I tried this:

Here's a shot of the Mark II that gives you an idea of the shape. I can't seem to find a really good picture of the side of the helmet where the chin isn't in some weird lighting.

Which one do you think is better. I'm just trying to figure out whether or not I should re-do the unfold and everything. If so, then I'm going to throw in the fix to the shape of the middle trapezoid piece that's beveled on the back.

Here's a reference for that...

it looks better with the shorter chin imo. Are you going to make a version with that adjustment? If so, I will wait for that one

Make the changes Samuray. those alterations will make it much more accurate, which is a good thing. Also why not include the ear detail template.

Hell, why not a template also on where all the screws and lines are ment to go (those details that are usually missing from Helms)

+1 Vote for the shorter chin.. It does look more accurate, though both models still look very nice in my opinion!

I'm working on the unfold of the smaller chin now. Should be up tonight or tomorrow for any interested parties.

Will your unfold have the pieces to block off the eyes, & etc?? For people wanting to MOLD thier pieces? Def the shorter chin, if you could put the lines and details it'd be nice but not needed!! If you make this the most accurate helm I will mold it and use it!!

I concure with MXracer, with the lines and details this would be the final nail in me ditching my current 2/3rds done and going with yours. already this is looking stellar dude

Alright. I finished the unfold. I did not add a stencil for the detail lines (other than for the ears). Smaller chin file is now in the 1st post.

@MXRacer476: Yes. Both versions of the helmet that I've posted have pieces to block off the eyes, between the faceplate and jaw, and the back is all one piece.

well sadly the site went done, and I really wanna get the helm wearable for friday night. I am not the greatest pep'er by any means, but here is your model. Thanks, it was much easier to put together. I'm kinda slow at these things and it took me about 8-10 hours to get it done through the pep phase.

again, thanks a million. I might re-do your shorter chin version, but not for a long while haha

I'm glad that it went together so well. Here's hoping you can get it all done by Friday!

Thanks Samurary.. can't wait to build this helmet.. Very accurate.

Feel free to post pictures of it when it's done or link to your own thread.

Here's what I've been working on for a few weeks (on and off). There were a few things that I noticed people said that needed to be changed on Dungbeetle's helmet even though we all know it's probably one of the best pepakura files out there. So, I decided to take a whack at it. Here're the changes I made.

- Smaller forehead.

- Braces between the jaw and the faceplate and also on the eyes.

- Connected the neck pieces together on the back.

- Added more neck under the ear pieces.

Here's what I came up with. I used MrOreo's unfold of the Dungbeetle's original helmet as a basis for my unfold.

First some comparisons:

...And here's the file...

And if you need some stencils for the ear pieces, I got ya covered...

EDIT: Iron Mang has shown some concern with the fact that my helmet is missing the top most beveled trapezoid from the back of the helmet. I am aware that part exists in the movie, but I felt that it'd be easier to make this part after bondoing. This is because it's about the same depth as the other detail lines on the helmet. Otherwise, you'd either have to build up a piece that was deeper than the movie version or pep a piece that's so skinny that most people would end up messing up the piece anyway.

EDIT: Also, if you're really concerned with making sure the pepped model has the beveled piece, you could always put a piece of cardboard down around the edge of the trapezoid before you put the piece down that goes in the middle. That's one of the reasons I made the unfold the way that I did (with the trapezoid separate). I did the same thing with the gold part on the chin where it was originally raised in dungbeetle's model since, in the movie, it's more of a small groove.

SUPER EDIT:

FINISHED THE SMALLER CHIN MODEL THAT ALSO FIXED THE BACK OF THE HELMET.

No offense (!) but,

seeing we're all some sort of nutter :D (admit it !)

Are there other people looking in to the available files for the rest of the suit?

I guess the regular neck (for starters) now isn't accurate enough anymore?!

@ Samuray

how did you alter dung_beetle's file?

I have a reasonable collection of pep files but want to tweak here and there.

I have no idea what's being asked here.

In pepakura designer you can go to File->Export and choose to export it to an obj. From there you can import it into something like blender. I would ask the permission of the original artist before you release anything, though.

umm, i found a flaw in your smaller chin, when you made it smaller, the lower part of the faceplate became flat heres a pic to chow what i mean

comparison.jpg

see? compared to dungbeetles, the mouth piece is flat with the jaw.
