Stiilus' Armour & Weapon Builds (PIC HEAVY)

So I remodelled the jawline last night. And of course added a little more detail in the process. It'll make it just a little more challenging to pep, but what the hey, why bother making something if there isn't going to be any challenge to it, right?

GRDnewjaw_zps02c4597c.png

Anyway, more pics soon. I should have the jaw added to the helmet tonight, and maybe even start connecting the eye piece too, if not, there is always tomorrow :D ...

this is too cool, cant wait to see how it turns out! :D

thanks Alfrey515. i wanted to build something nobody had done before, and everytime i looked at the GRD helmet i just wanted one more. i finally finished off the modelling late last night, with a little tweaking early this morning, and i think that i've got it to a point where i'm happy with it.

i thought doing the "ears" and rebreather vents that run up the side was a real pain to join to the bulk of the helmet. i was so wrong. the eye piece. that was a real drag. i enjoyed it, but just trying to keep the original shape underneath while connecting it to the visor without distorting either of them too much, that was nice little challenge.

that being said, i'm glad to have taken on a new skill set, especially when i can combine it with a hobby i enjoy, and who knows where it'll take me in the future :D ...

This is incredibly well done. I'm sitting here looking at my helmet, thinking I might have to re-work the paint situation.

Very impressive, especially the freehand work. My hat is off to you, sir.

thanks daviduffy. admittedly there was some stencilling involved, but when i removed the overlay, the resulting finish was less than stellar, so i ended up redoing some of the paint work by hand anyway. i guess it depends on how steady my hand is on any particular day :) ...

Hey hey all. Just a quick screen grab of the unfold. I finished it off this morning, a grand total of 28 pages and 188 pieces. I did the prefilter across 2 separate pages at the bottom for anyone who would like to build those parts in paper as well, but in my honest opinion, it would be easier to make them out of MDF (craftboard) or the like. At any rate, making the little cannister in the prefilter by hand will give me another excuse to crack out the wood lathe again :D ...

fullunfold_zpsad8b548f.png

Over all, I'm pretty chuffed with the way the unfold turned out, it only took about a day to make sure that all the parts would fit on an A4 page (I'm in Australia, so I made it to Aussie page standards. Many apologies for other paper formats), and rearrange them in corresponding groups (for conservation of paper though, there are some small pieces placed on pages where there was room to put them rather than create a new page just to keep the parts grouped).

I need to do a thorough clean up at my place though, chuck crap out I no longer need and just generally tidy up, so I probably won't be able to start the pep for this until (maybe) next weekend :( ...

So that's about it for now, more updates soon when the build begins :D ...

*whistles* thats a pretty sweet looking helm. Cant wait to see some build pics :)

Damnit!!!

Ok, you're all not gonna believe this, that's a grand total of two times I've lost data related to my builds. My external HDD crashed. And you guessed it, the only copy of my GRD helmet file was on it.

I'm gonna have to redo it, but seeing as I've just moved it'll have to wait for a bit. On the up side, at least I now have the experience to do a really decent model. If I hadn't lost the file then I guess there would have been the single standard edition to it. Now I'm gonna add all the extra stuff I learnt in the last few months to the model, then upload to somewhere else remote before I release it for everyone else. Sorry, I'm still gonna be a little greedy with it until I've done my build first. :D

Hopefully I get some time to work on it soon :D .

Awwwww maaaaaan :-( Sorry to hear about the external crashing man. But on the brightside like you said, you have learned a lot and can always redo it :)
I look forward to the new and improved version lol

Thanks for the sympathy. Hopefully I'll have it up soon. I have put a texture on it for god measure, just to see if I could really more than anything else. This really sucks at the moment, I've had to resort to using my phone for internet when I'm in town at the moment. Any prospective builders in this hobby who like having phone coverage or even the basic pleasure of the internet at their finger tips should NOT move to the crappy little town of Murringo. I think there are pit toilets along lonely highways in some random place (lets say somewhere in the middle of some desert somewhere just for arguements sake) have more things going for them. I really can't wait til I'm back home in queensland. Anyway, I'll be putting a link up here soon for a helmet file I noticed wasn't in the repository, and a new high def file for a weapon in my weapons build shortly afterwards, so please stay tuned everyone, I haven't disappeared completely :D

Dude this needs to be in the elite section I've seen a few helmets so far and this one is one of the best threads with helmets! Next to yours idk I if I should call mine a helmet XD btw I'm lookin toward to seeing how tht GRD will turn out :) best of luck

Thanks Chainsaw ninja. I'm flattered. Hopefully work will begin again soon on the GRD file. I've just been so busy lately that i just haven't had time to work on it.

Meanwhile, I did get to finish this a while back, but just couldn't find a cheap enough wifi to upload it.

And of course, this is where I got my source material from...

Mkivtcp_zpsf1314086.jpg

If you want a crack at building it, you can grab it from here: http://www.4shared.com/file/bzYvR2IT/MkIV__GT__Final.html?

Hope you have fun with the build :D !!!

I wish I had seen this earlier but my god the detail you put in not only to your models but your digital too. I think your EVA visor alone is impressive. How did you do it because Ive been wanting to do that for my next helmet but dont know where to start visor wise.

For the longest time i've been promising to put up a tut/breakdown of how i made it. I really should get round to it one day. The lower jawline is just a basic regular motorcycle helmet, held in place using the same method i explain in my Mk V (using bolts and screw inserts), while the curve of the dome is a bubble visor, glued in place with a super fast drying black silicone adhesive. The top of the visor is actually two regular motorcycle visors, one glued on from the outside (which i could have screwed also if i had thought that step through a bit more) over the top of the dome of the pep visor, and then another layer glued down over that made from the remaining visor. I wish that i had been able to find them all in a gold colour, but i think the rainbow finish looks just as well as i had imagined that it would if it were gold anyway. :D . As soon as I get a chance to take some photos and run them through Adobe, I'll get them online. Sadly with my current wifi setup, that might be a while down the track. In the meantime, if you do need a more in depth explanation, just drop me a line, I'd love to help. Best of luck with the build :D ...

I know, I know... It's been quite some time since I posted anything on here. I've moved, I've been setting up workspaces, been over loaded at work, establishing a new yard at home and generally having all my time eaten up by everyone else's demands. And so now I'm necroposting in my own thread.

For a good reason mind you. I should have started posting progress pics a few months back as I started this project earlier in the year.

I'd decided to finally bite the bullet and get started on a full suit build as opposed to just bandying about with weapons and helmets. There is a parade in the nearby township of Young called the Cherry Festival for which I'm hoping to have the suit completed by so i can get around with a friend who is also trying to complete a Fallout 4 power suit for the same festival.

I'm going with a classic MkV Reach suit. I had to make a wider chest to accommodate sticking my head through the neck and because my shoulders aren't exactly narrow. It's based off the Bungie chest but with lots of the details smoothed out as they will be carved in with my Dremel.

I've changed the chest a bit since this stage. More details on that in the next post.

DOUBLE POST!!!! If you're lucky you might even get a triple post...

Anyway, so I coated the inside if the chest with my friends very own special blend of "Rondo". Once there was a few coats on the inside i began sanding back and adding in some details.

WP_20160222_10_29_44_Pro_zpsbofdl8yz.jpg

WP_20160222_10_29_40_Pro_zpswobgcpdh.jpg

I know there are quite a few little dimples in the surface here. Most of them are sanded out now and the surface is looking quite smooth...

WP_20160222_10_29_35_Pro_zps00m1zkvy.jpg

I wasn't happy with how warped the front and top of the chest was looking so i added a sheet of 3mm MDF to the parts that were affected by the warpage the most, ten back filled to allow for the step from the pep at the edges of the MDF.

Before anyone comments that the hip sticks out a little more on the right side...I'm an odd shape, I mean, I'm not hideously deformed or anything, and it's really nothing that people wouldn't notice unless they were looking at me naked, but I'm trying to attract people to this thread to show them my work, not scare them away, so there will be no body shots going on here. Naked or otherwise...

WP_20160213_16_42_27_Pro_zpsgsm2ustw.jpg

Yeah, that looks really messy here, but anyone who's done a build or watched someone else do one knows that it's all a work in progress.

There's that wide hip again.

WP_20160213_16_41_55_Pro_zpsbq7eo0vp.jpg

So no second prizes for guessing what helmet I've decided to go with... I've always liked the CQB. It was my helmet of choice in Halo 3 and even more so with Reach. Even after I'd unlocked tonnes of other helmets I would always still want to go back to my CQB...

OMG!!! TRIPLE POST!!! By now you've probably figured I'm poking fun at those that don't like posts immediately after another by the same person. Meh, you'll get over it.

So I'm using some standard strap hinges and turning them into "parliament hinges". You'll see what i mean when I do it... Zinc plated to resist rust, but what about plasma scorching from Covenant weapons?

Viola! Parliament hinges on demand! I'm using these to hinge the top half of the chest to allow for easier putting on and taking off of the armour.

It's gonna make more sense when I explain why I had to bend them like this when i show them in place...
