good question , i think he does it in one piece but i will like to know

TorsoFairing023.jpg

From the looks of it, it looked like he did the torso as 1 piece. On post #143 he does say that he cut it with a saw and dremel though!

Hope that helps.

Ok, I dont mean to be rude either, but finnish that was kind of harsh it looks Awsome! And as far as I remember, you put a litle bit of clay over a legendary helmet, asked how much you would get for it, started more topics than nessescary, and then gave up?

Great work therossil!

I didnt quit with the helmet... i will just need to get the silicone and then it's finished... what did i comment i dont remeber let me check...
this looks awesome so it must have been a mistake if i said something bad about it...

-Fin(n)ish

EDIT: oh it was this what i said: "LMAO the helmet looks bigger then the torso (no offense)" i actually mean no offense it looks so freakin awesome, what i meant to say it just looked a bit funny when looked from the side (the scale from the side) there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. and i actually meant the 'no offense'.

sorry for confusing you guys.

Up until recently I've been using urethane casting resin from a local outfit called TAP Plastics.

Since then I've been using resin I got from jgreer.com . It's less expensive and it seems to be working out fairly well. I pour the first layer or two with microballoons added in to make it easier to sand. After that I add in milled glassfiber to add strength. This is the same way that I pour the helmet castings and so far they are all pretty tough and reasonably lightweight.

In other news, the boots are coming together:

Bootsinglass001.jpg

The toe and ankle strap are symmetrical for the left and right boots. The only difference (for the hard parts) is in the heel cup, so I had to make a left and right version of those. Now I have to pour a few layers of resin inside and start fairing and smoothing them. I'll be doing some shaping on the chest armor today as well.

I still need money to pay for sticky goo so I can go forward with this project. If you're on the fence about buying one of my helmet castings, now would be a great time to go ahead and pick one up. You can get more details in my classified thread. PM for price and Paypal info.

Thanks for pointing that out. I thought I'd already covered that part. It's also worth mentioning that I got the moldmaking silicone RTV rubber from TAP plastics and the mother mold was made using whatever random polyester fiberglass resin I had on hand. I think I actually got the fiberglass resin from an auto parts store, but I've got so much of that junk around that I don't tend to keep track. The fiberglass matt was leftover from a boat repair project of some sort, but you can get that at your local Home Depot.

For my next mold I'll be using silicone from www.jgreer.com because even with shipping it still works out to be the best price.

Hopefully this is helpful.

I've read through this thread so i'm hoping to avoid asking a question someone else might have but here goes: what brand visor did you use and how did you install it? I'm trying to get an idea what brand visors tend to fit the best/are most popular and the most common installation method as I tackle my own helmet visor. Thanks!

So far I have yet to decide on the final design for my visor installation. The one I installed in the master before I did the molding was a gold HJC visor that I picked up from www.kneedraggers.com. It was only taped in place so I could get the pictures. Then I removed it and fixed in a plain smoked HJC visor (from the same source) using epoxy for strength and a lot of glazing and spot putty to fill the seams.

So far I haven't installed the visor in any of my castings. I've been working on other parts of the armor instead.

Hopefully this helps.

What did you use when you painted it red and it became shiney, i believe i heard primer thrown around but could you be specific with brand and stuff? I really liked that finish!

The only reason it looked shiny was because the primer was still wet. When it dried it came out a very dull rust color. I'm not sure what brand of primer that was. I have a handful of different rattle cans in the shop and I wasn't paying close enough attention. The only reason it was reddish was because the previous coat was not and I wanted to be able to ensure complete coverage. This was also only the primer I used for the mold master. When I start painting my castings, I will be using an epoxy-based automotive primer before I paint them.

I'm sorry I don't have any more details for you.

Any updates?

Not too much to mention. I was in the shop last night doing some more smoothing on the torso armor. Over the past week of being stuck in the hotel room I made some more Pepakura models. I will be in the shop today doing some more smoothing and adding some details on the torso. I should be making the mold by Wednesday. I'll post pics when I have them.

Looking back through the thread, I just noticed that I hadn't posted the latest pics.

Right before I left for the week I sprayed my first coat of primer on the parts I was working on. Here's what I had before last night's work:

Again, there are a lot more details I need to sort out and some shaping left to do on the torso.

The boots are entirely too small for me, but I've already made the Pep models for the next size up. More on that later.
