Im currently working on a Pulse rifle with working ammo counter based on an Arduino:

hey man, i know your making one, i've been reading your thread =P i like your idea, i love the Aliens movie, and i love the pulse rifle =]

just a little update, i loaded up halo 3, and measured the time it took to fire an entire magazine, not counting reload time. Takes 3.15 seconds to waste a mag with it. So i'm going to make my counter go down at that rate while i'm holding down the button/trigger.
