After hearing about Coraline I decided to rent it awhile ago. Since I am gonna be at Dragon Con again this year I figured the movie might have some good costume ideas...Boy was I right. Wybie's first appearance in the movie has him clad in a black raincoat, while wearing a welder's mask with a skull painted on it, with 3 night vision-y scope-y stuff.

I am nearly completed with the costume, no full pictures yet, but what I do have is a picture of an almost completed Skull Helmet...

Would you believe me if I said the three green things were PVC pipes painted black? Well they are...

The helmet was relatively easy to find, just found a Pyramex Welder's Helmet from Amazon.com *cough*for15bucksUSD*cough*. The rest of the stuff was modifying it to work right.

Can't forget the awesome skull paint job my sister, Sam, did for me.

EDIT: Picture of the finished costume!

woah :psuper cool! how long did it take you?

A couple of days, to a week. Actual construction time was a few days, but waiting for all the costume parts to be shipped was about 2 weeks.

Looks really great man. It's amazing the quality you pulled together with this scratch build. I just got 2 questions. How's the visibility and are you going to add the big crank on the side?

EDIT: isn't his name Whyme (as a joke in the movie "why me" to what his mother said)?

Actually his name is Wybie, short for Whyborn, as in "Why were you born?" as Coraline said.

To answer your two questions...

1. It's decent. Since there is a circuit board in the round thing I cannot actually see out of the lit lenses, however we did use some tint and I can see out of the right sides of the square area on the mask pretty well.

2. Yes we are adding the crank. The helmet was almost finished and I was gonna wait till I had it on the side but I figured why not now?

I gotta say, that is pretty fantastic. My wife and I are big fans of Coraline, saw it twice in the theater. This is going to make for an excellent costume.

Can't wait to see it at D*con. look forward to it. Good job!

My friend is gonna be going as 'The Other Mother' so we'll have to keep an eye out for you... :)

As long as your friend doesn't have any sentient spider claw hands to come after me, I think I'll be fine. :D

Bump for update, Costume is finished! Dad just needs to shorten the wires for the lights but other than that it's done.

Here's a teaser of the full thing, which I will have photos of today, after I visit my sister.

Really looking forward to wearing it at Dragon Con, since we're leaving tomorrow to travel 2 hours to Atlanta.

Niiice... Looks spot on! I'll see you at Dcon. If you see a guy in half-assed Fallout 3 Enclave Armor(I didn't quite finish it all in time), say hi!

All I'm gonna say is this, you'd better see Malcolm McD at the autograph section in that, he was President John Henry Eden after all.
