Aqua Resin, Non-toxic Resin

Thanks for taking lead on this Skullcandy and getting ahold of the materials. My trial kit should be arriving over the weekend so I'll do my best to get my results up soon. I may not have time to work with it though until early next week due to having a friend visit over the weekend, but like I said I want to get at it as soon as possible.

I'd like to put together some Pep helmets to try this stuff out on, as well as cast it in my molds. Then I can do testing on the sanding properties, and flexibility... even impact resistance.

I realized after putting up my post yesterday that there were some crucial questions I forgot to ask such as working time, curing, and the additives. I figure that my kit will be here soon enough and I'll get back to their rep with the results and a second round of questions for them.

I don't see anything wrong with individuals calling them up and asking questions, but I worry that they may get irritated if they have to handle the same set of questions and explanations of what we intend to do with their resin seperately. Remeber that you can call your local distributors for info as well. I'll do my best to get ALL the questions answered in my testing process and put together a very comprehensive tutorial about this stuff so we don't have to all contact them seperately. Also remember that once we've made up our minds I should be able to make bulk orders for us and recieve a decent discount for the 405th members. I'd be willing to re-distribute the materials to everyone when the order comes in, but of course we'll have to see it we get that far.

Skullcandy feel free to play around with the aquaresin and give us the first heads up. I appologise that I won't be able to start testing until early next week.

Sean how dare you have a life :p I'm happy to help too :) My tests will be simple, so I doubt I'll cover half the stuff you will since I have WAY less experience. I'm probably going to test plain, unfolded cardstock at first and maybe I'll use the pieces from my messed up FS helmet to see how it effects more complex stuff, haha that's all I can think of. Maybe what the resin could do to unsealed cardstock and what it does to sealed cardstock. I'll see what things I can mess up, I mean come up with. I'd throw up if I killed the FS helmet... I don't want to have to make another one XD

Yay for the Guinea Pigs :D

I better get cracking on some pep models... I've got a few things in mind, but I'll test them tenuously as to not destroy anything.. Work in small batches, a little at a time, and be patient while waiting between coats... I guess thats my best advise for you.

Let us know how it goes, I'll be "guinea piggin" in a few days too.

OKie doke Sean, thanks for the tips. I picked up a measuring cup and a 1/8 cup scoop so I can make small batches :) Hopefully I'll get some results tonight, maybe see how long the curing is :D If get some results I ca nput to good use I may resin a handplate this weekend, that way IF something happens I won't be so upset XD

i love you guys! if i lived near a store that sold it, id buy it in a heart beat. can wait for the results.

ha ha yea same here, my friends keep bothering me to leave my house......never! atleast not until i finish the spiker!

Hey Skullcandy and Sean,

You already mentioned this possibility in an earlier post... but could either of you please test to see if you can get it to a mudlike or bondo consistency and how easily it sands? What am I asking for? You probably already planned to do that anyway. :p

Let us know all the details. If this stuff works out, I might be converted.

Sounds interesting. Wonder if there's a supplier in Australia. Wasn't too thrilled at the idea of having to play with toxic stuff to make my armour.

*Update* 02/03/08 6PM EST
I just sealed my helmet with the Clear Coat from Krylon.

A few notes:

THE In and outside of the helmet must be well coated at least once.
In my case, I recommend at the very least reinforcing some if not all of the helmet with AOB Frost's hot glue method. Why you ask? THe Krylon may weaken your glue and it can make the resin a little bit heavier if it gets damp. I used a dry mouting, rubber cement technique, which since I'm a bit noobish at super hard Pepakura, I needed room to make fold corrections. This is where one step may be added.

If you only use the supports, meaning no visor, the supports will get in the way when you need to coat the inside of the helmet(This applies to FS helmet using the struts, the Pepakura I used didn't have the visor in the file, so that's my fault). So after spraying while it's still dampish, the card stock will be a bit flimsy, I recommend putting this thing on a roll of paper towels(not brand new, it'll warp some parts) or some kind of taller object that'll suspend the helmet. Once it dries it will regain most of its rigidness, but you may notice some weakened areas.
This stuff dries with a bit of a texture, you can feel it and see the difference.

Early Aqua Resin test phase 02/03/08 10PM

Right now I"m testing the curing time on coated and uncoated reminants of an old helmet. The mix seems to be a bit grainy, as long as I mixed it well enough. As far as I can tell, the uncoated piece is pretty much annihilated by warpage. The mix is also a light eggshellish color when mixed and it pretty much odorless.

Uncoated helmet with heavy application, not advised, this scrap got nintendowed. Cure time was about 90 minutes XD

So here are some of the first round of resin, seams only, and it looks like this stuff can be sanded, but I'm not doing that until I have all the smoothing resin applied.

The cure time was FAST under 30 minutes for seaming since it was a thin coat.
The actual batch did not start to set until I let it stand unagitated for 5 minutes, so you don't have ot rush when you are seaming, you just have to make sure to agitate it somehow. I also used disposable cups for my mix and it actually worked out fine and it mixes easy too :D

I also know my helmet has some holes in it and it isn't as pretty as a lot of the more experienced peoples, I'm fixing these later, so nyeh :p

So, for me, I think so far this is a HUGE success :)

Mistakes? What mistakes? ;)

Seriously, what you call "mistakes" can be easily fixed. So, there's really nothing to worry about there.

I'd tend to agree you've made a good deal of progress on this so far. And here I'd just posted a comment in your profile earlier this evening asking how your armour was coming along, LOL.

Although I myself have never used the resin/fiberglass method for my own MJOLNIR armour, I can definately see the benefits to using a compound like this with non-toxic fumes.

Of course, toxic or not, it would probably still be advisable to wear a mask when doing this so as not to get too loopy, LOL.

Good work so far, SC Girl! I look forward to further progress! :D

Actually that is looking nice...looks like the seems are very sealed!!

I have 1 question though?? I was wondering what were you using to hold up your helmet...I could be wrong but is that YOU under the plastic covering??

Keep up the good work and hope this helmet comes out to be your final helmet!!

Ok so basically this stuff works, but first you need to use:

1. Frosts hot glue method
2. Spray inside and out with a coat of Krylon to seal
3. Then resin inside and out

If you skip the Krylon it will warp out of control. Did I follow that right?
