I noticed you talked about temperature for a great deal so I have this one question for someone, if I'm working in SoCal during the summer (80+ highs), temperature should not be a big problem for me correct? This is more of a worry for Mid West people during the winter.

EDIT: BTW, Cereal the video is fantastic, can't wait for more!

great first vid sir. youve already helped me. ive always tried to resin my helmets all in one go. thank you for your advise! looking forward to much more

That's great to hear! Glad I could help.

Great tutorial video and update! Cant wait to see your continued work and future uploads...I do have a side question about your video on resin. Doesn't fiberglass resin not stick to each-other if you do layers at different times due to the smooth surface? So is there a possibility of chipping off the second layer of resin? The only resin work I have done is with two parts plastic resin that said it doesn't matter if done in layers, but in some spots it didn't bond to the first layer very well...Keep up to good work!

Fiberglass "will" absolutely stick to itself even if done in separate coats. If there are areas that do not stick or chip off, that means that the surface was not clean or had an oily residue on it.

In Cali the ambient is not too much a concern. As long as the coat of resin you apply is thick enough (not too thick tho) it will cure just fine. Also, placing the item in the sun will help it along also.

Chest width, height, depth...
Doesn't matter, when you adjust one number the associated other two dimensions will auto adjust to conform to the new measure.
I used height for the helmet and chest because they are the most consistent measurable areas for that specific piece.

Looking sweet. Love the vid also.

Thanks thorn,
Very happy that everyone has liked and or gained something from the video so far!

Dave.

Yeah thats the great thing about designer :)
Ok was just curious lol.

First let me say great tut and incredible work. I am getting ready to rondo my first helmet and am keeping it stock so as not to overwhelm myself to start. I know this is completely off topic but I figured you are knowledgable enough to help me out, and for some reason I can't start a new thread. Have you ever thought about scaling a helmet to have it fit over a motorcycle helmet? I was thinking of taking an open faced helmet and building the helmet around it. Possibly 2 piecing the helmet and then combining them on/around the helmet. My concerns are that I don't want to look like a bobblehead. I am afraid that I would have to scale up so much that it would look rediculous. Do you think it would be a possibility of should I do like the other people on youtube and buy a haloween mask and cut and glue it. Also screwing into ot breaking the shell of the helmet renders it useless in the eyes of the DOT and the guys with the whirley red and blue lights. Thanks for your input and opinion.

Well... first off, Welcome to the 405th!
As far as posting a thread goes, I believe you can only post in the noob section until your posts / time on the forum increases.
Congrats, on starting out a helmet build! As far as building a MC helmet to fit over a motorcycle helm.... That would be quite huge and yes would look like a bobble head! Even if you were to make attachments to an existing DOT approved helm, it would be Gi-normus! Secondly... I would advise against attaching, screwing, drilling or modifying the shell of a helmet in any way as it "WILL" compromise it's structural integrity and is a ticketable offense. Then take that stuff seriously, eg: as per safety law. If a helmet is dropped from a height greater than 36" just once, it is deemed to be "unsafe"

I love the idea, but... in the end I believe it would be unsafe and would look crazy big too.

UPDATE!

Alright, got some more work done. Rondo coated the inside of the chest piece, and cut it in half with no incident!

Here is where I split the chest piece:

And finally, just to see how it fits...

Overall, I think it fits well, it does need some tweaking, but nothing too major.

Here is the next installment in my video series, as promised!

Making Master Chief: Episode 02 - Rondo'ing Your Armour & Cutting A Chest Plate! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwWT_I6WBqs&feature=relmfu

As usual... questions/comments/crits' always welcome!

Thank you for that great video! And you understand the limitations of rondo!

But more than anything, I really appreciate you turning down your music. Most of the armor videos on youtube have music blaring louder than the guy speaking. A well done, in depth video, I only hope people will take the time to watch it, because it is a good one!

Just so u know, I am lovin the vids! Very nice sir.
But i don't think u get any desert for not using safety in this most recent one :p lol jk, keep up the great work, ur an inspiration man.

P.S. it looks like the chest fits well. And with the menacing face u should growl a little lol

Nice work, thanks for the tutorial video. Looking forward to the next!

Your welcome, glad you like them!
The real work will be starting soon...

I agree about the music, great to help focus... bad for video!
Very happy that you are enjoying the videos.

Happy to hear you like the videos, as I said above; they are about to get into heavier detail.
lol... yeah a growl may have helped.

Cereal, the chest looks great. Also, great work on explaining your process. Your attention to detail is fantastic and I hope you continue to share with us. Anyways, looking forward to the next installment. Keep up the good work!

UPDATE!...

This will be the last update until about Thursday as I will be away for a few days. Not too big of an update, but an update none the less!

Ok...
Started working on the chest piece, I basically started with the largest surface and will move outwards from there. I will complete the "right" side of the chest piece, once done I will follow up with a video on the left.

I printed up some reference pictures and started hacking away, rounding the pectoral to it's rough final shape...

Slapped on a nice thick coat of bondo to get rid of all the low spots... and there were plenty!

Sanding, sanding, sanding... :eek

Using a rasp, I first knocked down any hooks and raised spread marks, then did a thorough pass with a random orbit sander using 120grit. Finally a manual sanding with 220grit with a foam backer as to not leave focused finger pressure. Happy with how it is looking so far...

Finally, some glazing putty to fill in any pits and scratches.

Being that I was out for the better part of the day, I did not get to work until this evening. Being that it got too late to wait for the glaze coat to dry, I'll leave it until tomorrow morning.

Should time permit, I'll post some pictures to show how it looks after the final rough sanding.

As usual, and questions/comments always welcome! :D
