An old relic from high school. Only part of my old pep builds I felt like keeping. Always loved the beam rifle, and seeing as this will never be worked on again, I've been tempted to print one now that all of the armor is out. While I'm very rarely working on a carbine that ejects its mag, a nice simple prop with room for lights might be another fun project to add to my list.

It works! I'm going to re shape the leg mount so it fits on the thigh a little better. Very good resistance to falling off, I need to shake it while the magnum is flat to the ground for it to fall off.

Won't be diving too deep into a con floor while it's mounted. It's definitely not going to fall of on its own but were I to get bumped I'd lose it. Might go back and tweek the design on last time but I'm very happy with this!

Spiced it up a little. The original files had the handle as two parts with cut outs for supports. Don't see why joining them would cause any issues.

Assuming I plan this right, the new mount will still use the pegs but with an added notch that will lock in to the handle. If this works I'll be able to design the same structure onto different props like grenades or a new plasma rifle that wont fall apart like my first one.

Is all that pink stuff bondo?

New handle that hopefully I won't break in the same way as the last.

Surprisingly nice to hold as well!
Went ahead and did one last redo of the mount. Added a third magnet spot and made sure that the hooks will fit this time. It will take up a tad more area on the handle but it's still unobtrusive.

Work on finishing the armor is on hold for the moment. Need to find a more suitable spot to sand and spray paint than my balcony. I've secretly been working on the M6 in the garage and have the receiver and optic chromed. It is very shiny and I'm sure my painting antics will be noticed eventually.
Should have the handle and lazer done tomorrow along with detailing and weathering.

Time for me to ramble about my thought process on the carbine. But first a baby update photo.

This will be a meter long, 11ish cm wide (surprisingly slender) and 33.3cm tall when done, about 78% of what it would be in game.

So yesterday when I started printing I was set on no moving parts and no lights. Settled on a removable magazine, patched the model up a bit and all was good. Fast forward to today and I figured I could easily hollow out the lower area, rig up a spare 6000mah phone charger to some fish tank LEDs and cast some nice green resin sheets for the lighted areas.

Then I thought about wiring a set contacts into the receiver on top that would send power to a light in the magazine for the ammo counter. I figured a set of pegs to align it and a magnet to hold it in place could work. Lit when inserted, unpowered when taken out.

AND THEN I had an idea for a simple plunger released by a button or something that would kick the mag out. The support on these parts are 8% cubic infill so packing a nice hefty spring in somewhere shouldn't cause enough stress to break something. I'm going to save the mid section for last and work on the additions while the stock prints.

These modifications should be simple to design and implement. Been a while since I've played around with LEDs but I'm sure it'll come back to me. Im sure a few 9volts could do as well. Less of a fire and shock hazard maybe. I have something similar in mind for the suit lights when I get there.

Forgot to say a prayer to the measuring gods today. Messed up these stupid carbine support pegs three times before I noticed I sized them poorly. Doing what would be the cheek rest and upper handle now that they are sorted.

Okay! handle is set. Magnets will hold what will be a section for batteries in place. Figured that I can maybe turn the magazine into a self powered open circuit that will close when inserted and proceed to light the top of it. I hope that makes as much sense as it does in my head!

Was getting worried that this prop was going to be a little small. Pulled up a few images and it looks like the everything is scaled properly to me. The carbine is such a strange looking weapon that's just not as big as I thought.

12 hours into the hand guard print some part of the support gave away on the inside. Not really sure what it was going to support but everything is still printing. Gonna see how long I can let it run before something on the model fails
