HELLO! n00b here making first set of armor.
need paint tips
what type of paint? (spray, acrillic, etc.)
how many coats?
im still deciding what color a spartan blue or a master chief color

I use two coats of spray paint. It gives a more "professional" finish.

About how much cans of primer and color paint would it take to paint a whole suit? Also, is Walmart Color Place blue considered gloss or satin?

I bought a 1/4 gallon can and already painted a helmet and the left arm of my armor. I used less than the third part of the can on those four pieces (helmet, shoulder, forearm and hand plate).

when you say 1/4 gallon can, do you mean, aerosol spray can, or youre mixing paint and shooting it through a gun? or perhaps brushing it on?

Yes, I couldn't find the Master Chief's green color spray can, so I mixed the paint (1/4 of a paint gallon) and shoot it with a gun and my dad's compressor.

So far, I guess that 1/2 gallon of paint and 1/2 of primer will be enough for my armor.

Just curious if anyone has tried to dull the look of paint on your finished costume? I sealed my costume with a clear coat, but it gave it a semi-gloss finish. Curious if there are any suggestions on how to take the gloss out of it? I am not able to sand it down, since the costume has a texture to it, so would make it hard to sand. THanks in advance.

Take a Mr. Clean magic eraser and rub the clear coat. It will dull it a little (like the difference between gloss and satin, not gloss and matte) and it will avoid scratching like fine grit sandpaper would do to it.

I was gonna say, some 8000 grit water proof sandpaper should do the trick... and sand it in a circular motion.

What's the order of spray painting? like what do we have to buy?
What do you mean by order?

Do you mean in what order the type of paint goes on, or what colours first?

If you mean type, it goes primer (not necessary, but it helps the other paint stick on better), then whatever colour you're doing.
For my worn looks, I did primer, silver, vaseline spots on where I want the the worn spots, then the final colour. (White parts was white, then a far quick light spray of sliver for more texture. Then red was matte black, then some mistings of red, depending on how dark or light I wanted the red areas).

If you mean just colour, whatever final colour you want man, go hard.

hey i want to know what colors of paint i need for a master chief helm? also do i need to use bondo for the hardening?
There's no one exact colour for Chief to be used. Just use whatever paint matches Chief the best.

Bondo is meant to be used to smooth out the final display of your piece. It has nothing to do with paint. If you're doing pepakura, you have your cardstock piece, resin it, fiberglass the inside, and if you're lazy, you can just paint from there. OR you can use bondo to on the surface to fill in any holes, use it to try and fix any imperfections on the surface, etc, then you paint.

After I bondo, do I need to use automotive primer? I've bought spray cans multipurpose of 2-in-1 primer and paint for general use, will this work directly on the bondo?

I got a gloss paint but I need satin on it. The guy working there said to paint it and then mist on some satin white. How well does this work? Are there any more reliable methods?

Is no one else replied to the need posts except me?...lol...

@New guy: You don't HAVE to use an automotive paint, I myself just used a general duel indoor/outdoor paint and primer. Like I said, you also don't HAVE to use a primer, it just helps the final coats stick a little better. A 2 in 1 should work just fine.

@Shadow: Using a 8000 grit (super fine) sand paper on it should work. Using a satin on it may or may not work, I'm not sure. I can't see it working THAT well if you're just misting it on there. If it's too glossy for your liking, then you might just need to repaint it with either a satin or matte. Personally I prefer a matter finish; that way you're not all shiny in flash photos.

Perhaps take a look at some other builds and find out what colors they used. I used Krylon's Satin Italian Olive but in hindsight it seems a little too much like a dark camouflage green.

Wow, I have a lot of questions. If I'm using a flat Clear Coat, and I'm using adam's discoloring method for the edges (not the scratches, the brighter colors), when do I apply the clear coat? I'm using gloss base and a satin for discoloration, plus acrylics for details and scratches.

Question for you all... what color is ODST armor? Is it like a flat black color or is it some kind of metal color? I keep looking at ODST builds and WETA pictures but I can't figure it out. Does anyone know? And what kind of paints I should be getting to recreate the look?
