On a side note, why is this in the noob forum?

^^

Also, a 2 part mold wouldn't work?

Like Adam's ODST? (Maybe it wouldn't work with plaster, but with fiberglass/plasti paste?)

No, not unless he filled in the gap between the two points of the brim. The ODST doesn't have that problem, so a 2 part mother mold works.

I thought the same thing though, till I realized that...

It kind looks like the brim warped a little in this pic, but cameras always can do funny things to pictures.

I think it's because the silicone is loose in that pic (i took it off put it back in there)..
And partly because of the camera maybe.

New questions:
So i'm starting up on my new mother mold this weekend,
I would like to know if i could make my mother mold using bondo... Sean mentioned about it saying that i should reinforce it with fiberglass... what did you mean by this?

Also if i make a fiberglass mold, how am i supposed to use a release agent? if i use one wont it just get mixed with the resin? Or do i need a release agent at all?

And what would be the best way to make the "parting lines", what material?
I tried modelling clay but it doesnt stick to the silicone..

Thanks!

Erp... read my comment again:

Resin or even bondo/resin is a good material for a mother mold, provided you reinfoce it with some fiberglass or something.
Bondo alone may not be rigid enough for a good mothermold.. I suggest a 50/50 mix of bondo with polyester resin.. with fiberglass reinforcement.

I PM'ed you back about all these questions, check your inbox.

BTW Vaseline is a good release agent when making mother molds.. it's thick enough that your seperate fiberglass/resin pieces won't stick to each other.. just be sure to cover the entire matching surfaces... and a little beyond.

You might find vaseline in the medical stores (pharmacuticals)

NO!

Vaseline is very cheap and EVERYWHERE on this planet available. It doesn't matter if you silicone is "sticky" ( i would be worried if it did...).If you place your molder mold material on your silicone it will combine/stick to each other and your mold will be ruined.

Did you try cleaning the surface of the silicone with acetone like I suggested?
Yeah, didnt work either :(
Even tape doesnt stick to the silicone.

And falcon, i cant find Vaseline here.. I live in a french speaking area and when i go to the stores and ask "vaseline" they hazz no clue what i'm talking about. I checked a dictionairy, Vaseline is Vaseline in french..

Ask for petroleum jelly, I think thats the non-US branded term for it.

Should be located in the first aid section of the drug store

Here petroleum jelly is translated as vaseline the french language doesnt have "petroleum jelly" in it...
And i have unfortunately noticed that anyone here who knows how to speak french, cant speak english AT ALL.
When you go to the german speaking area (in switzerland) Surprisingly everyone speaks english.

I will look into another drug store, I couldnt find any at my local store.

Also, do you think turpentine would work instead of acetone?

If you've tried acetone already I don't see any need to use a greasy solvent like turpentine. Acetone is king of the solvents!
