I have wanting to make one of the MAC orbital guns like in the book. not sure how to do that, I have been recording descriptions and drawing designs for it, but I still need more help.

I was thinking, that I would Have a Large wooden disk, (maybe with a 3 foot radious)

have a smaller 4 foot diameter circle of wood with a metel track inbetween to make the top rotate

secure two metal poles close to the edge of the top board

have a thick bunje cord connecting like a slingshot.

Use card board to make tha casing about 3 feet tall and pivital up and down.

attach a plastic bucket on the cords to hold and shoot the ammo.

for the ammo I was thinking water ballons filled with red... something or other or use pepakura to make a missile. Help!! :) :)

No your not a noob, Thats the MAC station for reloads, It carries a small crew to repair it. but thats just a station.

The cannons look some thing like this, more the second one, the 3d one is there because its the best i could do in 3d sketch up

MAC's are basically gauss canons. they use powerful magnets to propel the object. The Acronym MAC stands for Magnetically Acellerated Canon or something along those lines. if you want a REAL mac gun you might want to investegate Gauss techonlogy and use a magnetic coil to propel it.

Believe it or not, I saw rough plans for a MAC fun typed out somewhere, I can't remember where though.

I do remember the two methods they were talking about.

The first was simply two powered rails that were momentarily exposed to an extremely high charge from very large capacitors. It's technically a rail gun design, but still MAC-esque. Something like this;

rail8.jpg

The second design was made using extremely strong round neodymium magnets. You line them up strong to weak, and pass a ball bearing through from the weak end in some sort of tube to keep it centered.

Sorry I can't remember more, but I'm sure there's lots of info out there regarding rail and gauss guns.

Thanks, I think I will try them both, I will do more research. I am also going to make a small one for when me and the neighberhood kids have water ballon fights. (I would use the slingshot style and a bucket to launch about 10 baloons at once.) I will soak every one : ). The other versions will be for fun, ya know shooting bales of hay that are painted to look like covenent fighter ships.
Woot!!
I found this website to make a gauss rifle, I think i am going to make it a lot larger!! thanks for the advise!

You do know that the mac cannons barrel is about 420 meters long? right?

And the guy who posted 1st with the picture, he was actually correct, It's a mac cannon... well the long thing on the ship is the barrel of the cannon... the circle thing around it is the station... but yes the long thing pointing out is the cannon.

This sounds extremely dangerous. I'm not sure of the legal liability, but I'm pretty sure that this website could be held liable if one of you builds something powerful enough to injure yourselves...

...Or, you know, destroy a planet.

Here's the most comprehensive listing I've found for Halo's MACs.. http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Mac

You'll notice that the MAC on Cairo Station was large enough to fire the MasterChief as a projectile .. umm.. is that the kinda' thing you're going for?

I remember trying to get to the top of the MAC on Cairo Station, I never actually finished doing it, but here's someone that did:
http://ducain.org/utfoo/maproom/[03]Cairo%...on/gunclimb.htm
(the link is screwed-up :( it's got symbols in it that are used as formatting tools on the forum, but if you click on it, choose "03 Cairo Station", and then "gunclimb.htm", you'll get there to Frogblast's cool account/films of getting up to the top.)

As for working on details of making a firing weapon, I suggest we keep that off of here.. this is a costume forum, and yeah.. I agree with Sean on the potential for liability.
