Falcon, the point of us not being so heavy handed with members is to give them a chance to change. Surprisingly enough some do, and have become upstanding members of our forum because we gave them that chance. It we immediately brought the hammer down on every person who steps out of line, we would have that opportunity to help them improve themselves.

Those who abuse our lenience are pinpointed quickly and dealt with. Adding this clarification to our guidelines is a big step in that direction. We do use the warning system, and there are consequences. All infractions are tracked.. we just prefer to allow people the chance to make up for their mistakes. Not doing that I think would be a detriment to us all.

You can call it babysitting if you like, but it's one of the duties of moderating. We don't just walk around pounding people into the ground, we're here to facilitate, in many forms.

This happens on EVERY forum. Flaming on forums is pretty common, and I think this site is alot nicer than most. But quite frankly, as this site gets bigger. the morale will get worse and flaming will be more common. Thats why I don't know why every wants to make the site bigger...

I whole-heartedly agree with the thread.

As a noob, it feels pretty good to be welcome openly instead of ridicule on my first post.

its those idiot noobs that necro post and piss off the others that really mess up the vibe here.

but, you are all total strangers to me, so i cant act like a total jack@$$ to you all, because that would be pretty dumb :p

isnt that what we want? niceness on a forum about an M-rated game focused on killing aliens killing humans....

lolz that sounded a lot better when i wrote it...

Yeah, but that's not all; some important people (no names) just happen to beat down on other peoples projects. I swear, all of the threads where people are about to make metal armor are just shot down by 'better' people. I, personally, think it's simply pathetic jealousy because the 'better' people aren't willing to put the time and effort into making and remaking this new & improved* armor or whatever it is. If some people just pulled it down a little I think this place might really see some enhancement.

Whatever. Some people just take it too far.

*Okay, that's a paradox, because if something new is new, than it can't be improved, otherwise it's not new. Get it? If not, go back to the star...

EDIT:

Taken from your signature:
FOR ALL YOU NOOBS OUT THERE: I SEEM TO BE THE ONE WHO KNOWS A LOT ABOUT PEPAKURA BUILDING, SO DONT HESITATE TO ASK ME FOR HELP!
... right. And that's why you don't like them. But anyway, don't take this harshly, I just thought I'd point some things out. :)

You are totally right Sean.

The only thing about the moderator team, is that some mods seems pretty inactive (ie : Frizzlefry : Last Seen: 24th February 2008 - 01:17 PM and Spartan+Mjolnir=ownage : Last Seen: 27th February 2008 - 10:42 PM & MustangMatt `Last Seen: 11th November 2007 - 02:42 AM)

And maybe there should be a mod or two for the noob section (Like associated to this section)

My 0,2 cents.

And you guys are doing a awesome job, I wish I could make donations more often.

But hopefully this won't turn into another bungie.net where the "overlords" will mercilessly throw the "banhmmer" at anyone, at any time, out of no where.

Ooohh, Overlords and forum ninjas... phish, whatever.

I honestly agree with everything you said sean. The comments on this forum are seemingly going downhill. I have noticed that it repeatedly seems to be coming from a specific few members however I can't remember and wouldn't mention any names - I'm sure you mods are aware as it is. Hopefully something can be done and this forum can become more encouraging. Any way that is all.

Yes but as other pointed out it goes somewhat beyond that. We've always had the 'Be nice to each other ' rule, this is a clarification. Sadly it was needed.

@ CPU64: I don't think this website will ever become like that... long as the members don't start acting like bungie.net members! :D

@ LastSpartan: True there are some mods AWOL, but I believe that we would have to remove their status to get them unlisted as mods. It's tough to do that to old friends.. I think that some new mods are needed from time to time, and we do add more as needed, not sure when it's going to happen again though.

Just wanted to say thanks to all for noting the change to the guidelines, and if you have any questions about conduct feel free to ask.

Ok, this is a good start. I agree with pretty much all of it. Falcon brought up a good point though. I skimmed over the responses that Sean and Dead both posted to his replies. I must say I'm still half-and-half on that point.

My reasoning...

The one thing wrong with the internet is accountability. On the topic of forums, you can say you are whoever you want to be and that's you. Your identity is usually near anonymous. Some people take this to mean they can say whatever they want and not have to worry about consequences as it is just the internet after all. The same applies here. Now I'm all for giving people chances, but I'm growing more and more weary of it as the same things usually keep happening. People are creatures of habit. No I'm not suggesting immediate banning of those people that break these newer guidelines. Warning is fine and all, but you only get one warning ticket when you're pulled over in a car. The next time it's a fine no matter what. What I'm trying to get at is to make lesser punishments for infractions after the first warning. The person is still around and hopefully starts to learn their actions do have consequences here. I know there is the ability to take away someone's posting ability for a set amount of time. This is just a suggestion, but I think showing a firmer hand will show those this really applies to that you're serious.

One more thing, cynicism and sarcasm should be left to the real world. It never translates well to just text. Witty retorts should be left to people in the outside world, not here. Here they're often mistaken as insults and flaming which just leads to an argument no one meant to start.

All in all, I like the new declaration Sean. I had started to notice the influx of negative comments, and they were really starting to irk me. I'm glad to hear they never went unnoticed. Keep up the good work on keeping this place friendly and fun, mods.

Thanks,
Magnum

Oh, not to worry. As stated we are tracking those that break the rules. A Second time breaking the same rule almost always results in penalties, leading up to a ban. We are serious about this.

I agree with your sentiment, but we must be cautious about being too authoritarian. We want people to be able to have fun here, not running in fear from secret forum ninjas. We just don't want people insulting each other. The rule of thumb is whether the joke you're making is at another members expense.. are you making fun of someone? Best to keep it to yourself.

Thanks Magnum. We're doing our best to keep this place orderly and fun for everyone. ;)

I guess what I was trying to say with whole cynicism and sarcasm part was that some people like to hide their nastiness behind these things. Some see it as an excuse to get away with making degrading remarks when the other person barely understands or even realizes it. Doing that in my opinion is like a 10th grader picking on a 5th grader, pointless. More or less, it's something I think some people need to work on. Like you said, if it's a joke(sarcastic or not) at someone's expense, it's better left unsaid. I just want those people that do this sort of thing to be aware that this type of commenting is destructive as well and needs to be improved upon.

No one is innocent as far as all of this is concerned. Everyone needs to improve on being a little nicer. I'm also trying to better myself in this regard. My advice so far is just learn to ignore comments you don't like, and move on to another topic of interest. Cast the first stone sort of thing. Well, that's all I say on the subject from now on. Let's all get back to work.

very well written. :)

bdw, ide just like to point out something on the matter of inactive mods or there not being enough, technical we are mods because of the report button. if we see something we think is out of line we can report it to the mods and let them sort it out...
actually, we get the easy part, they're charged with the task of cleaning this place up. a lot of people see the 'mod' position as one of power but their bound by the same rules as us, the only power they have above the rest of the members is the power to take out the trash.
wow, sorry, a bit of topic

heh, i just got the title. genius!!! XD was wonderin why it wasnt spelled with a 'Z'

After writing a PM back to someone here concerning this I realized something... most people either find it redundant or absolutely overdue. I think that most everyone here falls into one of two categories concerning forum conduct:

The first is people who need this rule to be in place for them to know what they can and cant do. Some people actually do rely on rules to be put into place to help guide them on how to behave.

The second category is people who take this sort of thing for granted, that we can all be mature responsible people and don't have to be told how to behave.

Then again there are some people who may be a little of both. Some members know better than to behave the way they do, but refuse to let anyone tell them what to do. I guess we found category three. ;)

Anyhow for those that don't need to be told how to behave, sorry if it was unecessary review. For those who are unsure of where they stand, this should clarify things.

Thanks again.

I like this thread. Thank you Sean for making people aware that niceness is good.
There's a couple other things I've noticed more of lately that I think should be addressed/ people should keep in mind:

--All 3d modeling, pep files, all drawings, templates, tutorials and pretty much anything else that is made to help other people out is done on free time. It seems fairly rude to see things like this:
 wearez the filez???? when u be doneeeee??? You need to make template for me
in some of these threads. All things that are user-contributed are done and posted to help out the community. I know some things get people excited, and things like 'bump for progress' are done out of curiousity and a desire to see a project through... but demanding things is not cool.

--People need to give advice on only what they know. There are plenty of members here now who have a lot of experience doing what they do. It seems that a fair amount of arguments/ heated debate are started because somebody makes a post in an advice thread based on what they guess, or might have maybe read somewhere sometime. The next several posts are usually somebody who has much more experience in that area arguing with the person who guessed. I know we all want to be helpful, but sometimes guesses and misinformation are worse than not answering at all.

All everybody needs to keep in mind was best said by 'Ted' Theodore Logan and Bill S. Preston, Esq....
'Be excellent to each other.'
