Paper Mache Instead Of Resin

Hello

This is probably a stupid question, but I am curious - Resin is used to make the pepakura armour stronger and to make it easier for the fibreglass to adhere correct? What if you used paper mache insted, then glassed over that instead of resin-ing your carefully made piece. If this were to work, it would increase the chance of your piece surviving the initial resin-ing.
I doubt that rot would be a problem because the fibreglass would form a seal where the bacteria could not get in.

Anyway, just thinking.

Close, resin and fiberglass are pretty much the same thing. You put resin ON the fiberglass which causes the fiberglass to get rock hard. doing plain resin for the first few coats on a pep just ensures that when you put the heavier fiberglass coats on the pep model it wont warp.
the theory of using paper mache is so so. the problem being that paper mache is like 10X heavier than resin is not to mention its using water which also takes longer to dry giving the pep model that much more time to warp or have something go wrong. resin on average when mixed right cures in about 15-20 mins.

sooo while paper mache has been used before. I personally would really not suggest it.

To correct LS, resin dries in 15-20 minutes, but cures in 1-2 hours, depending on the temperature/humidity.

Don't use paper-mache. It's been used countless times, and most have warped, collapsed, or fallen apart altogether.

Hi, I'm new here (this is my first post actually) but for my first helmet which I made by myself on pepakura (see my youtube channel) I am going to papier mache it and then paint it. Would this be recommended considering this is not only the first time I have tried to make anything using pepakura but actually making a model based on an already designed and created product (ie Mark VI Mjolnir Helmet). I think it would be best for me because then if I screw up I know I haven't wasted my £30 odd or so. I can also put multiple test coats of paint on this version to test how the final finish on the final version would be.

Thanks,
Great site btw, found it on youtube from dedicated to the 405th video. That guy has a nice armour!!

I would highly reccomend resin, one bottle is easily enough to finish a helmet anyway, and i haveb only seen a few well made mache helmets.

do not use paper mache it turns out bad and will look bad just use the fiberglass its not that expensive and if fiberglass is much too expensive for you then you really need to re-evaluate your ability to do this and yeah get a good respirator from home depot they are about 25 - 30 bucks mine only cost 26 and works great i wish you luck on your project hope to see some cool work from ya :p

Actually, it isn't good, even for a first timer, in my honest opinion. Trying getting your hands on Aqua-Resin, which is resin without the toxic fumes. Also, you can use Frost's Hot-Glue Method in place of fiberglass on the inside. Make sure to wear safety gear when sanding Aqua-Resin, though, because the airborne particles are still harmful.

Also, 'that guy' is Adam Grumbo, the Creator and Root Admin of the 405th, and one of the most well-known Halo armors out there.

EDIT: Halofan, please be more kind to new members. This is his first project, and he just wants to check his options, Mmk? I don't see you having any more experience than making two helmets and necroing old topics.

Besides, if he doesn't have a respirator (Which costs anwhere from $30-$70), fiberglass and resin will have horrible effects on his future. Use common sense before posting, because you're about to cause a new person's death.

Actually, I was talking about the person I quoted.

Plus, if he uses British pounds as currency, he obviously lives there, and respirators may or may not cost more than respirators in America, and his spending limit is around $60, although I'm not sure if a read it right, and I suck at currency conversions.

Paper mache on fiberglass wouldnt work. Fiberglass only hardens with resin because the way it soaks in and dries. It might add some strength, but not much because it's not the right combination.
