Resining & Fibre Glassing Tutorial/How To

instead of using resin can you use bondo, then fiberglass, then bondo again? ( with sanding in between each step)
cause i already have bondo and fiberglass, and i don't want to go spend money on resin if i don't have to.
thanks

Im guessing you Could do it. But you would need a thick layer of bondo on the helmet to make it strong and that would make it heavy.
You would save money if you resin it, because you might need to remake the helmet/armor after a while anyway.

crap, i just started resining and fibreglassing yesterday. ( btw, i got the same resin, and didn't even know it untill now.)
i think i did it wrong though. what i did was paint the resin onto the underside of the fibreglass cloth, ( which was cut out to the right shape) then i stuck it to the paper helmet and put another coat of resing over the fibreglass cloth.
Is this okay or did i ruin my helmet? ( i only have a section done, most of it hasn't been glassed yet )
hope i didn't ruin it. if someone could tell me if i ruined it that would be great.
thanks

also,
how far will that container of resin get me?
just the helmet, the helmet and the chest, the whole suit etc.
thanks

p.s.
does anyone know why i can't post my own threads?
i can only add replies.
thanks

you didnt ruin your helmit the way u did it. u did it diffrently but u didnt ruin it. what u should do is resin outside first then fiberglass the inside with resin.(dip glass in resin or lay glass on peice then coat in resin.) that way you can sand and smooth the peice.

btw 1 can of resin got my helmit my chest 2 boots and a thin layer on my shins.
dont use to much hardener per lid full of resin you only need 4 or 5 drops not even(i added way to much hardener on my first bacth and ran of hardener before resin, had to go buy another can and use its hardener) and when resining the helm PUT THE PAPER VISOR IN TOO!! your helmit might warp (like mne did) and youll have to start over(like me)

uh well yeah....i hate to be the berrer of bad news but ur gonna have to restart if you used regular paper. regular paper will turn to mush when you fiberglass it. thats y u need to use 110 lbs cardstock. you can buy it at walmart or staples for like 15 20 bucks

VERY BAD! Regular paper will collapse because it tends to buckle when wet with resin. That's why we use cardstock paper: it doesn't buckle when you apply the resin.

well, i added some resin to the helmet already and it didn't seem to buckle or anything, so i'm hoping it's fine, otherwise i'll have to remake the helmet, the chest, the biceps, the forearms, and the crotch.
right now i'm making the shins out of construction paper ( we ran out of cardstock 2 weeks ago on something, dont remember what)

most resins and hardners are a 1:1 ratio but just google the resin you are looking to use. If you already have the resin it will say on the container. By the way thanks for the tutorial, I am actually working a rogue helmet. However I will use plaster rolls before fiberglassing as to ensure the edging and smoothness.

thats true but if you use plaster rolls first you can then fiberglass it with no problem

do you need to use the facemask for resining or just for the fiberglass? or both

Buy a resperator. for the whole project there are fumes from bondo/paint/resin they are only like 20-30 bucks and worth every penny. your brain cells will thank you

I know you meant well but next time you respond to a post, check its date. It's from almost a year ago and he has probably gotten an answer by now. In fact, the one after his post answered it.

I have a quick question about applying fibreglass to weapons.
How do you personally do it,
So far my plan is to build it,cut it in half, fibreglass inside, put it back together, fibreglass the join then bondo over the top of the fibreglass, but I think it may ruin the shape of the gun a little.
How do you go about it?

Does anyone have a good substitute for fibreglassing? It's not easy to get neither a full respirator, nor fibreglass cloth here in finland....

Or the resin, for that matter.....

uhh the only other possible option is hot glue method :( sorry

I would say the first two (thats what i use) and hardner should come with the resin if it is bondoo fiberglass resin 12 drops of hardner per oz. ps it just looks funny
