**Halo Reach Kurki**
Hey hey groovers... So much for taking some time off from doing a build, huh? Anyway, to fulfill some weird non-commital obligation to myself to build a weapon between every armour/helmet build I do, I decided to have a crack at Emile's Kurki, the awesome knife he sports on his right shoulder...
I knocked this baby up last weekend in between mothers day and some parental endorsed pyromania (Don't ask. It's not incriminating, just disgusting, so don't ask)
Eww... Anyway, back to the knife...
I thought about actually making the blade out of real steel for a while, but I have my sisters kids come to visit every now and then, so I decided to go with the slightly less lethal MDF to make the blade with...
That there is a small plate of metal. I was going to embed some small magnets in the blade near the hilt to hold the knife in place, but it seems to be a snug enough fit without going to the extra trouble that I decided not to bother...
I know, I know... the pomel is nothing like what Emile's knife looks like, but have any of you ever seen me stick to cannon... I wanted the handle of this sucker to look just slightly more stylized than it's in-game counterpart...
See? Nice and snug
...
Sand, prime, fi... uh, hmmm... No filling...? Doing a whole build in MDF does seems kinda weird for me... I'm not used to leaving the builders bog on the shelf. Did I mention before how much I love working with this stuff?
Some detail from the tip of the sheath... I'm doing this entire build from looking at my Emile figure. While the toy itself doesn't show this cut in at all, the picture on the packet (presumably from in-game) does have it on it, so I cut that in with my Dremel and a high speed cutter bit...
You won't believe how hard it is in Australia to find a flat head (straight bit) counter sunk screw in an appropriate guage for this job. Even for somebody who works in a hardware store... Sheer insanity. It's almost like Phillips drive (the cross head) screws have taken over the country... I dug around in a box in the shed and found an old rusty one... I'll buff it back so it doesn't look so crusty and it'll be perfect!
I don't remember seeing these on the knife in Reach, but I figured they wouldn't take that long to cut in so why not... On a real combat knife they would prevent the blade from getting stuff in some poor hapless victim due to the vacuum caused when driving the knife in. The small slits allow air into the wound thus equalizing the suction on the blade, freeing it up to slide back out... Gruesome...
And that's all I've got for now... Hopefully I get a bit more time this upcoming weekend to do a bit more... I was going to do a painting tutorial with this build, but there really isn't enough detail on it to warrant going that far into it. I'll still talk you all through what I'm doing though...
More updates to follow. 'Til then people, stay groovy...
