Love the detail work on you're sidearm, And the paint really made everything stand out. As for the helm....Well let just say my hat's off to you the creative way of solving the visor, and I love the look. :D

Some excellent work here in my opinion. Some nice step by step shots of the gun, detailed paint and woodwork, and the removable clip! I would love to see more angles of the helmet and how you accomplished that visor. Seeing this post was excellent timing since I just started a scratch build magnum with cardboard this weekend.

Your weapon making skills....
*What's going on in my head V*

All jokes aside, you have done excellent work and I can't wait to see what else you have to put forth on the table of awesomeness!

Stay Frosty

wow... i wasn't expecting to get such a reaction over my gun and helmet. thanks guys... it's good to know it's appreciated by the people in the know (people who have an interest in this stuff, not just people i know who don't know what it's meant to be).

good luck... i love scratch builds, i had a heap of fun doing this one, and i'm gonna do another one again too, probably sooner than later, you know, strike while the iron is hot... i'm trying to nut out how to get the trigger to fire and cycle the top half open for the next one i build, then clip back into place. i'll probably go with a small spring of sorts, something a bit more stable than a rubber band. they have a tendency to perish after a while...

send me a link to yours when you start putting up some updates and progress pics, i would love to see another persons skew on the pistol... will you be going game authentic or taking some artistic liberties as i did...

Absolutely Amazing mate :D wish I was as good at wood work as you :D
BTW how did you do the detailing on the grip?

thanks random nacho's, but i'm not that good, i guess i kinda fluked it with this one. but then that's why i'm here, to keep making stuff like this 'til i do get good. as for the grip i just drew the lines in with a pencil and used my dremel with an engraving bit to lightly carve the details into it. if i had more time i would have etched into a bit of plastic and stuck it down in the grip instead, the mdf i used tends to loose structural integrity when cutting details into it that fine, and if you look closely, you can see in some area's along the edges the pattern isn't as regular as it should be...

**Halo Reach Kurki**

Hey hey groovers... So much for taking some time off from doing a build, huh? Anyway, to fulfill some weird non-commital obligation to myself to build a weapon between every armour/helmet build I do, I decided to have a crack at Emile's Kurki, the awesome knife he sports on his right shoulder...

I knocked this baby up last weekend in between mothers day and some parental endorsed pyromania (Don't ask. It's not incriminating, just disgusting, so don't ask)

Eww... Anyway, back to the knife...

I thought about actually making the blade out of real steel for a while, but I have my sisters kids come to visit every now and then, so I decided to go with the slightly less lethal MDF to make the blade with...

That there is a small plate of metal. I was going to embed some small magnets in the blade near the hilt to hold the knife in place, but it seems to be a snug enough fit without going to the extra trouble that I decided not to bother...

I know, I know... the pomel is nothing like what Emile's knife looks like, but have any of you ever seen me stick to cannon... I wanted the handle of this sucker to look just slightly more stylized than it's in-game counterpart...

P5110872.jpg

See? Nice and snug :) ...

P5110873.jpg

Sand, prime, fi... uh, hmmm... No filling...? Doing a whole build in MDF does seems kinda weird for me... I'm not used to leaving the builders bog on the shelf. Did I mention before how much I love working with this stuff?

P5110874.jpg

Some detail from the tip of the sheath... I'm doing this entire build from looking at my Emile figure. While the toy itself doesn't show this cut in at all, the picture on the packet (presumably from in-game) does have it on it, so I cut that in with my Dremel and a high speed cutter bit...

You won't believe how hard it is in Australia to find a flat head (straight bit) counter sunk screw in an appropriate guage for this job. Even for somebody who works in a hardware store... Sheer insanity. It's almost like Phillips drive (the cross head) screws have taken over the country... I dug around in a box in the shed and found an old rusty one... I'll buff it back so it doesn't look so crusty and it'll be perfect! :D

I don't remember seeing these on the knife in Reach, but I figured they wouldn't take that long to cut in so why not... On a real combat knife they would prevent the blade from getting stuff in some poor hapless victim due to the vacuum caused when driving the knife in. The small slits allow air into the wound thus equalizing the suction on the blade, freeing it up to slide back out... Gruesome...

And that's all I've got for now... Hopefully I get a bit more time this upcoming weekend to do a bit more... I was going to do a painting tutorial with this build, but there really isn't enough detail on it to warrant going that far into it. I'll still talk you all through what I'm doing though...

More updates to follow. 'Til then people, stay groovy...

The gun, helmet, and knife are all AMAZING. I... just... no words.

Also, have you thought about using magnetic paint? Michael's carries it in almost every color.

thanks meyersm4. i'm glad you like them :D

we had something akin to the magnetic paint here in Australia some time ago as part of a select range of interior designer paints called "Wonderwalls". Dulux, as is the case with most of the fancy decorator paints in the land of Oz, produced it along with some acrylic blackboard finish that didn't rub off like most acrylics at the time and another product that could make a regular wooden door look like it was made from heavy gauge stainless steel... i wish they still produced them, as i know i would certainly put them to good use, but unfortunately they have moved on to different products :( ... the only product still produced from that range is the blackboard paint, and with almost 100% coverage in a single coat, it would make very easy work of doing a blackwash :) ...

i would consider importing the paint you mentioned, but i know what the freight is like with Australian logistics involving flamable/dangerous goods, let alone bringing them in from another country, so i guess until i find a local supplier for them, sadly i'm going to have to suffice with what i can get through work... i have looked into a local paint manufacturer called FX, but the price of some of their stuff rivals the cost of everything else needed to make a complete helmet, start to finish and including the price of labour if you paid someone to build it, so maybe not them either... still, they do have some very nice products for those interested...

wow... that's all i can say.. i think you may have just inspired me to make my own wood props... that kukiri is bloody amazing, and the gun is jaw dropping. not to mention the helmet, i love how you worked the visors, i might have to try that with a EVA helmet... :p

i find wood the easiest thing to use (MDF included) for making weapons. i did enjoy making the plasma pistol, but it was more just to try a new method of fiberglassing out before i moved on to trying it on a helmet... as far as using that particular method on weapons, the inside is just too unpredictable to see how thick the walls are when cutting details in that are deep. with the wood i have an exact depth that i can go to before i start going through to the other side :D ... that being said, some weapons do lend themselves to be glassed better than others...

looking very sweet my friend :)

thank you Mstruvmgc. i coated the knife and the sheath in a metallic silver finish earlier yesterday, but only got round to snapping a few shots off this afternoon... hopefully i get time to put them up tonight. i've got a special idea for the edge of the blade and the grip :D but i want to think about how to go about it first to make sure it turns out right...

Wow this is the first wood piece I've seen, then again I'm fairly new all around to prop making, I'm just surprised at how effective you've used your materials. Nicely done.

Pretty good stuff in this thread! Loving the knife, and that magnum looks BEAST! Keep up the good work, sir! Oh and very innovative approach to the visor on that EVA prototype too!

Righteous, can't wait to see what you have come up with :)

i finally took some photo's of it today while on the job, but i'm thinking the paint might not show it up quite as good as i had originally planned... oh well, at least i know i tried, and if it fails, then i will try something else out on my next bladed weapon build :D ...

for somethings i figure wood is just so much easier to work with. i mean, it's just there. you don't have to cut and fold any paper, you don't have to wait for resin to dry, it's just so quick and convenient. but only for somethings. i don't want to try doing any armour out of it (as in a full build), but i know it is doable. i once saw a ODST helmet made entirely out of timber and bending ply. it was amazing, and once it was painted you had no idea it was wood. but i think that would be punching above my weight taking something like that on... maybe in a few years when i want something really challenging :D ...

thanks Sangheilioz. hopefully i get the knife finished off this weekend. i've got another big project in the pipeline that i'm just dying to get cracking on. i already started doing the pep work on it, so once i'm far enough in with the progress, i'll start to put some pics up :) ... everytime i walk into my kitchen (it resides on a long island bench just outside my kitchen along with all my other builds) i fall in love with that gun all over and can't help but feeling nostalgic about the first time i shot a Grunt in the head with it while trying to get off the Pillar of Autumn... uh, not me personally, but you know what i mean :p ...

Thought I better put some more update pics up... I didn't get the knife finished on the weekend like I wanted, but I did get damn close... Not a lot to go on it now :) ...

I coated everything in the silver mostly just to seal the surface... Nothing fancy going on here...

P5150886.jpg

Then I gave the sheath a coat of Medium Grey and a flat black coat to the grip so the silver wouldn't be seen through the grip when I finished it...

I know the flat black looks crappy here, but trust me, that's not the finished product. I coated it with the flat black so the silver doesn't show through the gaps between the leather bands that cover the grip... It doesn't need to be perfect, in fact like this would be better as it makes it look even more grimy if uneven colour comes through the gaps :D ...

P5180894.jpg

And there's the red band on the sheath. I used Tamiya acrylic modeling paint for this again, same technique as on my MkV variant...

So that's all I've got time to put up this morning, I've got to get ready for work now, but rest assured, I'll put a few more pics up when I get home this afternoon...

I'll be back...
