I suppose it depends on how much of your health you're willing to destroy in order to save money.

Read the warnings on the packages. Heed the warnings on the packages. The whole hobby is expensive, so don't skimp on the safety equipment. Lowe's or Home Depot carry proper respirators that will serve you just fine.

If you want to kill yourself to save a few bucks, I suppose that's your business. Bear in mind that long before you die from them, many of the fumes we work around will make you stupid and impair motor functions. These effects tend to be cumulative, meaning the more exposure you get, the worse your symptoms.

In short: BUY A RESPIRATOR!
I hope I did'nt sound like a cheapskate (if thats how you spell it, if not just sound it out) but I'm going to try to make a cardboard chestpeice to see if it works and if it does, I will make a whole suit.

I think you just entered into the realm of Molding 1337357... the elite club of molders... lol ... WELCOME!... get ready to be bashed with the rest of us members lol.

People will never stop asking you questions, you just point them to a post and say read... I feel you... sometimes its overwhelming.

Overwhelming?
yea, because its so hard on you to get a compliment every now and then on your work and a question or two everyday.
No ones actually telling you to read anything, so if you don't like reading pms dont hit the open button.
simple as that.
Stop complaining about how good you are, its not like you mind the compliments you get so stop your whining.
Take pride in the fact that people go to you for help, it means that they admire your work and your doing a good job.

Any opportunities to work on your armor during your deployment?

Be safe in Afghanistan!

(It would kick-ass to see some pics of an armored Spartan on patrol over there! )

I think you should take a small step back and think about who you're telling to stop whining. When you have reached the level of armor and propmaking that Spase and Thor and others here have, THEN you can say something. These guys are good. That's why their work is in the elite showcase. They have provided the rest of us with WIP threads, tutorials, and how-to advice. ON a daily basis they are inundated, yes inundated, with questions and demands, many of which are so inane that it boggles the mind. I felt that this needed to be said. I'm sure that Spase or one of the other mods will have something to say, but I needed to say this. Beware the ban-hammer.

Assuming he used it in a combat zone, and I doubt hes anywhere near that level of re-re.

Somewhere on or near base is what I had in mind when I made the comment. Obviously I wouldn't want Thor, or anyone else, to add any risk to himself.

A small step back?
Just because they make good props dosnt mean I need to treat them any differently than I treat anyone else.
He was complaining over jack $#!T and i called him out on it.
Big deal.
I still have the right to my opinion so get off my a**
If they dont like the PMs they dont need to read them.
And if someone is requesting for them to make them armor for free or somthing all that need be said is a simple stfu.

Alright guys, don't argue over this stuff. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, just don't be a douche bag about it. Stay on topic and don't muddy up the thread arguing rights or whatever. Posts cleaned up.

Madam you are now my very favorite person in the world. Apparently goofy is contagious or something. I almost threw in my $0.02 on that whole mess.

About working on this project during deployment: I've got a "go-box" with everything I need for pep building standing by to be mailed to me when and if I find out I'll actually be able to use it. My wife is also well versed in all of the local places to get all the supplies I might need once I run out of glue or X-acto blades. With a tiny bit of luck I'll be able to crank out a few more sizes of a few more parts. That way I'll just have to do the fairing, molding, casting, and painting when I get back.

About wearing paper armor out on patrols: No. Just no.

The parts that I fiberglassed were fiberglassed just like everyone else does, just like it's explained in the stickies, and so on. When you ask about "that stuff" that I painted on the inside, I'm not sure which stuff you're talking about.

It's possible you're so new to the forum that you don't know where anything is. I'd recommend you start by reading up on the threads in the section labelled "Pepakura and Cardboard Armor" where you will find a thread that's permanently at the top of the list (called a "sticky") which will answer your questions. If that's too much work, I've added THIS LINK to a thread which tells you all you need to know. If you have any further questions about fiberglassing, ask them there.

I've been doing molding and casting and propmaking for a long time. There are a lot of things that I use unusual techniques or materials for just because I've got random leftovers laying around in the shop. I try my darnedest to put as much info as I can into the thread and be as helpful as possible. If I've done something unusual without explaining it, then it's worth asking about. If it's a very basic question (that is answered in a sticky or a thread that comes up easily with the search engine) or it's already been answered, please don't ask again.

I apologize if this post has a negative tone, I'm just trying to avoid having the same questions asked dozens of times and cluttering up the threads.

Well you did a good job Thor, because you made me understand and it's quite rare :p

I think what you are asking Franbew is what he used inside his pepakura pieces? I think some of them, like the helmet, he used casting resin backed up with some fiberglass mat for more strengh (Correct me if I'm wrong Thor)

Basicly, Casting Resin = Plastic in 2 parts (Part A, Part  and it become rock solid once it cures. It's different from the good ol' fiberglass and resin.

You can PM me or any other Q&A Member if you have other questions, I'll make my best to answer them.

I dont know if you would want to ask the Q&A team about that.

Theres nothing wrong with going with them but i would go to people that have done it before

I personally did it and i love using casting resin instead of fiberglassing

ok so if i understand right instead of using any fiberglass cloth or nothing i just paint the outside 3 coats very thin each coat with the resin after dried i then go with casting resin on the inside for superior hardness?

i mean this way seems like a time saver compared to having to put all the cloth or mat on the helm.

if i said anything wrong plz correct me. im trying to do the same way thor did his helms and his molds.
