ok so if i understand right instead of using any fiberglass cloth or nothing i just paint the outside 3 coats very thin each coat with the resin after dried i then go with casting resin on the inside for superior hardness?

i mean this way seems like a time saver compared to having to put all the cloth or mat on the helm.

if i said anything wrong plz correct me. im trying to do the same way thor did his helms and his molds.

Ive done it with out coating the outside with fiberglass resin and it work perfect

But yeah you have it correct

EDIT: Straight from the first post

"Step three, coat the paper models with fiberglass resin:

Step four, coat the inside with several layers of urethane casting resin for strength:"

You will not likely find casting resin at your local home depot. You can get it in small quantities at local hobby shops, but if you buy it that way it will not be cost effective. I've posted links to some of my suppliers in previous posts. If that's really too much work, CLICK HERE.

Honestly, the fiberglass method is the way to go. The materials are inexpensive and easy to find almost everywhere (including your local Home Depot). That way, if you make a mistake it won't cost you very much. When you add the matt, remember to do it on the INSIDE or you will be covering over all of the details you worked so hard to build into your pep model.

Again, all of these questions have been answered either earlier in the thread or in the stickies.

quote from post #280 "I did the masking with mustard. The mustard works out to be thick enough that I can goop it on wherever I want it and not have to worry about having it dribble all over the place. It doesn’t have to be mustard. If you’d rather use ketchup or catsup or horseradish sauce or béarnaise, it’s entirely up to you. You just want something that the paint won’t stick to. At this point, the helmet looked like so:"

I just saw this in rereading the thread.....YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!!!!! Thing like that is why I love Your work!!!! Your my biggest inspration/ motivator on this site. Anyway, Keep up the great work! Hope your doing well and staying safe!

I've decided this thread needs more butt:

Not really. Instead, I just got to a stopping point on my HALO3 Mk5 helmet build and decided to crank out a space diaper in my size.

I made the pep model with all of the support stiffeners in place, coated the inside of the piece with urethane casting resin to make it stiffer, cut the supports out, and then cut the whole thing into four pieces (front, back, and both hip boxes). The plan now is to add a bit of length to either end of the front and back pieces so that I can make the size of the final piece a bit more adjustable. Once again I'll have a part that's sized perfectly for me, but can be easily modified to fit someone slightly larger or smaller.

Before anyone asks, I have about a 30" waist. The ACU pants I'm wearing in the photos are size "medium-regular" and fit a bit loose. The t-shirt is a medium. That should give you some idea of how to scale the pep to fit yourself.

Also, when I started pouring the resin to reinforce this piece I'd meant to make it red. I didn't add quite enough pigment, so it came out light red. I decided that since I'm going to paint all of my prototypes light red before molding from now on, I might as well roll with it.

Since I'm still able to find time now and then to build pep stuff, I should be able to get a few more sizes of armor parts knocked out while I'm here. Then I can mail them home and all I'll have to do is sand, prime, bondo, sand, add details, prime, sand, prime, sand, paint, mold, de-mold, and cast them.

Once that's done all I'll have to do with the space diaper is fit the dongle...

I had that same problem with my pare of ACU's when i did ROTC for a bit but there was nothing like doing drills and having your pants fall off when your formation.

Im amazed you dont get any weird looks from people walking in your office. I would find it strange walking into a CO's office to find mjolnir armor laying on his desk

That's why I don't keep any of this stuff in the office.

Also, I'm nobody's CO here. I'm just a naval officer on loan to the Army for staff duty. The wierdest thing on my desk is my little collection of these guys:

I got a bag of those little green plastic army guys in the mail a while back, so I went ahead and sculpted out an assortment of navy guys to mix in with them, just like me.

The original bag of toy soldiers included 12 unique poses. I stopped sculpting toy sailors once I had molds for 9 unique poses:

They look pretty crappy when they come out of the mold, so I think I did a decent job of copying the aesthetic of the cheap plastic soldiers.

Not necessarily. I'm part of the staff of COMISAF, the general who is running the war here. My particular job has a lot to do with finding information and providing support for the Provincial Reconstruction Teams who are working to rebuild infrastructure and help turn this place into a self-reliant, functional nation for the first time in 30 years. Nobody works for me, but there's a lot of people who work for us.

wow...small.

Statistically speaking, at 5'7" tall and around 165lbs, I'm nearly the exact average height and weight for an American male. I just don't carry much of that weight around my waist.

That said, with the build height of 33.0cm, this thing would still fit someone with an extra four inches of waist. You can see where I cut the belt boxes off and taped the whole thing back together to make it smaller. Also bear in mind that I'm wearing it over pants and a belt and I've got a good-sized folding knife hooked to my right hip pocket. There's still quite a bit of room for someone bigger than me to fit it and I'm going to extend the sides of the front and back so that it can be made bigger still.

Stay tuned.

Start with Google. Do a bit of research. You can find tutorials on sculpting and moldmaking all over the place (including numerous threads in this forum) and there's no reason to go into the details here. Again.

Alrighty! I just took the past three days to read every post of this thread. (I must be crazy) This is some amazing work. I wish I had a workshop or somewhere to really work on some armor. Best I have is working over at my Dad's shop. I hope everything is going well over there and that you keep producing this top notch work.

Thank you for your compliments and I apologize for your confusion. I thought I'd explained what was going on pretty well. I have failed. I am ashamed...

Minor update: this evening (Kabul time) I finished up the pep model for my large-sized torso armor and put the first few coats of resin on it. I'll be posting pics soon, but for now I'm too tired to write up what I've been up to.
