When you perfect your visors, are you going to sell any? The one you have in your helmet is looking great!

i like the way your projects look you have lots of detail but are you gonna make any armours that are more complex? like you projects tho

I'll probably offer a run when I figure out how to keep the chrome from rubbing off of the insides of the visor. I'm actually more likely to offer them as an upgrade for folks who have bought my helmets from previous runs. There's no other way I can be sure they'll fit the buyer's helmet.

I love posts like this. My armor is shaping up to require something like 40 separate molds to make castings in at least three separate materials. Then there will be the undersuit and the weapons. I'm also wiring up light-sensitive LED modules, an FRS radio system, rear-view camera, helmet and torso cooling fans, and a built-in megaphone. Mine will be one of at least ten or eleven suits I'm building to completion. How could I make it more complex and why would I want to?

Thor I'd love to see you write a comprehensive tutorial sometime on some of your molding techniques. I vaguely remember you mentioning some handbook for molding? What kind of plaster are you using for those shell molds? Is that hydrocal?

I'm not using plaster for any of my mother molds. For this project I've used fiberglass or reinforced casting resins for the mother molds.

The book I've referenced is called The Prop Builders Molding and Casting Handbook, by Thurston James. I can't recommend it enough.

UPDATE:

I've been doing some fairing on the bits in progress:

I even went so far as to prime them to see how much work is left. The upper arm armor looks pretty good. A few more minutes and I should be able to mold up the tricep and bicep parts:

I'm pretty happy with the forearms too, but the calf armor has a long way to go:

Stay tuned. More to come.

Apologies if this has been addressed previously:

I'm currently doing some research on cold casting with silver/nickel and have run across two schools of thought regarding how this is done. One method is to mix the powder with the resin at a ratio of 1:1:1 (powder, part a, part B ) The second method is to dust the inside facing edge of the mold with the powder, then fill with resin.

I understand that the first method is also used primarily to add weight to the molded part. Which method do you use/have you used, and which would you recommend for getting the best final result?

Love that chrome paint, too. If you painted your car with it, it must be fairly durable!

The gauntlets need a tiny bit more fairing and all of the small details.

I've done coldcasting using both of the methods you describe. Mixing metal dust into the first layer of resin will mean you'll have to buff the surface to uncover the metal at the surface. Dusting the mold will give you a thin layer on the surface of the casting, but it won't hold up to much abuse. Usually when I cold cast parts I dust the mold AND mix metal powder into the first layer of resin.

I hope this helps.

Thank you all for the compliments once again. I did some more work on my gauntlets since the last update and had a friend snapping pictures all the while so I can explain my scoring technique.

Here I am using a laser line from my jigsaw to make sure I'm making straight lines:

Once that's done, I cut along the lines using a hacksaw:

Using the hacksaw cuts as a guide, I make the cuts wider and deeper using a spare jigsaw blade:

Here's the top of the gauntlets as they look right now:

And here's a comparison shot of the bottom against a reference image from the gallery:

Clearly they need more work, so there's more to come. Stay tuned...

how much will u be selling the suits for cuzz im a poor 15 year old boy and dont want to spend much :(/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> " border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> also, i need a hi-res model for the helmet if im goign to make my own can u send me urs? and how do u size test. im 5'9 and supposedly i will grrow up to be 5'11 so the same suit shud fit me forever.

I'm not selling full suits yet, but when I do they will likely be pretty expensive. I'm planning on selling the raw castings of the helmets for $300 shipped. I don't work for free (especially for strangers). I don't mean to be rude, but I don't mean to be broke either. The helmet alone hase taken quite a few hours to get to this point and the castings will take time too. Add to that some very expensive materials and the potential for legal problems vis-a-vis copyright infringements and I need to take in enough cash to make it worth the trouble.

I get what he is saying, but just to lest everyone know, I offer the helmets casted raw at 150. That is half the price.

If you are interested, PM me and let me know.

Everything about your post is wrong. I don't know you and you don't know my current prices (I high-balled that statement to get a charity case to stop begging me for parts). I'm not sure why you decided to drop in and take a dump in my thread. Mods please delete...

I've removed that post.

Seriously folks, coming in to someone's thread trying to undercut them and poach business from them is wrong on so many levels. DO NOT do it again!

Not much of an update, but the front half of the space diaper is just about ready for molding:

Also shown in this picture are the tricep and bicep parts as well as a detail for the outside of the gauntlets. Work continues on the buttplate and gauntlets. Hopefully I'll be pouring more rubber by this weekend. Then it's time to get back to work on the calves, thighs, and boots. Perhaps there is an end in sight.

Stay tuned.

I've finally got my gauntlets ready for molding. Here's a shot of the tops:

And the bottoms:

I'm not 100% thrilled with the details, but if I keep tinkering with them I'll never get them done.

In other news, I've started the codpiece mold:

I should be starting the molds for the bicep, tricep, buttplate, and belt pieces this afternoon. Stay tuned...

Thanks for sharing that technique.

Very generous of you indeed.

Your armor is turning out beyond steller.

Once again, I post: I will be selling helmets for only 150, and that is half the price of the ones listed here for as good ofquality. I admire this man's work, and I even added him to my friends list, but when I posted helmets for cheaper, he erased my post on here and took me off his list.

So, want a helmet? PM me and we can discuss details. Want a suit, and you can bet that the price is reasonable.
