idk, i dont think it would be very clean looking, it would get places where you dont want resin, and it would be brittle, one drop and your done.

I agree with you Xavier... resin is great in compression, and terrible in tension, once that thing tries to flex, it will crack...

But... who drops their MC helm, why did you even take it off, the MC never shows his face, he is a mystery... plus I heard Chuck Norris signed a non disclosure agreement with the UNSC to not reveal that its simply his bad ass'ness that makes the MC almost super human, and that the suit is not actually mechanically assisted, its just Chuck under there... I mean after all, when chuck does push ups, he pushes the world down, its explains alot about the MC...

(side note, I have allready droped my helm twice, and its not even complete... terrible)

Oh I see now what he meant by pop the balloon, the spray on resin becomes the visor, but spray on resin is very thin and weak, it would break easily compared to a visor for 5-10 dollars more.

Wow breaking is a prob but me being a genius i have solved that. i put cardbord on the insid in small strips laying from left to right on the inside f the visor then sprayed it again from inside. it works perfect now. im trying to get a movie up. we're gunna shoot it with a paintball to test strenght. (While its on my head  ) but my neigboors being mean and keeps yelling at me so it may be yet a while.

inside veiw. ilisstrating cardboard placement.

It might not break, but I know it will warp or bend or shatter.....

Resin I use to paint brush onto armor itself isnt all that strong until I use fiberglass, even then, I still say a paintball gun could do some damage as a small indent.

OMG, please please please wear eye protection under that mask if you ever insist on trying that... why not try it on a static stand, rather than risk hurting yourself... when resin cracks, it can create sharp points, of which could cut into your eye, which could cause you to become blind, if not partially blind... please don't test this while wearing it... this feels like a lawsuit waiting to happen

Just set the thing on the ground with a rock in it to keep it from flying when hit, or hold the helmet in point blank distance from the gun, if you lose an eye, I dont want to here you complain or threaten to sue, even with eye protection on, I WOULDNT DARE shoot myself in the head.

If this cost 24 dollars, why not just spend 18 dollars and buy the gold plastic hjc visor in the pep forums? Someone posted a link and it is the same visor I bought for 38 dollars off ebay, the price is similar, but if you were to shoot yourself with a paintball gun, you wouldnt shatter your hard work. You would just mess it up with paint from the ball.

I get mine for $28 from Sandhill Powersports...

I understand your motivations for wanting to do this, but I won't recognize this as a reasonable method of making a visor until I see a completed, mettalized see though visor made with this technique..

Those are the benchmarks you have to overcome if you expect to make it better than the moto visors.

Im all for seeing how it would stand up to a paintball. But while your wearing it....thats just asking for a head injury and maybe death. Make a cardboard stand or something. Then try shooting at different ranges and speeds and write down your results.

since you all so concered ill tell ya this. in the state of good ol vermont i could not leagaly sue you guys for a self inflicted injury. plus i just shot it on a rock like you said ant it shattered pretty nicely so for the next batch im gunna spray a thin layer of it to have a base shape then melt the side of a soda bottle onto it giving it much needed tencil strength. ill be done in about 1/2 an hour then ill shoot it again.

Vacume forming a 2 liter bottle's plastic might work, say you carve the visor from clay then make a plaster mold, vacume forming would make a nice clear one, just apply tint before vacume forming so the tint will form along with the shape, if it's vinyl tint it will strecth with no problem.

Before you shot it, did you try and look through it ? Id like to know how distorted the feild of vision is from all the complex curves of the visor.

The pic actually came from a post of mine. The paper is newspaper paper mache'd over my son's helmet made in blue cardstock.

I have read about the tint not staying on some plastics because
( a ) they "offgas" -- As I understand, this offgassing is the same cause of trapped bubbles in plastics that are heated too high when vacforming.
( b ) different expansion/contraction rates of the two different materials

BTW @ Durlaburban -- what happened to the iron based paint with the magnetic pigments? My research found that Gila used to make a spray on tint (not metallic) years ago but pulled it from the market because no one liked the uneven results or having to remove a window from a car to prevent overspray.

If anyone is interested in a vacformed visor discussion - see Visor Idea

to the spray tint the stuff the guys at the repair shop is "unmarked". The said they painted over the labels for leagal issues i think? i dont know whats the deal with there spray tint but id give my life for a can of it. ive seen em use it before and its not uneaven at all. and yes i pretty sure its iron based.

Well good luck with your efforts, and all the more power to you.. but again I'm gonna say that this sounds like it's something that most people will forego fo a very simple part that they can order and don't have to worry ab\bout tinting and mettalizing themselves... if that is even possible.

Still waiting to see some proof of process on that one.

Good luck.
