Can epoxy be used as a hardener (not aqua epoxy)

Guys may I just ask if I can use epoxy as an alternative for resin because when I checked the home depot, ace hardware, and true value their answers were the same they said there is no stock in their branch in my location and the only thing I know as alternatives were putty, clay, and bodyfiller and of course I have also tried putty but results were not favorable and the sculpting clay was a bit hard to find and might melt of heat

In my experience with epoxy, it can be used as a hardener (of course, working other projects -- I've yet to set it to work with Pepakura). It's kind of expensive, though, in my experience. I could be doing it wrong for all I know, though.

thanks for the tip I think I'll pep a shoulder piece and test epoxy on it and the reason I asked this was because I saw an epoxy that is waterproof so that even when it rains the pepwork won't be ruined PS: I like the ODST theme like soaked in the rain

I've already tried this. It works fine, but unless you use 15 or 30 minute epoxy you won't like the result. Also you have to go really thin with your coats otherwise it will run and globulate everywhere. Check the link in my signature for more detail. If your local stores don't carry any fiberglass resin, ebay is always a good place to look. From what I understand this is a pretty good deal.

When I built balsa wood meter sail planes, I used epoxy and fiberglass tape to join the wing sections... so it can be used as an alternative to fiberglass, except it is super-expensive in comparison. I agree with scizor112 and try and find a way to order fiberglass if you can't buy it locally.

This. I forgot this as well. It's normally around $10-15 for 8oz. of resin and hardener for epoxy adhesives. I only used it on my helmet and that was barely enough to do the first layer of hardening.

Uhh man too expensive if only I could have a paypal. I think I,ll just wait for the resin to be restocked anyway thanks for the tips

You said you checked all of your local hardware stores but you didn't mention auto parts stores. Advance Auto, Napa, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's all have it. Have you tried those?

There is no such thing as "aqua epoxy". You can use epoxy resin instead of polyester resin, but you can't use all those other "alternatives" you've listed, they won't work.

If you want to go with epoxy, mind he necessary safety precautions (more info: http://www.405th.com/showthread.php/33426-Prop-Making-Safety-Guide) and do NOT buy epoxy adhesive. Get laminating epoxy. Adhesives come in really small packages (=high price), with a rather high viscosity (=hard to impossible to laminate with) and usually have really short curing times (=hard to work with).

The other resins people around here use are waterproof as well.

You can save your breath. These chain stores do not carry these products because the customers are not looking for it. These stores mainly carry household/home improvement items. If you are on 405th, then you have access to internet. Lookup Amazon or use Google.
I bought mine at US Composite. They sell fiberglass too. The price is reasonable. The shipping is not.
