If We Wanted To Improve The 405Th Forums...

What about having an annual build competition to the 405th would bring Honor, Armor, Unity. to the forums

Honor - completing the build

Armor - do i have to explain that one

Unity - community vote an builds community posted

yeah you would see some radical stuff with a pep build an 3 months of build time (build time on average of what i see)

Ok, I'm gonna keep this as concise and organized as possible.

1. Need for better organization

A. 1. Eliminate unneeded forums (E-Zine, E3 '09)

2. Find solution for tutorials (New specific forum, or better organized format) New forum, with a new format I think would be great.

3. Possible search function modification ( Only current relevant topics as results, or more content specific results) I like this, but may not be possible.

2. Newbie problem

A. Possible solutions

1. Post restriction (Time requirement for first post, or number of post per day restriction) Not a fan of this one, due to possibility of shunning people with potential.

2. Thread restriction (Time requirement for first thread, or limit on which forum a thread may be started in) Same goes for this one, potential restricting.

3. Payment for site (Either a monthly fee, or pay-per-post) This is a definite no-no in my book, but I'm listing it for thoroughness.

B. Probable solutions

1. Rank system (By post rank-ups, or moderater approval system) I think this is by far the best, and most ingenius idea of them all. Thorough, effective, and rewarding. +9000 IMO.

3. Communication issues

A. 1. Better the Pepakura Hub (By making the features work as well as on the costuming wiki, this could take off immensely.)

2. Old Content Filter (Eliminating content past a certain date, with option to re-open with mod request) Thumbs up from me.

3. Stricter Enforcement (Polish up your hammer, kill anything that disobeys) Heck. Yes.

In a nutshell, that's my nightly post.

@Peter: I love how nobody noticed or laughed at your posts. I agree wholeheartedly. :lol

VERY nicely done Gunner. But I must say, I highly disagree with the payment requirements as you said. I'm pretty sure the site owners wouldn't do that, but if it does happen - I don't really think a lot of people will even try and sign up.

With that said, I really like this Rank system. A lot of people really seem to like the idea.

delete some of the old threads that are locked

- add a a how to for those who have never been to dragon con (how to sighn up, enter costume contests ect)

- add a thread on how to avoid/ deal with complications one might encounter while wearing armor ( espically using bathroom)

Before I begin I'd like to say that I love the idea of an annual build competition Spartan 051! It'd give us all something to aim towards each year and help to inspire new members towards their first builds. :D

Okay, here’s my thoughts.

I don’t much like the idea of a rating system as it may give an inaccurate impression of people that post infrequently, or perhaps work out to be used as a way for disruptive individuals (also known as a$$#@!*s) to strike back at Mods or other members who try to warn them or set them on the right path. May not work out like that, that's just my thoughts.

I’m perfectly fine with all the current sigs and av’s and their bells and whistles. I think common sense and fellow community members keep them within tolerance levels. At least, I feel so.

I strongly believe that the forums should be locked once again and only opened four or so times a year and for a period no longer than a week, so as to decrease the amount of spur-of-the-moment registrations we’ll receive. If someone really wants to join the 405th they’ll be willing to wait and in the meantime may even be spurred to begin their first project so they have a W.I.P. to post when they do get the opportunity to join. I believe that this will cut down on the amount of drivel that gets posted, and disruptive individuals that post it.

Something that I believe must go hand in hand with this is the tidying up of the stickies. They deserve their own section by now and can be an invaluable source of information to the budding builders who will be waiting for registration to open. But before they get their own section they must be tidied up. People have done tuts about their own methods of making armour/props which is then flooded by responses stating that it’s wrong because it’s done a different way to another member or some other such apparent offence, making it not only a pain in the arse to read through but down right confusing to boot. Either the stickies must be condensed and tidied with disclaimers stating that variations on the methods used are okay (and will not be the cause of the Anti-Christ’s birth and demise of all humanity) or, the 405th needs to put together a new set of tutorials based on the originals but neater, more concise, more official, and locked from comment.

And as a side note on the stickies and the belief that nOObs are either incapable or unwilling to read them- if an individual is not willing to take the time to read through at least some of the plethora of information that’s been gathered here on the making of Halo armour and props, then we shouldn’t want them to be here. We’re all here to help each other build costumes and props from a franchise that we love, not to spoon feed people who aren’t willing to learn for themselves by making some mistakes.

I’d also just like to re-mention that I can’t strongly enough recommend that we lock registration again as a regular thing. And not just until the release of Reach when the gates are left open and we get another flood. Regular thing. Except for three or four times a year.

That pretty much concludes my thoughts on the matter.

Regards- Juliet Joe.

P.S. One other thing, I’m with Peter Cooper- where are we exactly on the hookers and blackjack? :cool

P.P.S. I’ve always wanted to use plethora accurately in a forum post! Lol. :p

And let's not forget the "plethora" of posts (in the Noob Forum primarily) that consist of "pics or it didn't happen", "this is against the rules", "I'm a forum cop", or some combination or variation of the three. I'm under the assumption that I'm the only one who sees the report button these days. Perhaps stressing its importance would help cut down on the redundant spam.

- A "build" Thread. Which shows step by step how to make armor from scratch. people can post topics on how they do special tricks on each steps.

- An official contest where you give everyone a month to come up with CUSTOM armor, like not in the games.

- Some painting sub forum. Like the pepakura and weapons section.

- Maybe some new site colors. You can have an option to keep the classic or stay with the new.

- If you could add a "Build" Section on peoples pages. Just to show off their work.

- This other forum had achievements for people that show up below their picture when they post. Example: 100 friends, 10,000 posts etc.

That ruins the point, the reason this site even exists is because people use their own sense and personal taste to achieve what they want their end product to be. A full step-by-step thread would not only be an enormous read, it'd make everyone's armor a copy-and-paste effort.

I would really like a build contest, though. I don't agree with only custom designs, but having a general build competition would be a great way to rekindle some people's creative sides.

I don't have the time ATM to read all of the posts, as there are over 100, but my idea is to take the orientation video and try to set it up so that when some-one signs up they have to watch the video before they can actually sign up. thats my 2 cents, hope its possible :)

I can answer these two:

1. There's a secret team floating around doing something very similar. They're creating a complete idiot's guide to building Halo armor in a fun but educational format. Updates to be announced on the front page about this project in the future.

2. I tried enabling a very similar system and broke the website for about 2 days last month - you may remember were we down for a couple of days due to it. :\

It's not.

Correction: THEY did their coding wrong. The plugin was incompatible with the most current version of Wordpress.

I think new member should not be able to post a topic on the forums, I think we should only be able to reply to post that are already up. Then maybe after a time period of 2 weeks to 1 month new member then can post topics. I am a new member sort of....I have yet to posted a topic asking a question that can be answered by looking around the forums. I'm new here and I hate seeing them. Maybe the Stickies could be more noticeable by changing the colour of the row, so that the whole row from one end to the other is like red or yellow. that might work

i see where dalton is going with that.. noobs cant post topics but can reply till after 10 or 20 post replys then they upgrade to the member statis. sounds like a great idea. would cut down on the what should i make threads. and the how do i do this threads.. might boost sticky reads aswell.

edit: sorry kensai didnt mean to sound mean their. sorry. so a code flaw... oh phlugin said it would work with that version but didnt... gotcha

That wouldn't solve the "great work" copypastes in every WIP topic, and the same people would still post "I'ma do this" topics after the first 10-20 posts. You can't solve stupidity, you know. Have a harder moderation in the Noob Forum and there would at least be some improvement.

Agreed.

I think we should all somehow aim to lessen the "Great work" posts and have more "Great work, allow me to offer some constructive criticism..." posts. Everybody likes to hear their work is great, but people always want to hear how then can improve it to its best. If you keep getting the "great work" replies, how can you learn you are doing something wrong/not doind the greatest job ever. Most peoples skills improve with pacients, yes, but improvement moves much faster through constructive criticism, and the support of other members. We have the support of other members, but we are lacking in the constructive criticism departmant.
