We've officially started the Mark VI Master Chief Helmet project. We've received the CNC'd foam Mark VI helmet parts. These will be cleaned up into a master and then molded in the end. We are posting here in the noob forum since we cannot post in the Creation Forum.

Although the output is very low detail, it will provide a perfect base for symmetry and proportion.

We've Autocad and water jet cut some aluminum pieces that will be used as detail for the helmet master.

Uh. Yeah. If we were to do the rest of the armor, we would use the 18lbs. sculpting foam (yellow). It's the fastest way to do it.

Here's Day Two.....I haven't had time to get anything done since I've been busy playing Santa....
All I've done is clean up the CNCd part and hard shelled it.

looks great, incase you didnt already know. :p just out of curiosity where did you get the models? did you just use the normal maps to generate a full detail mesh or did you get some poor 3d modeler to do the whole thing?

We got a model....I can't really say anymore than that. Sorry about that. Professional courtesy...

This is how I've scaled the handbacks.....
What do you think? This is just a mock up.

Yes...I am well aware of how hairy my arms are...thank you very much.

Looks very good. How will you be approaching the visor? will you be vacforming or casting a custom one? If so, how will you go about making it gold?

I think I will vacuum form a correct visor and have it coated. I don't mind paying extra for it. I think it will look more finished. The helmet, in my opinion, is THE most important piece to the costume. The visor is where everyone will be looking so I think that it should be as perfect as possible.

I agree totally, the helmet is the thing people look at the most, just wondering how you plan to go about coating it? I'm doing a small vacforming project at the moment, and it needs to be transparent gold coated, I cant work out how I could possibly cover the thing in window tint as the shape is too complex, it contains many etched details and depressed shapes with bevelled edges. do you know of other methods to achieve the same look?

No..no.... I'll sub that out. There are companies all over that do that sort of thing. The material is not cheap so I'd prefer someone who knows that they are doing to do it.

Fair enough, I was looking into making a small metalizing chamber a while back, the thing that threw the spanner in the works was the pump needed to maintain the vacuum was about 9 time more expensive than I thought it would be. Scientific pumps cost heaps (well for home hobbyists anyway) Do you have a rough idea of what getting a run metalized professionally would cost? (obviously this will depend on the size of the run, but Im just meaning a ball park figure)

Wow. I have no real idea. I'm guessing that in a quantity of 10 or so it might run about $100-$200 each? I really don't know. I don't imagine it would be more though.

the schematic is right, but the mockup is seriously off by a bit.

on the mock the side comes out too soon. see what i mean in the pic? if i sound mean or condisending iam sorry. just throwin my 2 cents in, tryin to help out a fellow armor maker.

OH oh....I got it. I see...yeah. I didn't bother to alighn the side pieces since this was just a mock-up. I though you meant something serious....

lol
